Anyway I have a buddy who is growing sick of the auto is his 91 pickup. SO we are currently planning to swap it out. I have done a search on this but found very little info regarding this specific scenario.
1) what is the best tranny to swap? I know the turbo is the BEST but realistically we are never going to find one at a affordable price.
2) I have access to a 84 5-speed with a T-case for 250 cdn. Can this be easily thrown behind the 3.0 V6....probably not.
3) IS it better to just find a 5-speed that originally came with the V6 and throw that in? I have no idea how strong these tranies are. Am I correct in assumiong they came with the gear driven transfercase? I was under the sumption that the only vehicles that did not have gear drive x-cases were auto tranny vehicles, is this correct?
thanks

The only 5-speed that will mount behind a V6 is an original V6 5-speed tranny, thats a R150F. You'll have to find one of those. And they came with chain driven t/c, but you can get an adapter to mate a 4cyl gear driven t/c behind the R150F. All-Pro sell them HERE (http://www.allprooffroad.com/tcase.html), they're about half way down the page. You'll want a gear t/c if you ever want to put in crawler gear or go dual case. But if those aren't in the future, then just runn the chain t/c, nothing really wrong with it.
Hope that helps a little.
Wait, I was just thinking, both the R150F and R151F(turbo) have the same input shaft and bolt pattern, so I think if you found a R151 tranny, and a R150 bellhousing, you could put the turbo tranny behind the V6 engine, then you wouldn't need any adapter to have a gear t/c, plus it would be 23 spline. That's what you should do.

Thats a serious lack of options. How tough are those trannies? Compared to my 85 tranny?

the r series trannys are among the best trannys for toyotas. you need a r series tranny and a v6 bell housing, you nay have to modify the cross member if you get a turbo tranny. but that would be the best way to go unless your friend doesn't lock in the hubs very much

R151 was in 86+87 turbos, R150 was in the 3.0 trucks and runner between 88 and 95. Although I think they still put it behind the 3.4 to this day. Marlin has a chart on his site, check into it.

From what I understand from info on this BBS you can use either the R150F V6 5-speed OR the R151 ('86-87) 4cyl turbo 5-speed. To use the R151 you will need the bell housing from the R150F. Additional parts are:
- One 5 speed flywheel
- Clutch bearing hub
- Master/slave cyl
- Hydraulic lines
- Pedal Assembly- I believe this just bolts in. Am I wrong?
- Two approx. 1.5 inch 17 mm bolts
- One 5-speed t-case crossmember
- One 4 inch piece of wire with spade connector at each end. (I don't remember what for!)
- I've also been told that you can leave the computer from the auto tranny in there. Something about it having a bit more power as it was programmed to account for power loss from the auto.
HTH!:flipoff2: I plan on doing this also after I get the heads swapped out on my '88. Then it's time to gather the shiznit for my SAS. WOOO HOOOO!
