Hey, I saw a Licoln 300 AMP AC welder in the paper for $225.

Good deal or not?

not much info there...is it a stick/mig/tig welder? what's the duty cycle? what do you plan on doing with it? have you ever welded? if you haven't welded, i doubt you'd need 300 amps right off the bat.

I've done quite a bit of stick welding on my old man's 400 amp Lincoln and a little bit on his 110-volt Argon/whatever wirefeeed welder. But I'm no expert.

The ad in the paper doesn't specify the type, but I assumed it was a stick because of the 300 amps--I don't know though... I've tried to call the guy a couple of times, but he's never there. So it might be a moot point by now...

So, if it's a stick, is it an O.K. deal?

Thanks,
Jake

It's a pretty good deal for a stick welder. I bought basically the same machine at 225 Amps, used, for $175 or so. But really, when is the next time you are going to crank up to 300A? One advantage of this is that it gives you a higher duty rating at lower amps, although I have yet to 'time out' my 225 amp machine.

If you have $200 burning a hole in your pocket, and you need a welder, this is not a bad choice. Either you know how to weld stick well now, or you'll learn quickly.

Skitzo,
I kinda like the stick better for cutting reasons, but to each his own I guess...

Trango,
Thanks for the info.

stick for cutting? man, that's a way to burn up a rod. try oxy/a - works much better. unless you can get a plasma cutter - lotsa fun!!

uhh ever heard of carbon arc? I can cut through probably realistically 8" w/ a 300 amp arc w/ a carbon arc setup... Cleaner cheaper and safer than any oxy setup. would you rather buy a $100 carbon arc or regulators, hoses, tips, bottles, etc, etc... you decide.

Uh yeah, I know.

I don't get it. I don't even have a welder yet and you want me top go buy a separate (wirefeed) welder, an oxy/acetylene torch, and plasma cutter...

I think you're missing the point here...

But thanks--Really!

Isn't any stick welding a good way to burn a rod?

ok, maybe you didn't notice that was sort of a joke - carbon arc cutting uses a NONCONSUMABLE electrode (last i heard) and is not the same as what i was talking about. so, if thats "stick welding", then no, you don't burn a lot of rod. you CAN cut with a consumable electrode, and it fries the rod really, really fast - which is what i was referring to.

so, uh, maybe you guys missed the point. jeez, lighten up!
