It will read 2/3rds of actually engine speed.

is there anyway to recalibrate it to read right:confused:

Not easily.....as far as I know. You could build an active voltage
scaler or something but would take some work to put the circuit
together.

Dakota Digital has a tach recalibrator for $80 http://dakotadigital.com/products.cfm?Category=122

Get a handheld tach and a potentiometer (a variable resistor). Wire the pot into the tach wire (cut the wire splice it in - simple) and then hook up the handheld tach. Adjust the pot until the handheld tach and the tach on your gauge cluster read the same. Check it at various RPMs to be sure you've calibrated it correctly.

You can also contact Downey Offroad at 562.949.9424 and order part #33616. It's a potentiometer for doing engine swaps where the tach needs recalibration. The cost is $9.95.

The V6 radiator will mount to the core support the same as the 4 cylinder radiator. I *think* the hose connections are the same too.

He is using a 6 cyl tach on a 4 cyl engine...the pot won't
increase the current to the meter...only works the other way.

Besides why not use a Radio Shack or similar pot for a buck or two?

You're right, it won't work. I see the flaw in my advice. I suggested the Downey unit because I felt it would be easier for him to use an enclosed pot of the correct size rather than hit Radio Shack and have to figure it out from the beginning. The Radio Shack pot would work just fine.

Vova....A V6 cluster should work fine with no mods.

I couldn't help to notice your post on the pirate4x4 list about the tach from a V6 into a 4cyl. I did the same thing, I bought a tach from a V6 out off of ebay... there is no modification necessary!... simply take the clear face off the front... and unscrew the either 2 or 3 screws from behind the tach that holds the tach in place... then... when you get remove the tach from the gauge cluser housing... look for a little dial on the side of the circuit board... it is white. adjust that to adjust the tach. use a multimeter or such to find the exact RPM while the engine is running, and by trial and error, find the right adjustment on the dial to adjust the tach. you will have to reinstall the tach each time during the trail and error process. Sorry that i don't have any pictures or anything. I would tell you how far the dial is to be turned, but i did this about 9 months ago and have forgotten. Hope this helps you some.

It sounds like theres an ajustment inside the cluster........has anyone hear of this:confused:

From my web page:

Toyota Tach Mod

http://www.mindspring.com/~jayk3/toyota/tachmod.htm

Philippe Maier adds this about modifying newer trucks......
"Jay Kopycinski documented his 4.3 conversion and described how to convert the tach on his vehicle. He describes using
a ten turn pot (5k ohm) on the tach posts. I went to perform this modification on my 1990 4Runner SR5 which now has a
V8.

I found that there was already a small white potentiometer on the circuit board of the tach. I took an original reading
(42.5k ohm) then reinstalled the tach into the instrument cluster. I removed the speedo to gain access to the philips style
screw on the little white pot on the board (it points towards the speedo). Then I reconnected the instrument cluster
(temporarily), started the vehicle, and adjusted the pot until the factory toy tach matched the actual RPMs at different
key RPMS (ie. 2000, 2500, 3000, ....). Bingo! No modifications required!

Works very well. The final reading on the little white pot was around 31.1 k ohms. My guess is that you should probably
be able to make this adjustment on most post-1990 vehicles (maybe someone else can confirm). Time to do this
adjustment, about 30-60 minutes. Sure beats having that other tach mounted to my steering column ! And just as
accurate."

Hey toy2 that guy that emailed you is right. When I got my sr5 guage I took it apart & was ready to go to radio shack to get a potentiometer but then I discovered it already had one. I simply hooked up my aftermarket tach that I had & adjusted the new tach to read the same. I checked it at several different rpms to make sure it was right. Piece o cake!:D

That's one thing that I love about pirate 4x4 .............all you have to do is search or ask and you will get an answer.......even if it's not the one your looking for:D ....great tech for the toy tach;)

THIS WORKS! thanks to this thread that i just found and read i just calibrated a v6 cluster tach to work on my 4cyl. i had it connected and screwed in w/o the fron plastic and played with that white adj. dial. if anyone else does this i figured out when you set the needle on you have to give it a certain amount of back spring. i put the needle on so it pointed about inbeteen the last 0 and the R where it says X1000RPM and then would pull it back over the stopper. i got the most accurate readings when the needle would slighly twitch at 0 when i turned ignition on. if it wasnt enough it would twitch and go to 500rpm or 1000 or whereever before the motor even started. you want to make the starting position at 0 not 500 or -500 ect. i messed around with it for a while before getting it almost perfect. its probably accurate give or take 100 rpm. i had another tach i hooked up to calibrate it with. sorry if this is old news im just excited this thread helped me hopefully it can help others.

one more thing i think i broke my oil temp gauge. for whatever reason its now stuck in about the middle no matter engine on or off even when i took it back out to reassemble it. its just stuck at about 30% of the way up. i dont have a sending unit so idont know if it worked before or not. but would be kind of depressing if it wont work now kuz i broke it making the tach work. i might have bumped the needle im not sure. just noticed it was stuck in the middle for some reason idk
