: Junkyard TBI shopping...for an '80 350...
BillaVista 11-16-2002, 08:13 PM I thought it was pretty simple, any 305/350 87-92 Chevy TBI car, truck or van, but pref truck/van. Get it all from 1 vehicle if possible. Get the:
intake
TB
Injectors
wiring
sensors
computer
distributor, coil and module
but now from the dim recesses of my memory I'm recalling something about certain intakes not fitting certain heads?
What's the scoop? Somebody fill me in please.
Charly, Brett....chime in!
Thanks
Charly 11-16-2002, 08:31 PM Your dim recesses are correct.
If I were you, I would get an adapter plate from Holley to put that TB unit on your current manifold (I'm curious.... you got single or dual plane on that race car engine?).
YJ4LIFE had revealed that Summit (IIRC) was selling them for like $12 online.
That freak I work for used one of these to do the GM TBI on his 302 (in that puke orange EB):flipoff2:
The only sensor I can think of that is mounted in the TBI intake itself is the CTS, but I'm sure you can "T" that to the temp sender with decent results.
Charly
P.S. I am glad you are follwing through with this. Oh and keep in mind there are different injectors between 305 and 350s, same TB unit though.

Ugh...this is going to be embarassing....how do I tell?
Me know exactly jack squat about engines (master of stating the obvious)...maybe we can talk about "neckdowns":flipoff2:

That the one with the incredible rock rash:D Recently saved from disaster by a blue plastic rope :flipoff2:

I still dream about your idle :flipoff2: Not wild about the tires....but you guys idle with the best of them :flipoff2:
Charly 11-17-2002, 03:14 AM I did a little research on the third gen board this morning.
I was mistaken, it was PAW that had them for cheap (not sure if they still do), Summit (as you saw) has them for about $45.

Tons of TBI info on that forum.
ALEX Bronco 11-17-2002, 05:10 AM Bill,
The later TBi intakes won't fit your engine easily. You can enlarge the center holes on the intake with ok results. As butthead mentioned. the easiest way would be with an adapter, but I think you have a stock GM intake with the quadrajet spread bore pattern. The adapters available are for the square bore and don't quite fit the spread bore intakes that well. Spread bore means the secondary butterflys are larger then thhe primarys( those are the front ones;) ) So, you have some options. Make the TBI intakke work. Make an adapter to fit your intake. or, get a square bore intake and use an adapter on it. If I remember right, that intake you have is pretty restictive anways. You might be happier with the performance of an Edelbrock performer or performer RPM. You don't really need the RPM , but with the cam you have(sounds healthy) you would get som great power.
As far as a donor vehicle, I would stick with a truck/van 5.7. you can use 4.3 or 5.0 but you will need diffent injectors and prom for the ECM. the knock sensor and knock module is also diffent, but probaly not an issue for what you are doing.
Brett
I have done a few of these myself for friends jeeps the intake isn't that bad if you have time. Wiring harness has come from mostly 4.3 astro vans using same computer with chip change. the diy-efi.org site has a wiring diagram with the pinouts listed as to where they go and what voltage. good luck you will like it when finished
Bill - just a thought, but I am kinda in the same boat. I have a carbed 350 that I was not gonna leave alone - after years of trail riding with EFI the thought of a carb was not one I looked forward to.
It just so happened I came across a good deal on a club member selling his propane set-up off of his 350, and thought "why not?"
Definately a far cheaper option that converting to EFI, and I can;t wait to do the conversion :)
Anyway - just an option to consider ;)
Charly 11-17-2002, 07:18 AM Brett,
I'm pretty sure I saw an spreadbore adapter for the TBI unit on Summit's page. Maybe it's a double adapter.....
BillaVista 11-17-2002, 07:31 AM Charly,
3rd gen...that's cars right? Firebirds and Camaro's? Which years? I had an 88 Firebird once - loved that car.
Brett,
My intake is an Edelbrock - what model / plane etc. I couldn't say. The carb is a Holley - which I thought were all square bore, no? (but we know how much I know about engine stuff!) I peeked at the carb - the venturis all appear to be the same diameter?? It was risky - docs orders not to touch a tool for another 3 weeks minimum....I told my wife " Aww Honey....I was jost looking!"
So I'm thinking that I need the square bore to TBI adapter and I'm set?
What's the rundown of all the sensors / locations? I will have to be doing battle with the redneck yard deamons (as an example - the owner of a local yard and VP of a local club swore to Chad and I that there was no such thing as a Dodge of Chevy kingpin front axle!!) and need to be fairly sure I get what I need.
Also - is there any way to visually ID a 5.7 from a 5.0?
Thanks guys.
DRM - I will keep that in mind. I always meant to find out why the Canadian Military
converted all of thier vehicles to propane and then back again shortly therafter. Dunno if was a temperature issue up here or just to keep Bombardier in business??? But yea - carb=not so cool in my experience.
YELLER BLAZER 11-17-2002, 08:13 AM I did the conversion on Yeller 2 years ago and have never looked back. I modified the TBI intake to fit my motor, I obtained a wiring diagram for the year and model that the stuff came off of, cut the harness all open and pulled out everything that did not relate to the fuel system rewraped everyting and installed it. It works and looks like it rolled off of the assembly line that way. Its not real difficult just take your time, label all of the wires and triple check before cutting a wire. Also the plastic bulkhead thing were all of the wires pass through the original fire wall can be removed, pull the black plastic cover off and start tapping on the resin that is inside and it will break apart and fall off of the wires, but don't get too aggressive you'll smash the wires.
Charly 11-17-2002, 08:43 AM Yeah, third gen is Camaros and Firebirds, most came with TBI during that era.
The IAC and TPS are on the TB unit.
The CTS is right near the water neck on the manifold.
On my 86 G20 van 350, the EGR and Map sensor were on a bracket mounted to the intake. I'm not sure where the ESC (knock module....this is flat, black and about 2" x 3") was located stock, because they didn't include it with my engine (for some reason). I used a Painless harness too.
Knock sensor is down low on the pass side (by pan rail) and the oil pressure fuel pump cutoff is by the rear intake rail (driver's side).
That's all I can think of off the top of my head right now, hope that helps.
ALEX Bronco 11-17-2002, 09:32 AM Bill,
My mistake. if you can, get a pic of the intake, will help ID it. I have all of the wiring diagrams you will need, I have modified these harness' before and it is quite simle. You can usethe car TBI setup but they use a different harness and computer due to the use of an air temp. sensor. Best chance of finding a good donor car would be a caprice with the police package. All of these I have seen are either 305 or 350 Chevrolet. The plain Caprices usually have the carb. 307 y engine Olds. engine.
I have some extra TBI stuff if you can't find anything up there. Let me know what you need.
Brett
BillaVista 11-17-2002, 01:41 PM Brett,
E-mail me your phone # to samfans@sprint.ca so we can chat.
I have D60 and D44 parts for possible trade if interested. But I'm sure I can find some good ol' Yankee bucks around here somewhere too.
There's some lousy pics of the engine at
