We have an '81 K-5 that has a stock 350 w/ q-jet. I was thinking about putting a TBI set up on it. I need to know if anyone here has the wiring diagram of the computer in a TBI set up. I plan on making the harness and buying the adapter from 4-barrel to throttle body. Any info or good links would help.

I have wiring diagrams for the 1989 and 1991 TBI installations in a Chevy Van. I don't have my scanner running right now, but may get them scanned at work one day this week.

I got some good information at the public library on wiring harnesses and diagrams, and was lucky enough to borrow the Mitchell manuals from a friend to make the copies. IMO, the $100 to purchase the manual (or $20 to grease a mechanics palm) is well worth the expense.

I just cleaned up the factory harness on Sat - it ws easier than I thought it would be!

sweet, thanks for the info, i think those will help a whole lot, since i'm goin to try to use chevy tbi on the amc and make my own harness

another question, does anyone know if amc sensors have same resistances and what not that chevy ones have, like temp, oil, that stuff?

Also look around the DIY_EFI Web Site DIY-EFI GM ECM (http://www.diy-efi.org/gmecm/) take a look at the FAQ's which will help in locating the harness connectors, etc.

Also The Custom EFIs (http://www.customefis.com/) had a good source of info, but now is CHARGING for access to the DIY stuff. :(

Sensors: do not assume the AMC and Chevy at the same. Most of the stuff can be checked pretty easily (i.e. measure resistance of a water temp sender while heating it up, etc). AMC may have used FORD sensors (lots of Ford electricals were in my old Jeep Wagoneer).

I was looking on Motorola's web site for Application Note AN1791. Had fun writing that one, as it was to help out some of the formula SAE teams. Dang, not able to find a copy of it, but did explain some of the sensors... yes, we even used a pan of hot water to calibrate a ford sensor. :D

Water temp, air temp, throttle position are most critical. You'll need the GM MAP as they used analog signals, Ford used frequency. Best to use the GM stuff... less headache, unless you really want to get into the cal files and modify hardware. :D

thanks for the tip Tom, but i wasn't goin to assume they were the same, just wondering, and i'll probably use the chevy stuff, i work at an auto parts store, so all those sensors and stuff for me are CHEAP

Although i may have to have some sort of adapaters to put some of that stuff in, it'll be fun settin it up

dug this up from the grave..

Instead of making a new post I thought I'd try this first.

I ha e read pages and have looked at some wiring diagrams off the IH8MUD site.

I would like to find a diagram that basically says...."hold harness here, cut all XXX wires leave XXX wires and plug harness back in"

I have a 90 chevy van that runs right now and I am getting ready to pull motor and mark all connections but I am hearing that the computer needs alot of feedback or it won't run right.

how many sensors/wires do I need to keep besides:
fuel pump
map
o2
injectors
tps
massair
???

what else?

oh yeah 700r4 getting changed to th400
