: Steering Box Upgrade
Guns_and_Roses 03-06-2011, 03:26 PM You may have seen this on another forum but....
My Steering box took a crap on my 89 3.0 so i went to the junkyard and got this one off a 1995.

Here is my old one.

The new one all painted up and ready to go.

It all worked out really good and for under $50.
4D55 Performance Inc 03-06-2011, 04:39 PM So was this a direct bolt on?
Guns_and_Roses 03-06-2011, 07:46 PM the top mounting holes on the steering box just need to be widened a bit plus adding two flat washers.
otherwise direct bolt-on.
rxinhed 03-06-2011, 08:43 PM Kris, so the difference in ratio is going to be what?
sneakyninja 03-06-2011, 09:41 PM Cool, It´s good to see more people doing this. One thing we´ve noticed is the pitman arm is at a different angle but it hasn´t been a problem yet.
This is an awesome upgrade if you have 35¨+ size tires, Makes a huge difference. You can do the same thing on a Gen 2 by using a gen 1 pump but i wouldn´t do this mod with small tires, It could get scary.

What ratio are you curious about? steering box ratio? i did not know that the steering box had a ratio?

i noticed that also but the shaft the pitman attaches too is a little longer to compensate just a bit.
The geometry of the front end is barely changed except for stronger box and arm.

The Gen 2 boxes have a lower gear ratio, so if you have sub 35" tires be prepared for scary sensitive steering. Even with 35's it's touchy but it's easy to get used to.
Guns_and_Roses 03-07-2011, 08:22 PM you know...the old box was very sloppy. no adjustment helped at all.
so when i put in this box i noticed how sensitive it was ( i have 33's and will be going up to 35's soon ).
But i love it. It feels awesome compared to the old one.
funny to think it has a lower ratio....why did they do that? was it because it was a four door?
sneakyninja 03-07-2011, 10:56 PM they lowered the ratio to run a lower pressure pump, possibly for better MPGs.
4D55 Performance Inc 03-07-2011, 11:27 PM I wonder if I should upgrade my pickup to this steering box. Last year I put on a newly rebuilt steering box, but the steering seems really loose. I have replaced just about every thing on the front end and the only other thing I can possibly think of that would cause my loose steering would be a bad u-joint between the steering wheel and the steering gear box.
nissancam 04-19-2011, 02:25 PM Hey guys first question is are there any other good mightymax 4x4 forums? I am taking a 94 mighty max 2wd 4cyl and solid axle swapping a chevy dana 44 with ford outers and a 9 inch rear and divorce mounting a toyota t case and pirates mitshibishi forums arent the greatest for good hard core tech. Also about this specific topic mine had non powered steering im am guessing the pump and bracket should be a direct bolt in? Thanks
rxinhed 04-19-2011, 10:33 PM Swap shouldn't be too hard. Baldy has a D50/MM with Ford D44, Chevy 350 and other upgrades
nissancam 05-23-2011, 09:38 AM Does anyone know if there are any pitman arms that will fit on this box but without the tierod end? I am using all heims on my steering and i am trying to get around building a custom pitman arm.
sneakyninja 05-23-2011, 11:39 AM For your SAS change steering gear boxes, This is the best place for tech when it comes to SAS's. If you want more engine tech and service manuals go to 4x4wire.com
The power steering pump will bolt on with the correct bracket, I just fabbed my own to use the montero pump. If you are doing an SAS i'm sure you can fab up a bracket for your power steering. Look forward to seeing your build.

I just popped the ball out of the end of the pitman arm, drilled a 1" hole and used a sleeve with a 3/4 bolt, when I had heims. Now I run GM 1 ton TRE's with a Ballistic weld in tapered insert.
nissancam 05-23-2011, 10:18 PM Raole Duke what axle did you use for your SAS? I am using a GM Dana 44 and it seems that the pitman arm needs to be about a half inch longer to use the full steering of the axle, this is just a rough measurement since I havent nailed down my box placement or my steering links. My truck was originally non power stering and I went with the second gen box because I wanted to keep as much of the truck Mitsubishi and also its tapable for hydo assist.

Nissancam, you may also want to send Baldy110 a private message. I think he did a SAS using a GM dana 44 and he is in you neck of the woods.

I have a Ford 44, and had the same problem, not getting full lock to lock. Instead of making the pitman arm longer, I made the other side shorter by using the hole in my Ballistic high steer arm that is closer to the ball joint. I also had my steering gear ported/tapped by PSC, and use their XJ pump/8"ram. And, so far, I love this setup.
nissancam 05-26-2011, 01:00 PM Yeah your rig is badass when i start having kids (and more money) i am going to build a montero. But for now i am broke and PSC is way out of my budget i have been collecting parts forever and just wanna wheel this thing. I have parts mike arm and they only have one hole as i am doing cross over not hysteer It will pretty much just be a trail truck so for now i think i will just cut the splined part of the stock arm and weld on a new 1 inch plate to it and see how it goes. When i go hydro assist i might reconsider
