: Finally building my wifes 89 xj
SlamBone 12-29-2010, 05:13 AM So far I've ditched all running gear except motor. And I'm now striping the undercoating (sucks!!)
My plan:
plate entire uni frame with 3/16.
Gas tank relocation
Rockers with 2x6 3/16 square tubbing
Exo cage
Sbc 350
Th 400 to 203/205
Dana 70 rear
1979 ford Dana 60
4.10 gears arb in front
Weld up the rear spiders
35" bfgs
8,000 lb winch
Have not decided if I'm going to run 63" chevy springs in rear or flip the stock springs for some stretch. Either way I want to stretch the rear about 5 to 7 inches.
For the front I'm going to do a leaf spring conversion using stock wagooneer front springs.
Pretty much building this thing for the wife to play with, and so it can be the support rig.
rok-jeep 12-29-2010, 05:22 AM 35's with a D70 rear.....you'll be scraping the road markers off with that thing.
SlamBone 12-29-2010, 06:10 AM Believe me I would like to go alot bigger tires but the wife seems to think rigs with bigger than 35s are cheaters. Lol. The 70 is a flat bottom and I'm prob gonna do a little shave job. I'm letting her make some of the decisions on this thing that way it keeps her interested if u know what I mean. And when she's ready to go bigger tires the rear end well be able to handle it. I have a chevy front 60 that I would like to put in but not just because of the 35s.
SlamBone 12-29-2010, 06:12 AM The min she decides to go 37" or bigger I'm throwing in the 60
turbohaulic 01-04-2011, 12:11 AM Do you already have a 60 to go in it? If you do you might as well throw it in for the peace of mine anyway IMO:)
ONEtonXJ 01-04-2011, 11:49 AM i know really... fuck 44's with anything bigger than a 205/75/15..
maybe with a chick driving i guess..
:D for the 70.. 14 bolts can blow me..
SlamBone 01-04-2011, 08:52 PM Do you already have a 60 to go in it? If you do you might as well throw it in for the peace of mine anyway IMO:)
Yes I have a chevy 60 that I was thinking of putting in. I decided to put in the 44 to save the 60 for a future buggy build. But just two days ago I picked up a 79' ford one ton with a high pinion 60. So I did some measuring and relized the motor is offset 3 inches towards pass side so the ford 60?will be perfect!!!

That's why I was not really worried about the 44 too much because it's fir the wife and I know she aint gonna hammer on it. But fuck it the ford 60 is going in! Maybe I'll try and sneak some 37s under it. :)
ONEtonXJ 01-04-2011, 09:04 PM haha good man..
you might wanna step it up to at least 37s though for sure... she'll diff out all kinds of shit with just 35s
xjdoug 01-05-2011, 11:50 AM i know really... fuck 44's with anything bigger than a 205/75/15..
i hope this statement isnt serious......
hadfield4wd 01-05-2011, 12:14 PM i hope this statement isnt serious......
Come on Doug. Only stupid people would run 37's on a D44:eek:
Although I would put the 60 in if he has it.

SlamBone 02-09-2011, 08:45 AM I know the jeds machine doubler is cheaper but I like the ord one alot better. It's shorter and I think it's a much better finished product. But thanks for the heads up I appreciate it.

1stgenxxx 03-23-2011, 09:42 PM Why did you go with the th350 203/205 and not ditch the 4.0?

SlamBone 03-24-2011, 09:44 AM Why did you go with the th350 203/205 and not ditch the 4.0?
:shaking: seems like you could have went SBC for the price of the adapter?
I actualy have a running throttle body sbc I could throw in their. Have you done the conversion? Was the wiring fairly simple? I know advanced adapters makes motor mounts. I was concerned with radiator issues for cooling the bigger motor. And since the 4.0 is already fuel injected I was gonna keep it. But now I'm up in the air. Hey comments and advice are always welcome by me. I'm open to all ideas.
" look up and live "
littlejoe83 03-24-2011, 10:56 AM I'm working on putting a 350 in right now I got the motor mounts for advanced adapters and I took all the wiring for the truck gauges and all so that part is easy but I have not found a radiator yet so I might have to get
One made.. Other than that I just need to make a tanny corssmember and drive lines
Good Luck and I will be posting as I go
1stgenxxx 03-24-2011, 07:51 PM I'd go with the sbc to help with power. You added a lot of weight with the tranny and dual case combo.
I went heavy and all out with my last build....This time I'm trying to keep the weight down and use the KISS method....
The build is looking good. If you allready have the adapter for the th350 then roll with 4.0 so you don't have to rewire and all that mess. I did the small block/th350/205 swap in my toyota and I had reoccuring cooling issues.
SlamBone 03-25-2011, 08:55 AM I don't have the adapter yet but I have a gift certificate I won from the cantina for the con raffle for $300 to advanced adapters and that about covers it. The rig is for my wife too....... So probably gonna stick with 4.0 for the simplicity. It runs strong and it's injected so fuck it I guess :)

I welded in a piece of 2x4 3/16 tubing between the rear frame rails that I plated and plug welded it to the stock rear crossmember. 586530
Then I cut my hole for the gas tank.
586531
Then I welded some 1/8 angle to the sides to stiffen up the floor boards and give the tank a nice tight fit. 586532
586534
I am choosing to run the gas tank 180 degree out so I have more diff clearance. 586535

I'm also gonna put my th 400 in instead of the th 350. Then chevy 203 to my ford 205. I was kinda hopping that AA would say that the motor would end up centered so I could use my chevy 60 because I have future plans to do a yj back half and would love to have that high pinion 60 in it. What axles you gonna run?
" look up and live "
SlamBone 04-21-2011, 12:01 AM But I think I'm gonna get that bare block from my friend and really see where the motor is gonna sit before I make a final final decision. I have to use it for mock up anyway. I have a chevy 32 spline 205 also so I can go either way.
" look up and live "
littlejoe83 04-21-2011, 09:40 AM I'm going to run 60s front and rear, I saw a good chevy 205 at pick n pull I might get it today
CrawlerReady 04-21-2011, 09:50 AM Why a rear 60? You gonna 35-spline it or just keep it D44 strength?
SlamBone 04-21-2011, 10:36 AM I'm going to run 60s front and rear, I saw a good chevy 205 at pick n pull I might get it today
Ya bro I agree with crawler re a stock full float rear 60 is no stronger than a dana 44 except for the ring gear. Why not go for a 14 bolt or Dana 70 and do a shave job? Unless u plan on machining out the 60 spindles for 35 spline shafts but that weakens the spindles a bit. But then again your gonna be running 36s u be probably ok with a 30 spline 60 but watch out for the old 16 spline
" look up and live "
SlamBone 04-22-2011, 08:30 AM Well I can't decide how I want to do my rear bumbper! Any ideas?? I would like to hang the shackle off of it.

I think a 4x4 tube looks and fits nice as a rear bumber.. U can even cut the rear finders off right at the body line and have the bumper wrap around the sides and mount on the sides of the frame as well for added strength
moparmaniaccuda 04-22-2011, 11:45 AM Build looks good. Should be a sweet rig when finished!

D60-1SU bitch :flipoff2:
Full float versions in E350s
- D60 center section (std LP60 internals)
- 3.5" tubes
- "big bore" spindles (stock came with 32-spline shafts, 35-spline shafts fit no problem)
- factory dual piston calipers on '99+
- flange adapter instead of yoke (I consider this an upgrade)
Semi-float versions in E250 came with c-clipped 35-spline shafts from the factory. ARB makes a locker for it.
I just set my fullfloat one up the other weekend with a 35-spline ARB and 5.38s without a problem.
Oh, and boring out a std D60 spindle just makes it exactly like a D70 spindle. Go read BillaVistas tech on D70s. He takes measurements.
Good luck with the build! :grinpimp:

offroadmeg 05-23-2011, 01:15 PM Believe me I would like to go alot bigger tires but the wife seems to think rigs with bigger than 35s are cheaters.

I'm "letting" you build me a rock crawler so that we can bring our kids and dog and camping gear more easily. And so we can go by our selves if the homies are busy! And don't make me pull your funds. That sounds good but I'm concerned that my set up may be a little different since your running a different steering box and I'm gonna try and use the stock one.
SlamBone 06-02-2011, 08:16 PM Well I completely finished the rear frame plating tonight. :)600512600513
All i have left to plate is the bottom of both front horns600514
I was curious so I counted .... So far I'm up to 142 fucking holesaws just on the frame! I'm so damn glad I'm almost done with this part.
SlamBone 06-04-2011, 05:26 PM Well I needed a break from frame plating so decided to start my rear bumper. It is 2x4 1/4 wall and I'm gonna stand it off the the frame with 3 2x4 kickers welded to the rear crossmember so it will stick out just past the rear hatch. I well be useing 63" chevy springs and 600775600776600777600778600779hanging my shackles off the rear of my bumper.

If I could I would run shackle in back like my cj but the geometry would suck with the Xj frame. Im hopeing to be around 35 -40 deg on the shackles once I get the engine and all the weight in it.

AgitatedPancake 02-28-2012, 12:24 AM Honestly my front 609 is 3-4" wider than my rear 65.5" wide 9", I haven't noticed any sort of adverse handling characteristics, and I've put it through all sorts of situations. Granted, it doesn't look the best and I also plan on adding wheel spacers to the rear to correct it. I want to do 1"-1.25" wheel spacers to keep the rear slightly narrower than the front like factory.
The builds lookin pretty damn slick man, can't wait to see more!

Ya I think it would look bad but most of all I'm used to driving with same width axles like my cj. I feel it's easier to keep your line. Rough country sells a 2" set for $110 so I'm only gonna be 1/16 wider on each Side up front.

Nice! The ORD kit is the top of the line. It goes together fairly easy, one of the big snap rings is a bitch.. I used big hose clamp and a big socket to drive the ring. Also u used assembly lube to get the needle bearings in and stay right before u drop it in.. Do u already have a 203? And what tranny are u running. Let me know if u need a hand with it and once it's all put together it's a back braker

Ya it's a work of art! I have a turbo 400/203 that I'm using. I'm gonna do a reverse Manuel valve body on the 400. Assembly lube is a good idea I used it when I did my 4:0 gear set in my 300 in the cj7.

That's nice that u have a 400/203. Could not find a 203 that would bolt onto a 400 and/or nv 4500 so I had to reface mine and get a 32 splin input. I really want to get back on my rig hardcore but I have to wait to see how the IRS is going to fuck me over this year haha

As for track width, when it comes to holding lines I actually almost enjoy the narrower rear, as I'm weaving through obstacles the narrower rear seems to follow the track of the front better. Still not enough to stop me from buying wheel spacers to even it out though :smokin:
SlamBone 03-04-2012, 08:30 AM I think were heading to prarie city for some beer drinking and wheeling next Sunday 3/11 if anybody wants to join be their at 1200
SlamBone 03-09-2012, 09:52 PM I got my wheel spacers today and mounted them up.
658409
658410
SlamBone 03-09-2012, 09:56 PM Well I stared at it long enough and said "fuck it" and pulled the trigger!
Not gonna run any inner fenders.

SlamBone 03-16-2012, 10:10 PM Well she is now a roller, and I'm happy with the way it is looking in the rear. The front I'm going to flop the springs to gain 2" wheel base to get the tire away from inside fender. I may have to do someone trimming up front though. While I'm at it I'm gonna remove one leaf from the pack and drill the leafs out for bigger center pins. As soon as I adress the front I'll post pics.
xj9140 03-16-2012, 10:53 PM You planning to move the steering box? Something I neglected to consider when I was building mine.
SlamBone 03-17-2012, 02:58 AM You planning to move the steering box? Something I neglected to consider when I was building mine.
It looks like i won't have too. As soon as I flop the springs I'll know for sure.
I was planning on running just assist but if I run into problems like that I'll just go full hydro.
SlamBone 03-18-2012, 04:44 PM Here are some pics of her sitting on 39.5 iroks

660317
660319
660320
660321
SlamBone 03-18-2012, 04:50 PM So all those pics are with the springs floped for two more inch of wheel base and rocker clearance. I still am not sure if I have to move it one more inch or not. What do u guys think?
This is turned full lock
660323
660324
This pic is tire straight
660325
I just hope I clear at full stuff.
SlamBone 03-18-2012, 04:59 PM I did a couple mods to my front rs44044s I redrilled the center pins to 7/16 and removed one leaf and added an Xj main leaf to make a mill wrap at the fixed end.
Here's a couple pics of how I did it.
First I cut 1/4 in out of inside of big eye. Then cut small eye off, cut the half wrap off of rs springs and put together.
660327
660328
660329
Here is a pic of finished leaf packs.
660331
And this is what the mill Xj mill wrap loos like under the rig.
660330
SlamBone 03-20-2012, 08:47 PM I decided I wanted a little more wiggle room up front so I decided to redrill my perches. What a pain in the ass the cast side was.
I started of with a fucked cast.
660827
After repairing it it looked like this
660829
It took me at least 3 hrs and a 3 destroyed masonry bits to get this.
660830
So all in all I pushed my axle forward another 1 1/4 " and now my drag link is perfectly in line with my high steer arm.
660831
660832
SlamBone 03-20-2012, 08:53 PM Went with my cuz to Ruffstuff yesterday and got some more parts!

660837
SlamBone 03-21-2012, 07:36 PM Didn't get much done on Xj today,

669098
SlamBone 04-30-2012, 08:43 PM Unbolted the 203 from my th400 and took it to the tranny shop for a fresh rebuild
669293
Then I cleaned up the 203 and tore it down and completed the 203 side of the doubler. All I got to do is get a freeze plug for the 205 and bolt the two together.
669294
SlamBone 05-02-2012, 07:03 PM Finished building the doubler!
Freeze plug and a a real short 1/4 20 bolt worked perfect.

I think it was a .90 , sanded it down a bit to fit since the hole is .866. Worked perfect. I got it at napa.
Thank you.
SlamBone 05-06-2012, 08:35 AM Working on my boat sides and I have to make 8 identical tubes so I did this.

After u make the first one just copy it and it goes fast and easy.
xj9140 05-06-2012, 12:45 PM That's a really useful trick and if you cut a long slit the full length the tube, roll it inside out, and tape it back together you'll have a mirror image.

Nice, so a 7/8" (.875) freeze plug SHOULD work mint.
Dorman 565-014 is the part number for a set of 10 brass plugs. I'll report back to ya.
