: yj axle swap. should I ???
90wrangler 11-15-2002, 08:56 PM ok i got ahold of a killer deal on a truck with a ford 9 inch in the rear and a driver side drop dana 44 front. (i think the ford is in the 1970's area year)So i was wondering how much work needs to be done with these axles to work and if i should leave the axles full width casue i need this for a daily driver, or have them narrowed, which if they are not to wide on a yj, then i don't care. I know i can't pass up this offer for a whole truck with a 302 and these axles for 250 bucks. so i would like to know some info of people using these axles in there yj and some pix also would be great thx alot 90wrangler.:D :D
DozerDan 11-16-2002, 12:15 AM weld some perches on for soa, get some 5 on 5.5 rims?? and go with it.. make it work as you go.. if it doesnt work grab another beer and another welding rod it will all work out in the end
Insayn 11-16-2002, 04:17 AM I use to run a 78 Ford F150 9" rearend and a 79 Ford Bronco frontend. I ran them fullwidth and loved it. It gave me a wider stance for a little more stability. The cast section for the radius arm mounts cannot be cut off because they are the tube.
Earlier years may run a smaller u-joint in the front or have drum brakes on the frontend. The earlier years also have varying size 9" in the rear. More than likely the shaft will be a 31 spline one, but it is preferred to get a big bearing housing. Check the year of the truck and make sure you know what your getting.
90wrangler 11-16-2002, 05:58 AM sounds good soo far, preaty sure i'm going to go full width, the tires are 6 lug is that any better?
Po' riggity 11-16-2002, 12:42 PM For 250 bucks, you shouldnt even have to ask that question! Buy it, stick the 302 in it, and the axles under it. :D

doctor_G 11-16-2002, 01:49 PM Oh, hell yeah!
Go for it and don't look back. ;)
90wrangler 11-16-2002, 03:22 PM alright i just whent and looked at it again, and it turns out that it is an f-150 and has the coils on the front, and is 5 lug? so now what just cut everything off the front end that has to do with coils and put perches on it and everything is fine or what?
Ropeburn 11-16-2002, 07:20 PM I've done that swap and it's some what more involved than just bolting them up and going. I've got 79 f-150 axles under mine. The nice thing about later years is older ones have drums in the front, are low pinion and the weaker 9" housing. I had to retube the front end to do away with the cast arm mounts, and went with Chevy 44 knuckles and spindles but the ford disks and hubs. The steering uses hysteer arms and chevy tierod ends.
Hope that helps some.
90wrangler 11-16-2002, 08:23 PM that helps, but now i'm not sure if i should just go done to a pick and pull and get the axles there becasue i can get a year that has leaf in the front, and probaly spend about the same.

Really.... My radius arm mounts cut off ok. Took some doing, but they came off. However, mine is a '77 Bronco D44.

That is because in 77 the arms were not cast.

Also, you'd need a 3/4 ton for leafs (read 8 wheel lugs) or a 1965 or older axle. (Or a 77-79 super cab< but these are more rare)

so why can't you just leave some of it there or will it hang down and hit shit or what? i think i might want to go toa wrecking yard today and look at the axles to see what i want to do.

You want to weld perches and brackets to cast?
SeanYJ93 11-17-2002, 12:31 PM hey 90wrangler,
i am i a bit more involved in a similiar situation right now. i cant decide whether to run the '79 with cast mounts or hold out to one with welded mounts
do a search with my name and alot will come up, with pics and testimonials.
i will hold out for 2 more weeks to find one with out cast mounts, and if not i will get a '79 with cast mounts and go from there. insayne has one like that, nice pics, and helped me out
later

Sean You don't want a 78 - 79 axle! My 79 axle had a 1/8" thick inner tube! Check the Ford section of a good brake down on the Ford Reverse Spiral.
Picture will be gone by next month.

Edit -> That is the voice of experience , I totaled an axle listing to other people that thought they knew about this "reverse rotation" axle.
90wrangler 11-17-2002, 09:51 PM alright this helps alot i think i will just hold out and get axles from a pick-n-pull unless u think it would be cheaper to do something to it..
