so i'm working on my brows van 350 with a q-jet nothing out of the ordnary

anyway i'm trying the get it so it runs good cold and warm up quicker, it runs fine when warm.

when the truck was warm I did a few quick WOT kicks when it was warm and noticed that the secondary choke (air valve I think is its name) is not opining. then I kinda rolled into WOT and still it does not move. is this normal and if not what do you recomend. What if I just wire it open permently. I can open it with my fingure and nothing seems to be binding.

thanks alot for any input

The secondary air door opens at low vacume (ie high load). It will not open in park/neutral

If need be, you can soften up the spring on the air valve. It requires removal of the carb, then there is an adjustment screw underneath the air valve pivot (on the left side I think). I really wouldn't recommend messing with it unless it is known that the carb was not original to the engine.

I agree. If you make it so the secondaries open too soon the engine will just fall on it's face because unlike a Holly double pumper there's no accelerator pump/jets for the secondaries. Also they will not open untill the choke is in the fully open position.

You probably have a secondary lockout that is not disengaging. Its on the secondary thottle blade on the right side of the carb. You will see a pin sticking out of it--if the lockout plate is hitting it then it will never open. May just require an adjustment (bending) or you may have a vacumm hose leak or a vacuum pull off valve is not working. This can be wired open all the time if need be but make sure you don't have a vacuum leak anyway. This will not make it run better when cold unless the choke vacuum pull off is bad also.

To reinfoce the correct answers above, the secondary air door will not EVER open up unless the engine is UNDER LOAD with the throttle wide open (or close to it). There is NO WAY to get it to open up in the driveway if the carb is set up correctly with all the linkages connected. The vacuum dashpot on the side of the carb holds it closed when vacuum is high (no load on engine). You can tell if it is opening when you are going down the road by the sound and surge in power from the engine.
