: Worn bearings in 404 Portal Box

Has anyone had worn upper outer bearings in the 404 portal box?

I am running mog 9s and had the rear portal boxes off recently. There is end play and side to side play on the axleshaft on both sides. The last time I had them apart there was play in the drivers side box. I pulled it apart and the outer upper bearing was worn. I replaced it and reassembled it. When reassembled there was alot of preload on the bearings, you could turn it by hand, but there was alot of resistance.

It has never been low on oil or had an oil leak. I run synthetic 75/90 in it.

I am wondering if there was too much preload. I do not run gaskets between the case halves and am wondering if I should pull a shim or two from behind the race on the upper outer bearing to make up for not running a gasket and reduce this preload with a fresh set of bearings.

What have others run into with this? How much preload is there on the bearings with a gasket between the case halves?

I haven't gotten that far in my own Mog-9 build, but I asked a similar question in my thread. (Check near post #85).

The correct setup of that upper bearing sounds like a total pain to do correctly, so I'm not looking forward to it when the time comes.

The paper gasket thickness should be: .012" so if you leave it out, you'll need to compensate with the shims.

I will remove around 0.012 inches of shim. There was quite a stack of thin ones in there if I remember correctly. I will then assemble the case halves with just the axle and check the preload by hand.

Does anyone have the part number for the outer bearing handy? I think I will replace the inner one as well if it isn't to hard to get.

Thanks for the help

Hi Guys,

We recently updated the portal section of the site with most everything for the portal parts with pics and prices.

http://www.expedition-imports.com/category/unimog_404_parts.chassis.front_axle.front_hub_redu ction/?s=30&size=60

In addition, specific to the bearings, if you click on the specific bearing on the store in the description you should find the standard bearing number to help you source locally. For example: look at the diagram and see that your bearing is in diagram number 231, click on the corresponding part for number 231 and you will find the MB part number, but you will also find the general bearing number in the description....in this case you would need a 6215.

We have also added in ALL of the CV rebuild parts individually as well as in kit form.

Is there a reason you guys are going without gaskets? Originals are $7.50 and reproductions are $5, I can't imagine it is a price issue?

Hope this helps.

Cheers,

Scott
