: Tach cluster

I just installed a used tach cluster into my 88 daily driver.
The only thing not working is the temp gauge.
The sender is ok because the other cluster that was in the same zuke worked fine.

I did the lightbulb test that the FSM suggests, and the Gauge passes with flying colors.

Since the test is done at the sender end of the wire, and the gauge passes the test, I suspect that the wire and connectors are fine.

Does the sender have to match the gauge year for year?
I wouldn't think so.

Also, On the back of the tach cluster, there are two plugs, Three wires that go to the ECM reset switch, and the speedo cable.
There is one more black wire that is screwed to a contact on the circuit board. On the other end of this same wire is a spade type plug in a plastic guard. What does this wire go to?
I have checked for voltage with the key in the off position and there is none.-----With the key in the run position, The voltage varies from .2 to 11 volts.
Thanks

Chassis ground.......

But as for the rest of it, I´d be stumped as well...:p

Does yours also have this wire?
Did you see this on a wiring diagram?
Why would I be showing a varying voltage on it while key is in run position?
Thanks for the reply

My cluster is from a 1998 EFI. It has two multi-wire connectors that go to the ECM, the speedo cable and a ground wire. And FWIW, the reset switch on the cluster is internal....

My FSM´s at home, so I couldn´t tell ya right now if this ground wire shows up on the schematic. Sould be there, I´d think.

As to why the voltage would vary, I have no idea..:p What´s the frequency of the voltage shift??

Voltage shift is erratic.
It varies from .2 to 11 volts.
I looked at the wiring diagram in the FSM and didn't see anything on the ground wire.

I´ll take a look at my 1998 FSM and let you know. Tomorrow´s a holiday here, so it won´t be until Monday.......

Thanks Bill,
and to everyone else on this board.
It seems that most problems can be resolved here.

Dale, that's the bias voltage output to the flux capacitor. You need to couple it through the variable inductance tunneling matrix to the emitter drain gate, and be SURE to bypass the reluctance shunt. I usually use 28 gauge Ferrous Iridium Tungstate wire from an old Klystron for this, but I've heard you can use tinfoil too.

I don't think so,
I traced it down and it appears to be to the idiot light that comes on when the headlight fluid is low.

While we are at it, i had my cluster apart this afternoon cleaning it, out of an 88 SJ413/samurai... What the hell does the manual switch that is wired into the speedo itself do? Doesn't even seem as if it is hooked up to any power source... It mounts on the steel bar below the dash near the radio sort of? Any ideas, its not in my wiring schematics.... Hugh

This switch is the reset for the ECM.
If you leave it unhooked, your check engine light will come on.
If you leave the switch in the wrong position, the check engine light will stay on.
