Wondering who is running this, a guy is selling the 3spd tranny w/ the chev small block bellhousing attached
Curious if you have to rev the shit out of it to get it to speed w/ only 3 gears

There is a guy in town who's got a similar setup, in fact behind a 440  In fact, he's looking for a 4 speed mostly for drivability.
The third gear on the 3 speed is the same as 4th on 4 speeds at 1:1, so highway cruising won't make a difference. The difference on the 3 spd is no synchro for the first gear so you can't really down shift unless you learn how to drive like they used to before the days of synchoed trannys. Plus the first gear on the 3 speed is way higher so you lose some offroad ability unless you compensate for it in your axles or t-case. But some people actually swear by the 3 speed because reverse is right above 1st, good for getting unstuck. For a road vehicle it would probably be fine.

As dieselcruiserhead stated, street driving won't really be any different than a 4 speed since they have the same top ratio's. The four speed does have a little lower first as well as a little less space between gears but the three speed is a very durable transmission. when companies started making 350 conversion kits for FJ40's, the three speed was the only tranny available. Alot of these original conversions are still on the road. It is rare to hear of a three speed tranny going bad other than user error. (water in tranny...etc)
