: Steering U-joints?

Can you replace the steering rag joint with a u-joint type? Does anybody make a U-joint to replace the rag joint? Pro's and con's? If not, any suggestions on how to keep the rag joint from tearing?

I went to the site but didn't see what I was looking for, so I called and got a part number, but it is $236. Anybody else make them that I could check out?:D

Hydro assist? :flipoff2:

How many have you torn? Never heard of this being much of a problem on Chevys.

I repalced mine when I lifted my truck and no problems at all. I used the joint from the steering knuckle out of a van. The one that connects the column to the steering shaft at the firewall. Maybe it'll work for you.:D

I have torn two, one was in a bad situation and the one that is on there isn't completely broke but torn. It usually is not a problem on Chevy's but my truck has a body lift and I think that is what's causing the problem. I would like to go to Hydro Assit but can't afford it right now( I am almost through with my divorce, maybe then).

I will also check out Flaming River, since posting I dug around in a couple of catalogs and found a couple of companies to look into.

Before I spend the money on a new shaft I will look into the Van option also.
Thanks for the suggestions.:)

I used the van joint too it works well and is real cheap at the junkyard couple of bucks.

the van is the way as long as your box has the small spline gear box i think this box started when they went to the o-ring lined box other than that we use a steering sector off a big truck --mack --peterbuilt you can get a used one of those cheaper than the borg--or flaming river --and make it work with a little work the spline is the same as the early saginaw boxes ---just my 2 cents

I just did this converson to my 72 Blazer. It has a three inch body lift. The rag joint got torn cause it had to be puished out of the shop (It didn't like the 39.5 Swampers)I got the parts from NAPA. Cost about $70 bucks. I kept the part numbers and will give them to you tomorrow.:D

I am going to the Junk yard tomorrow to see what I can find.
If you've got the part numbers from NAPA that would be great, I just might have this fixed by tomorrow afternoon!!:D :D

These are the best quality......$236.00 will save you thousands if you get in accident and get sued.....:( :(

You can always buy just the "joint" from them and spline a 3/4 round stock.....to make your own.....works good....:p :D

I agree with Shaker.Your steering is one place you dont want to take shortcuts. Its worth it just for the piece of mind knowing you have quality components. :)

Finally found the #s

NAPA # 338 = u-joint
Spicer # 10-4-23 =end yoke
Spicer # 10-4-501SX=splined end yoke for box

There are many sizes of that last # so you might have a spline count and input shaft dia. just in case.

So what size spline does the older style non O-ring box have? I tried my van shaft today and it didn't fit at all.

Lots of people use old XJ shafts. I have one, just have not installed it yet.

Is that for an o-ring style box or the older kind?

The gear box on mine was oring style. Just so you know the shaft will replace you complete shaft its not just half. It will be about 1"-2" long so you will have to collapse it with a hammer. NO big deal ill try to get some pics of mine.

It ended up being 13/16" 36 spline. I cut off the flange for the rag joint and welded a piece of 3/4" rod in place and was able to keep the collapsable part of the stock shaft.
