i`m looking to put the most powerful engine I can in a Mog 404, like the rear mounted v8 one, but what could I get under the bonnet? Ok Ok I know you call it the hood:flipoff2:

The 2.8L (?) M130 gas engine from the pintail Mercedes (mid '60s) will bolt in, and is stock in the civie version of the 'mog. I've read that the gas mileage still sucks, but more power. Most go with the dieselization program. Buy the parts required, and a OM617 Mercedes (300D) passenger car 5 cylinder diesel will bolt in. I've seen pics of a small V8 up front, but took some body mods to get it done. Someone has mentioned putting in a Ford 300, but it is quite long compared to the stock engine. I'm planning putting in a 4bd1t, which come stock in a late '80s GMC 4000. My research indicates that the tranny does like too much rpm, but torque is OK - within reason.

What to transplant depends on your time, resources, money, and talent.

One more thought...
If you want to maximize, you should reseach a Cummins 4bta. With a few mods to the engine, the dyno sheets are showing 250hp and over 400# torque!

thanks, I have seen one with a 2.5 petrol engine, 140 horses, goes well, would like the V8 but space is limited in the cab as is!

I have done a v8 conversion with a fuel injected ford 302 into my 404. Its alot of fabricating to make it work and look right. Some day when time permits I will do a build thread listing all the issues and parts I had to deal with, got close to 1000pics of the build.

In my opionion it was well worth it. The current motor is a stroker 347 pushing about 375hp. The mercedes drivetrain is holding up great, got about 2500miles since the converson with 80% of those being wheelin. The only real issue I have had with the unimog drivetrain has been the transmision heat tends to climb at highway speeds. Working on a solution for that now. You do sacrifice some interior space. I went to overhung pedals with a custom heaterbox and a little hammering of the driver side inner wheel well for more room. Btw I also streched the cab into a doka style.

The v8 power is amazing, I can cruise down the highway at 60mph not needing to down shift for hills. But at those speeds I am turning 3650rpm with 42" iroks. Which has me looking for ways to put some sort of overdrive like the advance adaptors Ranger unit between the clutch and trans. Offroad the power and rpm allow me the ability to have serioius wheel spin and allow me to stay in the same gear alot more on climbs.

Let me stress this conversion is not for the novice fabricator or hack.

I am working on a ford 300 straight six swap. I am currently making manifolds so I can fuel inject and turbo it. There is no kit to do this much like the v8 conversion you will have to know what you are doing but it is a closer fit in form factor to the mb 6.

Ps OML if you have your drawings of the mog tranny mating surface I would love to see them.

Oh well, it was worth a shot.

OM604 16v diesel with modified injector pump from OM601 and turbo + IC = +/- 200hp/6000rpm.

OM605 20v Turbodiesel with modified OM602 injector pump (7mm elements) and bigger turbo + IC = 250-> +300hp and 6000 rpm
