Most people like thier shackle angle right at about 45 degrees or a little less.

It really depends on the arch of the spring and it's total compressed length, a highly arched spring (SUA) will need a shackle long enough to handle the springs fully compressed length. 45 degrees is great if you have the right shackle for the job, but you may find that in order to allow the spring to reach it's full length your static shackle angle may end up more vertical, if it's close to 90 degrees it's time for a longer shackle, if it's past 90 pointing towards the axle it's way past time for a longer shackle, on a highly arched spring of course. The flatter the spring the less it changles length under compression, so it can tolerate a shorter shackle, but make sure that the shackle cannot reverse if it goes past vertical on extension.

I hate it when I have to agree with you :flipoff2: ;)

The morning radio show I listen to was talking about www.worldRPS.com (http://www.worldrps.com/) this morning when my alarm went off, I immediately thought "oh my god, those freaks went world-wide, there goes any change of making a good name for organized 4Wheeling, everyone will know we're all  drinking porn freaks" Then I realized they were talking about the World Rock Paper Scissors Society, too funny

I guess in your Dana 44's case, rock always wins, I guess we should start building axles out of paper..

It should be 20 deg.

I agree this would be a good split of compression/droop just make sure the shackle is long enough to not limit travel.

I've got a 77 CJ7 with a 4" lifted spring. My rear shackles were almost verticle when installed, but after some time the springs have settled and the shackle is at a slight angle. If my shackles were at a 45 degree angle the springs couldn't compress. the shackle would hit the rear bumper.

77 CJ7 258ci/T18/Dana20/stock axles w/1-piece. 33" ats and a recent Fordyce trip. Damn it was fun.
