: fuel injection guru's...motor wont start after swap.
lv2whl 11-17-2002, 12:47 PM I recently swapped the 2.5 lt 4 cyl out of my 86 XJ. The motor was rebuilt and everything should be good. I also replaced the fuel pump. Now i cant get the truck to start. I have tested the fuel pump out of the truck, so i know it works. But i turn it over and nothing happens. No fuel is getting sprayed down the throttle body. I took off the fuel inlet hose and turned the motor over, and no fuel came out. Could anybody tell me whats going on? If you have any i deas, please fill me in cause i am lost. Thanks, Sam.
mudtruck44 11-17-2002, 03:37 PM When you turn the key on, does the check engine light come on?
Oxjockey 11-17-2002, 04:16 PM It could be a few things that I can think of. IOD fuse, FP fuse, FP relay, wiring, hose hookup...
Make sure you have your hoses on the correct sides, does the FP kick on when you just turn the key to the run position?

postal 11-17-2002, 04:57 PM Need more details to help. Did you swap in a different engine, or just a new, rebuilt 2.5 liter? I have had the same thing happen on a Chevy V8 swap, so I may be able to help.
lv2whl 11-18-2002, 02:22 PM mudtruck44- the check engine light does not come on.
Oxjockey- the fuel pump does not kick on. I beleive the hoses are correct, and i have tried replacing the relay, nothing happened.
Postal- The engine was the same 2.5 lt, out of the same year. But i got it frm another guy off the board. He had it rebuilt and bored over, and then decided to go to a 4.3 lt. Vortec.
I really appreciate your help. Tell me if this additional info helps, thanks, Sam.
Keith Strong 11-18-2002, 03:14 PM Bad Ground -- Or more specifically NO GROUND
so you could run a 12 volt wire directly to your FP.....then you should get fuel pressure....then it should start. Then you can go back and TS the FP 12 volt line probably starting with the FPR.

Yup!!If yer rig has the plastic interior panels inplace, look behind the left, rear panel where the spare tire would mount. There is a single wire coming out of the harness and screwed into the inner fender sheet metal, this is yer FP ground and a good place to start.
lv2whl 11-19-2002, 04:49 PM I forgot to mention when i first realized there was a problem, i hooked up a spare harness i had to the FP harness. I hooked up a 12v line and a ground to the new harness just to see if i could get the truck started. I flipped the switch and heard the fuel pump kick on. then i turned over the motor and tried to get it to start, the fuel got all backed up right at the inlet of the throttle body, like there was a valve that wasn't opening. the presurre caused some fuel to start dripping out of the inlet.
I also just put a new relay in and nothing changed.
Let me know if that sparks anything in anyones mind. I appreciate your help. Sam.
P.S.- I gonna go check that ground out.
mudtruck44 11-20-2002, 03:57 PM If the check engine does not come on, there is no communication from the ECM. This means the fuel pump won't run and more importantly the injectors will not fire. After an engine swap, the most likely culprit would be no ground for ECM or blown fuse from a grounded wire. If your fuses are good, is there power at them? If you know that all of the grounds are good it could be the computer, but that is last resort.
