I think the motor is okay for this setup, but I don't think the Rover transmission (okay the rover tranny/LT230 input gear spline wear issue) is up to the power.
Why not swap in a domestic tranny and cure your diesel cravings along with any worrys about snapping a rover tranny and the spline wear issue? :) You can go to several adaptor shops (AA stands out) for the adaptor if you need it.
I have traded several e-mails with Clarke Williams and I he is starting his GM 6.2/6.5 - NV4500 kit that re-uses the LT230 if you choose to go that route.

any issues here associated with the front axle housing no being able to support the load of the new weight under offroad conditions?

6.2 with a SM465, AA adapter to a Dana 18, Woods drive shafts and a Salisbury rear end. Three leaf parabolics front and rear.
It works. Get 25mpg on the highway. Pulls like a champ on and off road. Blew past a 90 on a steep mnt grade (Snoqualmi Pass I-90)
Doing any deisel coversion is going to run some money, and this is no different.
But it works :)

any issues here associated with the front axle housing no being able to support the load of the new weight under offroad conditions? I do not think so. The British military did go to a Salibury (really a Dana 60) front axle on the armored and SAS vehicles, but that *probably* had more to do with issues with 3rd member strength.
My guess is based upon the weight of the LR diesels which are within 100lbs of the 6.2l so that probably isn't the issue.
