im looking at a set of u1200 axles to replace the 404s i have on my 96 dodge ram project. im not too far into the project to swap axles. are the u1200 axles a lot stronger? i want to build my cummins for around 500hp and im worried about the 404s with the weight of the truck.i currently have 44"boggers and full hydro steering. i could sell my 404 s for what i can get the u1200s for. thanks for any input
I believe the U1200's are bascially a 406/416 axle with slightly larger portal boxes. I think they have a very good shot @ holding up although a cummins @ 500 HP is probably upwards of 800-1000 ft/lbs of torque, No??? (can almsot guarantee the 404's wil not hold up to that, especially in a fullsize).
The only concern I can see is that I'm having a hard time getting brake calipers to fit with my 406 boxes and 17's (with some decent backspacing), so I hope you plan on running 20's
