: hydraulic valve ?'s
tuckster 11-14-2002, 12:26 PM 1. I know a power steering pump isn't the best option for pumping into an orbit valve, but I'm cheap. How big of a valve can I run with a stock ps pump?
2. Is there a reference available (in paper or online) that is useful in identifying char lynn and dan foss valves? I've seen online catalogs, but those seem to be just for currently-produced valves. Is there an easier way? I'd like to find a used valve, but I can't figure out what I'm even looking at.
thanks
gunracer1 11-14-2002, 12:34 PM the saginaw pump will work pretty good. and i decide not to go full hydro on my rig, so i have a brand new charlynn valve i will sell for 200.00 mike
tuckster 11-14-2002, 12:38 PM $200 is about what I'd like to pay for the complete setup, but thanks though...
have you run a full-hydro setup before? with a saginaw pump? if so, how big was the valve? I'm sure that the pump will work fine up to a certain point, but I'm trying to find out where that point is.
also, I'll jack my own thread, but why did you decide not to run full-hydro?

PM'd you ;)
Station 11-14-2002, 12:50 PM A Saginaw with the pressure and flow modifications will put out ample flow/pressure for full hydro steer as long as you have a well matched valve.
Some of the hodge podge hydro systems that I have seen put together use orbitrol valves that are meant to have 16-20gpm running through them. Usually these kind of systems have very sloppy control manners, even when going slow on the trail.
Some manufacturers make Orbitrol valves that work well with less than 2gpm in useful displacements. These are your best bet for a sweet handeling full hydro setup.
If you need any help identifying any valve that you come across , let me know, and I will try to help you.

You are passing uo on a seriously sweet deal man. $200 for a new Charlynn valve is great, and I am sure that Mike is loosing more than a few bucks on this.
$200 for everything for your steering.......OK
You usually get what you pay for.
Most offroad tires cost more than that each. The hydro system will outlast many sets of tires.

I know that's a good deal, and it looks like he already has a taker. I don't have 200 bones to throw at an orbit valve today. I might end up paying that much for a valve in the end, but I need to do my research and shopping first. :D
I do live in Ideeho, so ag parts and stores are plentiful, and I have a few friends in the industry. I do appreciate the help. And Station, I'll probably be checking with you for specifics on some valves.
gunracer1 11-14-2002, 01:09 PM here is a pic of what i have put together. it is allnew but i just drive mine on the road to much to go full hydro, so its just assist for me

sceep 11-14-2002, 01:11 PM what was the mounting plate designed to fit??
I'll take it all.
PM'd ya again :D
gunracer1 11-14-2002, 01:16 PM you just use a piece of 1/4" plate with a big hole in the middle and 4 small ones around it. the valve goes on one side the steering adapter bolts to the other and just sadwiches the plate. and sceep its yours, you were first. mike
sceep 11-14-2002, 01:19 PM i meant the mounting plate on that ram.. What did you build that to fit?
Station 11-14-2002, 01:27 PM Looks like the horizontal support bar from a fork lift?
gunracer1 11-14-2002, 01:28 PM the ram is for a toyota fork lift. it is used for the side shift it is made to clip on the rack on the front of a lift. i was just going to cut it off and drill some holes and bolt it on. this is a rebuildable cylinder, a lot of the newer ones are non rebuildable, they are welded solid. mike
broncorob 11-15-2002, 12:11 PM Am I looking at that right? Is it a double ended ram? Which model yota lift did it come from?
sceep 12-23-2002, 07:54 AM I hate to bring this BTT since its been dead for so long but i'm hopeing station will chime back in on it since he seems to be able to be on pirate alot faster than he can answer e-mails. ;) , and i am going to attack this steering over the x-mas break.
sean.
above is the setup i recieved from gunracer. Anything you can tell me about it from the ID tag? Also i will try and get you spline counts off the column tonight.
