: Cut N Rotate
texican 11-10-2002, 02:44 PM What is the most in degrees anyone has turn a LC front axle?
I got all my stuff set up and started on the one for the too tall 60 today, and the pinion is is going up 26 degrees!!!!!!!
Butch
dog walker 11-10-2002, 03:28 PM I've turned several up to 22 degrees, but beware that you will have issues with your long u-bolt on the housing. You'll have to get creative. Normally I turn them 12-16 degrees to avoid that u-bolt problem.
texican 11-10-2002, 03:47 PM Done noticed this, thinking about using sleeves with regular grade 8 bolts.
Got no choice as to how much to rotate it.................MOFO is too tall.
Butch
wngrog 11-10-2002, 05:35 PM I knew you should have passed on this one :flipoff2:
texican 11-10-2002, 06:05 PM I got no problems, basic cut measure and weld, just a hell of lot of rotation.....What's the big deal about this job over any others????
Butch
Dave67cruiser 11-10-2002, 06:07 PM Cut and turned 24 degrees, the ubolt on the short side near the pumpkin was a bitch. But with some creative bending I was able to make it work.
ROCK HUGGER 11-10-2002, 07:28 PM I dont know what my pinion angle is but my ubolt was a PITA
till I did some creative bending, it is fine now.
RHINO 11-10-2002, 07:37 PM hey butch is there a particular need to make the pinion point right at the case? instead of just turning it up enough to relieve the bind.
dog walker 11-10-2002, 07:37 PM Here's one I did that was rotated about 22 degrees. I like the sleeve idea with bolts, but on this one I grinded the housing a bit, then built a new u-bolt plate that was drilled slightly off centered.
RHINO 11-10-2002, 07:44 PM i wish these pics were from the other side, is the sleeve idea one where you cut a piece out of the housing then weld in a tube? if so i have looked into this and it seems the housing strenth would be retained.

The owner and I discussed it and decided if we were going to do it, we may as well do it right.
You did see pix of the truck?

I'll wind up doing the sleeve deal, and I'll post pix.
You basically take 2 sleeves, and weld them onto the sides of the housing, gusset if you think it needs it.
Not my idea, Brad Musil, Phoenix, has them at all 4 corners of his SO'd 40.

trd55 11-10-2002, 09:38 PM Hey Butch, You might try using a ubolt eliminiation plate like All Pro sells.
http://www.allprooffroad.com/pics/7432.jpg
I fabed my own after trying and not liking the bending of ubolts (possibly weakening them). Looked pretty bootie fab.
Don't forget you can also use the ends of a minitruck with more angularity to overcome the binding issue of a stock shaft. I heard the second section of an extended cab Tacoma has the best joint to use.(more angularity than all others, and might be the right length already)
Good luck

cruiseroutfit 11-11-2002, 01:55 PM Seems like the biggest problem with rotating the pinion up to 26 degrees will be the oiling in the differential, possibly burning the outer pinion bearing due to lack of lubrication. Not sure it LC 3rd members will have a problem with this but it can be solved by using an additive such as Lucas. Tera requires that you use an additive in their tera60 housing due to an oiling problem. Not sure but worth looking into...

The point is to minimize vibration.
If you are running a CV joint out of the T'case, the driveshaft should be straight in line with the 3rd member pinion.
If you are running a straight U joint at the T'case, then the Tcase flange and the 3rd member pinion flange should be parallel.
Angle mismatch and drive shaft vibration won't normally be a big deal unless you run at more than 25 MPH with the hubs locked.
MD11Fr8Dog 11-13-2002, 06:38 AM Dang, Kurt!! I clicked on your Homepage link and my screen EXPLODED with a half dozen pop up screens/ads!! Yikes!!
Oh, and welcome 2 year newbie!!:flipoff2:
cruiseroutfit 11-14-2002, 01:14 PM Yeah, I need to fix that... I'm working on a new one for the company...
Oh yeah, it feels good to be a 2 year rook!!!
How is your locker project going? Still need to see some picts of the truck when you get it finished....
RHINO 11-14-2002, 03:19 PM The point is to minimize vibration.
i know all about it pinhead, but thanks. i was mearly thinking of it being a front shaft, with non full time use at lower speeds. but it is better to do it right than twice.

I will FINALLY have my garage back for the first time since 7/01 on 11/21! I hope to have my nice shiny newly painted with SOA conversion in the garage with my nicely new painted tub to receive my nicely painted rebuilt 2F, SM420 and 3sp tcase wrapped around my ToyBox - during the week prior to Turkey Day. Pix will follow soon after!!
green grass hopper 11-15-2002, 07:46 AM Hey Butch are you going to be home this weekend(11-16-02)? i'am going to be up there getting my axle from Harold and was going to see if you would like to do lunch?

Hey Sean, whatever happened to that 55 your picked up? Are you DDing it?
That is a hell of a lot, how much caster did you go with?
Are you worried about oil getting to the pinion?
texican 11-15-2002, 10:55 AM Edwin I will be at the shop, swing by or call me.............
We are setting the caster @ 4.5-5 degrees.
Oil, we are raising the filler, and runnin' Lucas, really not my concern, the owner knows the risks.......

Nope, it needs some brake work. The PO did a brake job with a complete CCOT kit (cylinders, master cylinder, etc.) and they got a bad MC. I need to fix that and then I'll probably put it up for sale - marital bliss is more important than Cruiser bliss :( Anyway, it'll eventually pave the way for us to get a 3/4 ton turbo diesel quad cab tow rig!! Marital politics is great!!:D
How is the snow so far in Park City?? Did you get the whole house/apt?? We're still planning on a UT ski trip this season! We've had a ton at the boat and I can't wait to get home to make tracks!! We're opening early this year, the day after I get home!! Folks have already been hiking up and poaching runs already - and I'd be doing the same if I wasn't on the road right now!!
Sean
BTW - rolled through your hometown last weekend!!

Nice work, I hope the TD works out for oyu... I can't remember what year it was but hopefully it's got the disk brakes. Otherwise you might be in for a ride with those drums if you (and your PO) don't pay close attention to adjustment....:D

Hey Sean I'll shoot you an email backchannel. PCMR opened today, Alta's doing great and in the high elevations we're great. But temps down lower have been a little warm. So, early season to be expected. But it's earlier than it was last year, and we had over 600! :flipoff2:

dieselcruiserhead 11-18-2002, 04:44 PM Hey Matt,
Sorry it took me so long to post back here...
When I was a kid (and a snowboarder :rainbow::flipoff2:) I used to ride at SFSB back in the day, if you ever see a guy riding a neon yellow and black Kemper with a cant plate and lots of holes in the top sheet (before snowboards were pre drilled) punch him because that is my board and someone stole it there!
Anyways, things are shaping up up here, you're still welcome even if you're on those :rainbow: ass Vokyls :flipoff2: -- Just kidding those boards rip.
Andre aka 3 pinner :puke:
FIXXXXAH 11-18-2002, 05:47 PM YOU WERE A SNOWBOARDER DUDE? OUCH, I'M SORRY. HOPE I NEVER THREW ANYTHING AT YOU! :P
THE SAD THING IS SANTA FE IS REALLY A SKI AREA IN DECLINE. HIGH TICKET PRICES AND POORLY MAINTANED STUCTURES [THE POMA TO THE TOP OF THE MOUNTAIN IS GONE] WERE YOU AROUND FOR THE SEASONS THEY HAD THE PARK SETUP OFF THE TRIPLE? ALL THATS GONE....
I MAY GO UP TO SLC TO VISIT A FREIND AND HIT PARK CITY IN MARCH...

Coolest ski toy of the year this year is my helmet-cam!!:smokin: :smokin:
