: those of you blowing up 5.29 gears
Chewbacca 11-11-2002, 09:18 AM I was wondering if it is usually the front gearset that you're blowing up...seems like it...
Anyway I thought maybe if it were front the reason may be that the gears aren't properly broken in...unless while break in you drove around with the hubs locked in???
The ideal solution would be to break in the front gearset with the 3rd member installed in the rear, run it that way for a while to work harden the gearset and than swap it to the front...
Just a thought, and curious if this is being done or overlooked??
Booger and Cliff you both in the past week have blown out some 5.29 I think?
Just remember - when you put a diff in the front, you are actually using the "coast" side of the pattern to drive the vehicle, instead of the "drive" side - which makes the setup weaker by nature.
JamisonWorkshop 11-11-2002, 10:48 AM Thats where I would wonder if one should set a front gearset up with the coast side in mind instead of the drive side. Coast is supposed to be on if the drive side is, but wouldn't some tweaking for the coast side pattern be in order if running in the front.
rEdNEcKwHeE1eR 11-11-2002, 12:00 PM this might be a dumb question but, what would happen if you turned the front third upside down to make it a high pinion?
Would the front tires turn back wards????

no workie, the hipinion is a totally different third member and guts.....
Booger Weldz 11-11-2002, 12:07 PM im gonna try and narrow a 60 down to ~66" and throw a couple spacers on my v6 rear to make it ~61". see how long this lasts(rear)....
i wouldnt sweat the 5.29 thing. ian and i have broken nothing until the super birfs and 38.5 inch tires.......mine was bouncing on a granite face trying to keep up with dustin in a landcruiser with 42's and dd60/14bolt.....
Chewbacca---I've been noticing that a ton of 5.29 gear sets are busting up...and many of them seem to be Genuine Gear and most are set up by "someone else"......I don't think you'd have a problem with the 5.29s if a solid collar was used on the pinion side and the carrier bearings were cranked down really tight like they need to be but usually aren't. It's my opinion that most shops just don't give a damn and don't set it up and tighten it up properly. Look at the simple carrier bearing tool at the end of this link that I whipped up in 10 minutes for this 5.29 install. I might put about 50 foot-pounds of tightness on my bearing set-ups.....
http://dreamwater.com/zuk/sterling_gears_rear.html ....of course, if ya start running 38's and 39's and 40's like some of the Arizona puppies then all bets are off.
Chewbacca 11-11-2002, 01:47 PM DRM- thanks for stating the obvious :)
Booger - I was doing the same thing this past weekend, mad bouncing up a granite slope at Last Chance Canyon...no breakage :)
Zuk - 38s or 40s are my next tire size :)
I think that when I run 38s or 40s I'm going to be trailering it so having 5.29 in the pumpkins won't really be necessary...I thought it an intersting observation that it was FRONT DIFFS that are blowing up, which is most likely because they aren't broken in and work hardened like the rears (lockout hubs)
So my question still stands? How did you guys break in your front gearsets, if at all??????????
Chew---now that you mention it, none of the ring and pinion sellers makes a mention of the front break-ins.....I just run them myself. Since all my wheelin out here is desert and boulders, my ring gears never get hot..... all my wheelin is between 1 and 20 mph or so. I use the good synthetic in the back and use the cheapest crap I can find in the front....no heat. Speeds are too slow down here. I don't think the gears "work harden" like you think....I think it's just a matter of wearing the high spots offunder controlled loads and getting a nice mirror shine. I don't think the temper changes at all on a properly broke in set.
pmurf1 11-11-2002, 03:52 PM I don't break in my gears at all. I've broken two sets of Genuines, Kongs set me up two sets of Yukons. I got over a year and a half out of the Genuines, so that isn't too bad IMO on 38's, silly low and heavy as hell. Hopping on them is what broke mine too. You tend to get a little silly and cocky with the super birfs. It's a pay to play sport, just set up a spare and use it when you break a set. No big deal.
Wilson 11-11-2002, 08:30 PM I toasted 2 rear 5.29 sets last year, I think as a result of a spool, lots of pavement time with 37's @15psi and a heavy foot. Both were set up by "someone else" and were broke in according to directions from the manufacturer.
I also just toasted my 5.38 front gearset, but I snagged them out of an old cj5 rear end last year, so 50 years of service is more than I ever expected to get from them.
bobaki 11-11-2002, 08:49 PM DRM sooooooooooooo with a high pinion its all back to right and higher?............:D
Booger Weldz 11-11-2002, 08:58 PM how the fawk would he know, he hasnt even broken a birfield yet:flipoff2: :D :D
J Kimmel 11-11-2002, 09:08 PM Are most of you breaking 5.29's using V6 or 4cyl diffs?

Fawkin Newbie, IT WILL NOT WORK!!!!!! even with 50 oil slingers :flipoff2:
rEdNEcKwHeE1eR 11-11-2002, 09:31 PM Are you on the rag or some thing. I know it wont work but I was asking why
ROCK HUGGER 11-11-2002, 09:42 PM you ever seen the search button:confused:
For the real answer.
The pinion is on the wrong side of the ring.
front axle turning backwards, rear axle turning forward.
Hoffa 11-12-2002, 04:17 AM When i got my front 5.29's i dropped the rear d/s and broke the front in just like i did my rear and i have yet to have any problems, but then again i'm not quite as hard on my stuff as the likes of you guys.
Wilson 11-12-2002, 04:49 PM Mine were V6, with a V6

The wheels will turn in opposite directions (front and rear)
It will not fit (3rd memeber) back into the housing
-slots for the spanners
-ring gear impression in front of housing will now be on wrong side
e cliff 11-13-2002, 12:59 AM i broke mine tapping the brakes a lttle and backing up with no rear drive line. the gears were set up wrong and i also blew up the rear v6 ring and pinion but that was caused by( i think) the turbo and the over heating of the gears?????? i am not sure. i still would run the 5.29's with the v8 but i would be careful of the way i drive.
rEdNEcKwHeE1eR, you can ack like a stupid kid on the marlin bb but hear you will get flammed or banned if you act like a punk. so don't push you luck.
