i can go from here to there on one tank of fuel. but if i go far away i need to stop for fuel. :flipoff2: who cares what kinda milage ya get when ya 700 ft lbs of torque and 325 hp. it will pull my trailer and rig over I80 donner pass at 85 mpg and still gaining when i get to the top.

96 2500 4x4, nv4500, 3:55's, CTD with a #5 plate, opened up exhaust, tweaked pump and turbo. Somewhere in the 300hp/900ft/lb zone, gets 15-20 loaded. (depends on how much of a hurry I'm in)

BTW, if you tow with a nv4500 and a ctd, make sure to stay out of 5th unless your turnin' at least 1900. Damn harmonics will beat the bearings out of the tranny.

I have a '93 Dodge cummins 4x4 auto club cab. The towing mileage really depends on the load. Mine varies from anywhere from 16 to 20 mpg. I got 20 almost 21 mpg towing my ski boat (about 2500 lbs and not a lot of wind resistance) back from southern Oregon at about 70 mph. The 16 mpg was from towing my dad's boat back from Long Beach, CA, that cruiser was about 9500 to 10000 lbs and it dwarfed the truck (so lots of wind resistance). It's funny though I had a few boats (about 6000lbs)that weighed significantly less than my dad's boat got the same 16 mpg but those boats were also 10 ft on the trailer.

I used to own a '95 F350 PSD 4x4 CC it got 18 mpg empty and 13 mpg loaded. I sold it and bought a '99 F350 PSD 4x4 CC and it would get 12-13 mpg loaded or unloaded  . Just for reference now I have a '02 Excursion 4x4 V10 Limited w/ 4.30 gears and it gets 12-13 mpg empty and around 10 mpg loaded.

I just picked it up 9 days ago and have logged 2800 miles already, but I love it. accelerating up a 7% 6 mile incline in 6th gear pulling the TJ is amazing.
Tons of room, rides like a caddy, seems like DC has thought of almost everything in this truck, 3 power outlets within an arms reach, storage everywhere, and damn is that thing quiet compared to every other diesel I have heard yet.
Only complaint so far is I wish they'd have used a size bigger tires to lower the RPMs a little on the highway, I'm now very happy I didn't go with the 4.10s

01 2500 Dodge 4x4 LB CTD Automatic with 73K
Getting a precise 8-11 mpg towing a 28ft goose with a couple of jeeps and gear (approx. 12-13k lbs.) Daily non-towing in the metroplex 40-50 miles of rush hour daily I average between 16-16.5 mpg. All stock... no mods.

I'm a dork... I keep a spreadsheet with every fillup recorded... fuel used, elapsed engine time, trailer miles, my pulse at the time of fillup!!! So... it's pretty precise. That being said, most people either, can't calculate mgp worth a damn or are completely full of it. Have a wheelin' buddy with similar setup as mine in 2WD and a 5spd gets very similar mileage.

thump93yj

btw... really depends on the road quality... damn Oklahoma highways knock my mileage down at least 2 mpg. Bumpy!!! Got better mileage climbing into Farmington last spring than I-40 through OK.

I don't keep a spreadsheet, but do keep track of every drop of fuel since I got the truck. There's a tablet and calculator in the truck. My mileage figures are real world, and I'm not babying it either. Gotta check that max boost often and smoke the tailgaters ya know...:flipoff2: Your mileage is lower than most report from a CTD. May be because you're still stock, and also I hear the 24 valves don't go as far per gallon. Mine goes farther on fuel now than it did stock.:D Some of these PSD mileage figures are hard to believe tho...

I hear ya postal... psd bragadocia... whatever! We borrowed one a couple of years ago to go to Moab... about 2000 miles round trip. It got about the same as mine... maybe a half mile per gallon better, but I was pullin' a lowboy 28ft and the psd was a 2wd. Pulled about the same as mine... a little less front end torque but higher end was better. I typically haul at 70mph.

I remember back when I was pulling single rig trailers with 360 motors... all the diesel folks I talked to swore they were gettin' "18-20mpg loaded or empty" *spit-ding* BS:smokin:

I just slapped a K&N in the box... so we'll see if that improves anything. The turbo spools up better, but haven't run it enough to get a good feel for the mpg effect. BTW, that truck computer is always off from what the pump fillup/mileage calc shows on mine.

I'm not complaining about what I got... it's WAY better than gas trucks. But folks sure do have extremely different versions of mpg on all the forums I've read... 8 to 20+??? sure....

I have 02 CTD 3500 4x4 24V, auto and 3.55's. With 3k miles on it.
I get
16 - 16.5 empty highway
11-12 in town
11.5 with my 3500LB camper
10 with my 3500LB camper and 2700LB boat.

Thats keeping up with traffic, it would probably be better if I wasn't always in a hurry ;) . I could see getting 18-20 with a 2WD diesel, 55 MPH on the flats empty. No way 18-20 loaded. I don't think there is much difference in MPG or power between the PSD and CTD. My milage seems consistant with PSD's hauling simular loads.

There are three of us who go on Jeepin trips pretty regularly. One has a '95 PSD, 5 spd. crew cab. One has a Chevy crew cab with a carbed 468 big block and 5 spd. I have my '93 Dodge Cummins 5 spd.

We're all towing goosenecks, each with similar loads - a truck camper, jeep, dirt bikes, quads, parts, tools, spares, generators, etc.

We filled up and went about 215 miles, then stopped for fuel because the Chevy was down to the fumes in his two 20 gal. tanks. The PSD took 28 gallons to fill up, the Cummins took 18. This works out to roughly 6, 8 and 12 mpg. Soooo, this is why I find some of these PSD mileage figures hard to believe.

Both diesels were stock at the time. This was my first long trip with my Cummins, and I wanted to do one stock trip for comparison's sake before I started turning up the power. My 12 mpg towing has improved to 13 since.

Love my CTD!

I just filled mine up (see sig, 4x4), 19.7; mostly city driving, several hours worth of putting around looking at houses, plus a ski trip, cruising pretty good up the passes. Last tank was just over 20, normal is 18-19.

Yeah I noticed that as well when they went to low sulphur diesel. When I am out on a road trip I always take some Standyne diesel fuel conditioner and it seems to make difference in mileage of about 2 mpg. In a pinch I use two stroke oil when I don't have the fuel conditioner. It seems to work pretty good as well.
