: speaking of roll cages...
Kilby 11-15-2002, 12:02 PM Has anybody "beefed up" their stock Jeep "cage"?
i.e.: Added gussets? Tubes? Got pics or info?
... or is that just a flat STOOOPID fawking idea from a bitch ass newbie, and I need to go to J-fawkin-U?
Wes in TN 11-15-2002, 12:32 PM I would ditch the stock show bar and start over. My brother rolled our old YJ a year ago and after going over twice at 15mph it was all but completely folded over on its side. This was a barrel roll caused by sliding into a ditch on a snowy road. Now this was on a completely stock YJ, cage included, but cage was totaled after that wreck. The bars are just too weak to make a truely sound cage out of.

Wrong.:flipoff2: The stock 80s CJ hoop is plenty strong enough to build a cage off of, and you can tie it in if you want. I'll look for a pic, but I have a stock CJ hoop, Smittybilt front hoop and spreaders and custom bent rear supports like an early 90s YJ, cut off the stock CJ down supports.
seajeeper 11-15-2002, 12:45 PM I added a Tennessee Off Road (through the dash) cage to mine. I welded up the 3 piece main hoop, welded the TOR cage to it, TOR cage included front side bars, dash bar, spreaders, and rear cross bar. I added gussets (3/4" DOM) in the corners at the main hoop.
Pics somewhere but no server.....
sceep 11-15-2002, 12:56 PM centeer hoop in mine is the stock cj hoop...
sjb83cj 11-15-2002, 01:01 PM I have the same set-up Brad has and the smitty hoop bar will give before the stock cj bar will.

Kilby 11-15-2002, 01:18 PM Are TJ stock "cages" too flimsy to work with?
Keith Strong 11-15-2002, 01:34 PM This was a stock YJ cage.
Jacob 11-15-2002, 01:36 PM what about a YJ factory roll bar?
i was going to use it as a foundation for the cage in my 5 but if its not safe i will custom make the whole cage

Beast40 11-15-2002, 01:53 PM Pic of my first cage, all the added bars run off the factory main hoop and rear bars.

Mine is starting to like like Keith's. It's a TOR kit, with some custom rear cross bars. One question that has come to mind is positioning of the front outside lateral support that runs from the stock rear hoop to the front hoop. These replace the POS stock bars that bolt to the winshield. I put mine the same place as in keiths picture, inline with the rear support. I'm wondering if I should move them out to the outside some more, inline with the center of the front hoop curve? Moving them to the outside might give better head protection, but would not line up with the main rear support making it weaker. Any opinions, if you can make sense of what I'm saying :D ?
Keith Strong 11-15-2002, 02:54 PM I know this sounds kinda lame....and cosmetic....but the one thign I DO NOT like about my front spreaders being in like that is my bikini top does not fit tightly. I know its no big deal, but when a gust of wind come up it tears at the velcro straps.
Like I said, its a minor thing, butmy next cage will be ALL custom and will address stupid issues like that.
CA_YJ 11-15-2002, 02:58 PM I kept my stock cage and added to it. Sometimes I wish I would have started from scratch though. Oh well..I'll roll it then start over:flipoff2:

GPERX4 11-16-2002, 05:32 AM I know it isn't a YJ, but a guy I work with rolled his TJ six times.
He and his passenger were not hurt at all they were sore. The Jeep was totaled so the factory stuff held up to protect them.
