Here's the deal. I have an 82 CJ-7 with a tired, leaking motor in need of replacement or rebuild. Will an 88 model engine be the same, blockwise? Someone here has an 88 for sale and what I wanna know is can I swap longblocks and use my 82 bolt-ons and still be legal, smogwise. Is there any differerence in the actual engine blocks and heads. Both are 258 6 bangers... :D

Yeah, it's the same

Depending on what "bolt on" terms you mean though depends. The 88 will have different emissions due to the computer controlled Carter.

Thanks... I'm thinking about bolting on my intake and carb, exhaust, brackets, smog stuff, etc... Just basically using the longblock from the 88... ??

Glenn, the motor in britney right now (or at least the block) is a 83 CJ7 258 with my 4.0 top bolted to it ;) It bolted right up included the AA bell housing and everything. The one difference was the pullys and crap. I had to put a spacer in for the main pulley to line up with all my 4.0 pullies and steering crap. Plus the alternator bracket was a little different. I dont think you will have any of those issues though cause you are doing 258 to 258, I went 258 to 242. ;)
