: Air Shocks on ZJ

Has anyone ran just air shocks, for example the fox 2.0's on their full bodied zj? I'm on the fence and am swapping 3/4 ton axles under it and would like to eliminate the coils. my total weight on it with a full tank and cooler is just under 5000 lbs iirc.

Id think you'd need 2.5s up front, 2.0s in back?

I agree with him i would not put 2.0 in the front of a zj. The 2.5s will work though. I run 2.5 14's in front and 2.5 16's in back. I would not run them in a DD, im not sure if yours is though. With 14 you will not have to cut the hood open, but with 16's in rear you have to cut into the body. If you want a cheaper coilover (still not as cheap as airshocks) look at FOA, good shocks for a good price.

Hope this helps

thanks for the input, I don't know if I will get 12" or 14" or run 14" front 12" rear or what yet, thats a hurdle I will cross down the road, just wondering if the air shocks are a logical replacement for coils

That would depend on your "logic" and what you use your ZJ for? I have heard of guys using them for street driven vehicles, with shock absorbers and a anti sway bar you might be OK.

I planned on running shocks and the 3/4 tons will have plenty of room to mount swaybar links to. The fox site said they were fine for street applications. The zj will never see bigger than a 35-37 and it does see some rocks, but nothing like Moab.

By the time you buy good shocks, for just a bit more could prob get coil-overs and they wouldn't leave you stranded if you blew one up.

Either way, I'm going to have to run shocks as well as airshocks or coilovers. I very highly doubt I will blow up an air shock, I don't baja around.

IMHO I’d just keep the coils or go coil-over if you are DD your jeep. I personally don’t think 2.0 air shocks are big enough. You will have to mess with the oil and nitro to get it perfect on your rig, especially if you DD.

I wrote a post a while back about them on a DD this is what I said:

“They are not as simple or cheap as they sound. If you run them all day on the street the oil heats and it is possible to change the ride height and dampening effect of the shocks. Second air shocks have little roll resistance, so you will need to run a sway bar to counteract the body roll caused by the air shocks. Third, even on trail rigs running air shocks can have tendencies to unload without warning, which is why you see many trail rigs running suck down winches along with air shocks”

I’ve also noticed they can leak nitro from the Schrader valve which can be bad on a DD. IDK maybe mine just leak.

Hope this helps.

If you are dead set on air shocks
Look at sway-a-ways they have a bigger main shaft than foxes. 2.25 vs 2.375
Also rock Equipment/TK1 racing has a 2.0 with a 2.5 main shaft.

Im not 100% dead set on air shocks, I've just seen a lot of people that run them and like the idea of not having the twang of coils under articulation. I have no idea what I'm doing with a coilover setup and wouldn't have the first clue what to get as far as springs. I figured the air shock way would be the best for me. Don't they make them with finned remote reservoirs to dissipate heat?

If you do air shocks I wouldn't recommend the fox's their 2.0s are only rated for 500 lb per corner. I would highly recommend sway a ways or the ballistic fab ones they have a 1000 lb weight rating per corner. I personally bought the ballistic fabs. I haven't ran them yet will in couple of months. I know 3 other people running the SAW and love them.

thanks, I will have to look into those. I didnt realize 2.0's werent rated for much weight

the SAW and ballistic fab 2.0s are rated for 1000 lbs just not the fox's.

If it helps at all, I'd like to mention that our shocks are now shipping faster than ever! Typically within about 24 hours of the order. Let me know if I can be of assistance. Dave
