Not yet, our second baby (in my left arm!) came two weeks early. (Oct. 21st!) So time has kind of frozen! I will make a point to give it a shot this week. I will grab some photos, just no one laugh at my trashed garage!!

Thanks guys, he is doing great and eating like a mad man. Here is a photo of him six hours old and already under his first Landcruiser.  Got’a start’em off right in life! Now my Cruisers have two allies in the house. (My 2yr old boy thinks my 40 is his.)

Rusty,

Ok so it took some time to get a chance to do this, but here we go. Compound bend on a JD-2 model 4 bender. I tried to get the two bends as close together as possible on different planes. Due to the travel of the follower die, you have to keep the pre bent part off the back side of the bender. Here are three shots of testing this out. I used 3.5' of 1.5" .120 wall on my 5.5" radius die. The closest I could get the two bends is just a bit less than the lead in on this particular die set. (1.9375") The spacing was something like 1.750”. I would guess this will be the case with any die set. Lead in on die set = how tight you can get compound bends.

1st. BTW: been using Way Lube to oil the tube as the pressure die contacts it for the bend. It has been working great, all but the sulfur smell!

3rd done. Not the tightest, anything tighter and it would be best just to chop and weld. I will most likely do this on my tube fenders to keep the front down turn at a minimum.

Now what to use this chunk of tube on? I am sure I will find something for it, or part of it.

Hope this helps, did you end up getting a JD-4?

Thanks for getting back to me on the subject. I am still punching out the jobs using the model 2. I think I may just keep what I have and possibly add the hydro setup to it.
If you noticed the tube fenders that I made for Nolen, you will see how close the model 2 can get the compound bends. I think it is about the same as what you are getting with the model 4
If you dont mind me asking, how much was your hydro setup?

Rusty,

Yes I saw the photos Nolen put up. You did a great job! The material is standing by for me to start in on mine. At this point I am just waiting for the 1.5” 6.5” radius die set to show up. (Have a 1.5” 5.5” set but it will not work for 0.065 wall, I don’t want to end up with 150lb fenders!)

The basic set up cost something like $2300 delivered. (FL to OR, is a bit of a ways and the sucker weighs over 200lbs) I am using the air over oil pump rather than the electronic pump. ($400-500 savings) I have since tried out an electric pump, and went back to the air unit. To me I just have more control with the air over oil. Nothing is worse than cranking out that last bend of 5 and over shooting the bend. Doink there went a half hours worth of work! (ok I guess it would be worse if one did all the bends by hand, so I guess I should not complain to much)

At this point I just keep buying die sets as I need them, darn things add up as I am sure you know with your bender. (The set I am waiting for cost $240) But as we all tell ourselves all tools are an investment, right!

I have seen a few home brew conversions to make a non hydro bender in to a hydro unit. Before buying mine I talked with someone who did this, but they said end the end they where only a few $$ shy of just buying a complete hydro out of the box. (But they bought all new hydro parts, it would be a different story if you can just tare a fork lift apart!) One nice thing though is all the die sets you have will still work for you.

72rockcruiser, Thanks, I was referring to how messy and cluttered the sucker was/is. I mean dang Medusa posts up photos, and his shop looks like it belongs on one of the NASCAR shows! (In 4x4 terms) The big toys you can not see in the photo…!;) (For now, don’t think I am keeping my mill and lathe, just don’t have the room for it and work on the truck. I mean heck that is the whole point of all this junk afterall.)

Did you buy the hydraulic setup from JD2 ? If I remember right, I priced the enerpak w/manual hand pump through them and it was approx $700. I think that is a bit high for a porta power w/hand pump, but I havent priced around either.

Yes bought the whole set up right from them. (all but the cart/stand thing, homey built tat) The ram alone is one of the big ticket parts, I think that was $400-600 alone. The air over oil was $400; the bender frame assembly was $1100? I will make a point to look at the receipt and give you real numbers. I bought the 2" and the 1.5" die sets at the same time as well. I will let you know.

It is one of those purchases you just look at the tool/part and try to forget the price tag.:( :D

Helocat congrats on the newborn!

Rustyb, I know with my JD2 model 3, that I can get fairly close compound bends. I just have to feed the tube in from the front of the bender, as long as the die strap grabs on you can start a new bend. The area from the strap to the start of the bend on the die and shoe is maybe a couple inches. Of course how close you can get it will depend on the first bend. The larger the bend the farther away you have to start the next bend.

Attached is a pic from my ex-cruiser with a compound bend, Its on the same plane, but you could rotate to achieve on a different plane. Its hard to see but the cross bar bends into the center with 1 center bend and two outer bends the other direction. I think this is kinda what your after.

I am able to get my bends on separate planes approx 2- 2.5'' apart with the 2'' die. I can get a bit closer with the 1.5'' die by using the strap for the 2'' die. It does tend to distort the strap a little, but a hammer fixxes that. If you have ever noticed the rear hoop on Nolens rig,the bends are about as close as I can achieve with the 2'' die. They are bends of 90* and 35*on planes at a 90* difference.
