Sounds like a early switch on the later amber turn signal setup or vice versa. check for the correct switch. Same plug but different circuits for the red turnsignal and amber turn signal...

Wasn't clear if the brake lights work or not. If tail lights are on, but go out when the brake lights are applied... with NO LIGHTS... yes, bad ground.

Clean the pig tail leads that connect to the frame. They provide the ground connection. Usually remove the screw or bolt, clean up the spot on the frame with emery paper. Ditto for the wiring harness connection. Smear a little antisieze over the connection points, bolt back together.

What year?

I have a 1/71 and was having random brake light problems. It was the turn signal switch. On my year the turn signal/lights/brake circut went through this swtich.

HTH,

Where is the turn signal light located?
