: Fire Dept H1 help
nlfd8702 01-14-2011, 05:09 AM We have been given a 95 4door H1 with a fire body.
We need tires and maybe wheel.
It has 8lug 2peice wheels.
Any advice for off road tires?
How abour a different wheel set up?
Thanks
mojo74 01-14-2011, 07:28 AM Where are you going with the hummer? just rocks? mud, gravel fire roads?
answer those questions, and the wheel choice gets easier.
and i have no experience on the two piece wheels.
I would contact 100dollarman on this site for wheels and tires.
What condition is it is, does it need a restoration? Can you post some photos?

You need to stop worrying about wheels and go buy some lotto tickets, lucky plucker:eek::eek:
lodikrawlingkiller 01-14-2011, 10:46 AM Having been in the machanized side of the infantry for a while I have alot of experience with the H1 style beadlocks. contact 100dollarman and he'll hook you up with tire/wheels for a song. but do try and get the newest tires possible and watch out if you do ever have to drive on the run flat because the tires will catch fire after about 20-30 miles at 25mph:flipoff2:
over all the tire choise is fairly limited for what you need. Being gov, you can buy the non-public reslease tire like the new mtr and bfg hmmwv tires
nlfd8702 01-14-2011, 12:30 PM General fire use 50-50 on off road
open feilds
some trails
emergency use only
I would post pic's just do not how.
Thanks

BigKofJustice 01-19-2011, 05:52 PM As other's have said, you can get a new surplus set of 12 bolt or 24 bolt 2 piece steel HMMWV rims with new tires for around $1200-2200 if you hang out on the military surplus forums.
Or shop around for a used set of wheels and rubber for around few hundred dollars.
One thing to keep in mind with the hummer/hmmwv 2 piece steel wheels is the labor on swapping tires. It's about 2 hours per wheel dealing with the donut and putting a new tube of runflat lube in, and bolting everything back up together. Most tire shops will run away from an H1 with the 2 piece wheels.
The dealer charges around $800 for labor on a tire switchout usually. (At least an decent one, I've seen some places try to charge more)
On that note, some owners just hunt for another set of steel wheels with tires already installed.
Or you can get aftermarket OEM approved wheels, and you get the bonus of going to any tire shop and having tires swapped out. Plus with 17" wheel size you have a much wider array of tire choice.
Cepek's rims meet AM general guidelines for hummer/h1 use and have a higher weight rating than the OEM wheels:
http://www.hummerproducts.com/17%20Wheels.htm
The downside of course is you lose the beadlock/runflat capability.
badmatt 01-22-2011, 12:15 AM used set of 24 bolt wheels on ebay right now for $600
Chrawler 01-25-2011, 01:01 PM Unless you will be doing the work yourself I would swap rims to some Cepeks. Although there are aftermarket rims will fit the HMMWV bolt pattern, they may not have the load rating or backspacing that is recommended. All of Cepek's rims are at or above all of the recommended settings.
No shop in Washington would touch my two piece rims, even the Hummer dealerships didnt have the correct socket I needed since the Civilian Hummers came with a penta bolt on the rims to hold the two pieces together.
As for tires, the stock HMMWV tires are great unless driving in snow. Keep in mind that the size of the tire you run will have an effect on the runflat use due to the increase or decrease in sidewall length.

Anyone know where we could get a socket for the thing?
How about replacement nuts any idea what size they are?

Not in a sarcastic way at all, But. I tried to warn you. See below, or my post above.

Trailworthy uses military wheels that use a standard nut. I tried calling when I did my wheels. He helped me out in getting PVC beadlock inserts though. Very good business. Even if you dont get his beadlocks, order up a new set of O-rings that go between the two halves of the rim. You will want to replace this.
You should also replace your O-ring and jam nut from your air valve (D-spade.) You can get these from Tom Cepek (google gt hummer products.)
The Penta Socket you need will be very hard to find locally. It is only something AM General had their authorized dealers have so control who woud take the rims apart due to safety issues. Most likely you wont be able to find one, but you can buy a Penta socket from BlueHummer.com you will have to call and talk to Dave though, i'm not sure if its a part on his website. Last I checked it was like $150 or something. Not really worth it if you are going to replace the nuts. He does sometimes rent the tool out, but it may be backordered for a bit. Another solution is to get a socket around the same size red hot and hammer it on the nuts then try to take the socket off the nut. That is as long as you plan to replace them with standard nuts. I highly suggest you dont do this method though, seeing as you have the 12 bolt rims you would end up going through about 5 or 6 sockets for your set of 4 wheels. Not to mention if your nuts are anything like most of the H1's then you have a lot of work ahead of you getting them off.
You can replace the nuts with Locking Flange Nuts. I beleive mine were 1/2" - 20. You can take one of the ones you took off to a shop by you. Make sure you get locking nuts though. You dont want those two halves separating. I went to Tacoma Screw for mine.
Davethorik 02-06-2011, 09:55 AM Any up to date photo's,from the owner,7 years old ,want to see what shape she is in today.was a FireFighter in the big city ,25 years, and never seen a hummer or hummvee fire rig.she is sweet like to have 1 of them. >Thanks for the pictures< from 04

5.9 ANDY 02-08-2011, 09:00 AM We have been given a 95 4door H1 with a fire body.
wait, you were GIVEN one? details?
nlfd8702 02-08-2011, 07:46 PM Missouri Department of Conservation through the federal FFP(Firefighter Program)
Supports and povides equipment and vehicles to Missouri Fire Departments.
Most other states support these programs for fire departments, kind of like how the Law enforcment get DoD equipment.
Fire departments before 9/11 were at the lower end of the chain, after 9/11 the need to equip fire departments with better equipment surfaced and here we are.
We will get a title to this unit in four years because it was a civilian model.
AMG HMMWV's when given out will need to be returned for demil after there usefull ness to a departmnt ends. (Crap ideal) reason we have been given is HMMWV's are for off road use only, bull.
We have recvd tires from TRAILWORTHY and they look great.
Agian looking for the wheel locknuts to get them mounted.
We used it during the big snow and it preformed better than excpected.
Still need to do some work on the fire body for firefighting.
But works great for sear and rescue.
