What do you like, dislike about your setup? I had a 97 X-Cab 2500 Cummins 4x4 longbed, it was an auto, no problems in 100,000 miles but I sold it when I lost a job I had a couple years ago...anyway I'm getting back into the market for a tow rig / daily driver now and want another CTD...

98 They started with the Ex-Cab shortbed & Cummins...

Anyway what would you do differently, or the same if you were going to pick a tow rig / daily driver with those 3 configurations?

I don't plan on getting a cab over camper at any time either...

Thanks for the input

Brett

I just got a 01 short bed with the Cummins. I have a friend with a SD x-cab long bed and thought it was just too long.

I had a x-cab short but I work construction and have a trailer hooked up every day and could not haul 8' material in the bed with the trailer on so I went to the x-cab long and it is long but not too long. I like it but if you don't need the extra lenght then I would go with the short.

I would go with extra cab long bed, cause I like to be able to throw a bunch of junk in the bed whenever I want....since I drive an extra cab longbed now, I don't think its too long, but you definetly have to get used to the turning radius, or lack there of.

I've had two Dodge Ext-Cab short beds (half ton) and now have an 01' Dodge quad-cab long bed 3/4 ton 4x4. I think ya just get used to whatever you're driving after awhile anyway so... I buy for need or future need. Good thing... 'cause shortly after, I got a deal on a 28ft gooseneck and just bought a Honda 4wheeler. Longer is better in towing... and I can put the 4wheeler in the back with the tailgate closed and a bed toolbox. If you're not planning to pull a gooseneck or have the need for the longbox... then the short bed would be easier to park... if that's important to ya? My next truck will be even bigger... going full 4 door long-bed dually in either the Ford or the Dodge. Not sure on the new ones... but when I was looking for my current Dodge.. it was harder to find the longbed than the shortbeds around here... like 5 to 1... everyone wanted the shortbeds... on the flip side... it was impossible to find a used longbed 4x4 compared to used shortbeds... and the cost was higher. But that was back in 2000.

I've got a 97 Ram with CTD/Auto/4x4, extended cab long bed. I like it very well for towing and haulign, but as a DD, I have to "strategically park" to make sure I can manuever out of parking spaces.... Overall, I'd keep what I have.

I ended up buying a std cab long bed. I thought I would hate the std cab, but I really love it. I am thinking that ex cab would make for more clutter which I hate. When I go to buy a new truck I will look at the ex cab though.

I put money down on a Cummins QC with the long bed before I drove it. When I finally drove it, I didn't like it. The balance was way off, and it seemed to wander a lot. I drove the short bed, and bought it. I had a long bed standard cab with the gasser, and it was fine, too.

I don't really miss the long bed, I got a tonneau for the short bed, and I use it as a big trunk.

I'll never own another short box again in my life. Then again, I haul stuff from time to time, like full sheets of ply or drywall etc etc 8' beds awful nice to have rather than leavin the tailgate hangin down. Either way I really like my dodge ecab long bed dually :D

Got a 1998.5 Dodge QC w/utility bed, didn't like the idea of the utility bed at first...awsome now, so much storage space for tools and spare parts, plus it smooths out the ride:D

Averaged 18.3mpg from NY to Alaska, high of 20mpg low of 16mpg

Definatly go for the quad cab if you can
and hold out to get 4wheel drive

Have owned two '96 Ram 2500 Club Cab 4wds - one Diesel/5spd Long Bed, one 360 V8/auto Short bed. The long bed is more useful and not a penalty as far a parking spaces go. If I could get the SWB truck in it w/o a worry I could get the LWB in it w/o a worry. Can't comment on the difference in ride between LWB & SWB since the diesel weighs so much more than the V8.

I now drive a '00 2500 QC 4wd - Diesel/6spd LWB. The QC is so much more functional compared to the club cab it's ridiculous.

I'd get a long bed.

Get a quad cab long bed. If you get a tool box with a short bed, then the bed ends up being like 5 feet.

I once had a short wide bed with a tool box. Coun't haul anything in the back.

Also, if you're going to tow alot, get the 6 speed.

well I've only had it a few days, but I'm loving the hell out of it! It'll be my DD and it's replacing a ZJ, just a little getting used to, but it's worth it:D

01 Quad Cab Long Bed 4x4. Love it....wouldnt have it any other way.

The way I see it......Quad cab is an absolute necessity.

Long bed has proven itself valuable it SOOOOOOO many ways already. I especially love putting a stack of 4x8 sheets of (enter item here) and putting up the tailgate

I got the NV4500 5 speed, I have heard of issues with both the autos AND the 6 speed NV 5600's. No direct experience though......just the he said she said shit

I love my long bed.

I can think of a million reasons to have a Long Bed but only a couple to have a Short bed.

If you have a toolbox definetly get the LB since it takes up alot of room. Having a toolbox with a Short bed is an awfully small space(kinda like a sport track)

I personally like because I can keep my toolbox and still load my Quad and shut the tailgate.
