bump ttt for some new stuff in 'da works...

working on mounting dual 5 Gal. Scepter MFC's :)

beefed up the STM a little... and threw some paint on 'er so's she don't get that orange color to 'er. ;)

I gotta say here... I picked this thing up for $ 20. laying around as scrap at my local metal works... it was a warped twisted up mo fo... and I had to take 'er apart and reweld the damn thing... just to be able to use it... It's still not perfect. Nor ever will be...
But it's gonna do it's job whether it wants to or not. :whip:

Meh... I'm not out to win a ribbon for first prize here...
but as far as function... should hold 'da fort.

http://i1191.photobucket.com/albums/z465/DellTaco00/MFCmounting37.jpg

welded up the bottom flat stock that supports the bottom of the cans

http://i1191.photobucket.com/albums/z465/DellTaco00/MFCmounting40.jpg

http://i1191.photobucket.com/albums/z465/DellTaco00/MFCmounting41.jpg

http://i1191.photobucket.com/albums/z465/DellTaco00/MFCmounting43.jpg

cans swell somewhat... and still seemed to fit fairly well...
they don't seem excessively tight... they are snug enough that they won't rattle around... but they seem to tilt out of the carrier with ease.

http://i1191.photobucket.com/albums/z465/DellTaco00/MFCmounting48.jpg

http://i1191.photobucket.com/albums/z465/DellTaco00/MFCmounting49.jpg

Here's some hardware removed temporarily
and the mess I've created in 'da garage. :saw::welder:

http://i1191.photobucket.com/albums/z465/DellTaco00/MFCmounting45.jpg

Next up, is to weld on that STM to the uprights...
and get busy with fabbing up the mounting plate for the fuel can basket.

things have been a little busy... so bare with me...

tomorrow I gotta replace brakes/rotors on all 4 corners of Da Woo
so that'll cut me short on working on the fuel can chit. :(

TacoDell
03-02-2011, 08:05 PM
changing out the brakes on the dd went easy...
so's... had a little time to get some mock ups going...

here's the spare tire mount... tacked on good...
gonna be permanent... just ran outta weld wire.

http://i1191.photobucket.com/albums/z465/DellTaco00/M100%20Specter%20MFC%20mount/MFCmounting64.jpg

http://i1191.photobucket.com/albums/z465/DellTaco00/M100%20Specter%20MFC%20mount/MFCmounting63.jpg

Mounted the spare tire to 'er... just to see where it sits
just a hair off my measurement... but Imma call 'er good.

http://i1191.photobucket.com/albums/z465/DellTaco00/M100%20Specter%20MFC%20mount/MFCmounting67.jpg

http://i1191.photobucket.com/albums/z465/DellTaco00/M100%20Specter%20MFC%20mount/MFCmounting66.jpg

http://i1191.photobucket.com/albums/z465/DellTaco00/M100%20Specter%20MFC%20mount/MFCmounting60.jpg

Then got busy mocking up the fuel carrier positioning...

seems I have a choice... of high or low positioning.

I'm leaning towards the higher tho'
'cause I really didn't want to block the view of the oem style reflectors.
Then I'd have to buy something to mount to the carrier's rearward side.
eh... maybe both could be incorporated. :dunno:
I'll have to think about it I guess.

Low...

whatch'a think ?

In the low position, why does it matter if you block the reflectors, since you can still see the tail lights? (Maybe it's a specific state legality thing?)

Also, how does the spare tire fit on when that fuel can holder is on there?

neh... law enforcement is not an consideration.

I realize the "low mount" is better for COG and such...
but I don't like the lights nor the reflectors having visual interference.
Nor do I like the departure angle of the carrier in the low position...
call me fickle.

TacoDell
03-03-2011, 07:41 PM
and here's my main reason for my leaning towards the "high" mount...

* departure angle

this last one has nothing to do with nothing...
so just call it an extree... ;)

Also, how does the spare tire fit on when that fuel can holder is on there?

^^this?

it doesn't...

the combo of both hanging off the back of the trailer, on that single spare tire mount, would be, simply put... less then smart

I additionally have a spare tire mount at the front...
the spare goes there when the fuel cans/carrier are being utilized at the rear.

If the fuel cans/carrier is not needed... then the spare will ride out back to compensate for the increased tongue weight, from extending the tongue length and utilizing the Max coupler system.

the spare, mounted in the front, also becomes a bumper (stop) when backing into a 90* plus angle. So that keeps the trailer from getting into the side of my junk. Especially helpful off the road on uneven terrain.

I'm guessing U haven't looked thru the entire build up...
'cause if U had... it's likely U would have a better understanding on what intentions I might have.

TacoDell

sum mo' mock-up pictars... just for da' entertainment of those whom don't like reading... :dunno: LoL

* btw... These fuel cans are currently filled with fuel.

I'm feeling confident that the STM will bare 'da MFC/carrier weight with little issue...
and the trailer's (F-R) balance, at this point (tub empty/ST front/MFC rear)... is damn near a perfect harmony. :)

TacoDell

Here's some views on how that went...

used a piece of 3/16" for the plate work...
I also swapped out the lug mounting nuts (seen here) for locking style lug nuts...
got 4 included in 'da purchase of these...
so... I put one front to secure the spare tire as well.

before 'da weld work...

still have to finish up the chains that will be securing the fuel cans in the carrier... as well as throwing some paint at 'er...

and then I can call it done. ;)

How she's sittin' for 'da moment...
obviously went with the high mount design...
and I'm good with that decision... :)

Just a thought on your chains to retain the cans. If you are using chain so you can lock them-proceed. If not, when I made a similar style rack for two water cans; I used a ratchet strap. That way I could get them tighter if empty or full, and so I could use the space for something else if the cans were left at home. I.E. bundles of firewood or something. Just another thought for you to consider. I welded a chain link on the 45* flatbar to hook the straps to.

TacoDell
03-19-2011, 10:54 AM
yep... the chains will be what secures the cans...
will be 1/2" link and I'll likely look to sleeve the chain with a nylon strap/tubing to keep er quiet and offer less abrasion to the cans.

I don't like the ratchet strap idea much... simply 'cause that makes it too easy for the cans to come into the hands of a new owner :shaking:

hopefully I will get the chains secured good enough to minimize any movement of the cans in the carrier...

Besides... the swell of the can should help in 'dat ;)

I thank U for your input tho'... regardless of my intentions. :)

completed the Scepter MFC carrier...

was late in the evening as I wrapped 'er up, so artificial light was the call.

I farked up a Lil' bit... as the locks were suppose to go to the forward side...
but I got 'er confused in my head after I got side tracked a bit...
and then didn't think again, to realize... 'til is was too late
Never the less... it stays. just need to sleeve 'da chains and it's the end of this chapter. ;)

~ the one thing I haven't finished/decided about 'dis carrier ~

well the two center'd vertical tubes are not welded in yet. ( V this pictar )
wasn't sure if I wanted those there :dunno:
instead... was thinking of making the voids in the center of the carrier,
capable of carrying a few odds and ends... maybe somewhat boxed in with some light sheet... oh I dunno...
I'll think about that for a day or so...

time to get ready for 'da Moab :)

thanks for following along on this stage of my trailer's journey

I ran one of those caster wheels on my tongue jack base plate for a bit. Setting in the sun, the tire and tube would blow out after about 2 months.
Happened twice. Worked good on concrete but not so well on dirt surfaces.
Finally went back to a steel spacer plate on the base.

TacoDell
03-23-2011, 09:41 AM
^ I won't be removing the original landing leg...

the caster wheel/assembly would be added, in addition, and only need be used on certain occasion...
I'd likely remove and store elsewhere when use is not required.

hopefully it might last a Lil' longer then yers did.

if not... I'll just cut 'er off and shit can that

Red was my first choice... and may get swapped to that later when I come across some.

U might also notice... I installed one lock upside down on it's shackle (2nd pic down)

isn't it convenient how conduit fits inside iron pipe? I booty fabbed a TV antenna mount for a friend out of a pipe flange and some conduit welded together since his landlord was adamant about nothing touching the siding.

I guess...

but there is no conduit anything here...

1/2" galv. coated solid steel rod... and that's a nat. gas 90* elbow...
not conduit pot metal.

I wouldn't trust conduit, nor the weak pot metal fittings,
for anything, I'd stick my neck under. :shaking:

understandable conclusion

lid weighs in at just about 100lbs, w/ RTT mounted to it.
