: I need info on 258 cranks , strokes etc
cobo9 09-25-2001, 03:42 PM I have a 77 block with bad bearings and the crank is fouled. I could get it machined but i have a donor crank. Not sure of the year though. the dodnor crank has fewer balancing lobes, and is obviouly lighter. they lined up and measured out ok but is the stroke different? Any ideas?
JEEPRZ 09-25-2001, 04:45 PM The cranks were lightened in the 80s, but it will work fine. Also, the 87 and later cranks had a slightly differant snout length, so compare that as well
WillyPete 09-25-2001, 05:20 PM FAWKIN NEWBIE QUESTION!!!!
of course the stroke is the same <IMG SRC="smilies/thefinger.gif" border="0">
3.75x3.9 (or in your case, 3.78x3.9) <IMG SRC="smilies/wink.gif" border="0">
cobo9 09-25-2001, 06:30 PM ok pete that isn't a newbie question. you piece of crap who the heck do you think you are! oh let me guess one of these know it all pirate guys who never go wheelin tell everybody it's a dana 60 front or nothin! sorry i'm a student in highschool who built my jeep from the ground up! that's right you jerk. besides i had my auto teacher ask me to find out. and my neighbor told me to to do so aswell and they build motors for a hobby but youre a typical wannabe pirate asshole!! besides newbie question? do you surf the questions and comment or ask. and i have been here longer than you pal. asked more questions. a newbie question would be how do i fit 35's on a stock jeep. <IMG SRC="smilies/flipoff.gif" border="0"> <IMG SRC="smilies/flipoff.gif" border="0"> <IMG SRC="smilies/flipoff.gif" border="0"> <IMG SRC="smilies/flipoff.gif" border="0"> <IMG SRC="smilies/flipoff.gif" border="0"> <IMG SRC="smilies/flipoff.gif" border="0"> <IMG SRC="smilies/flipoff.gif" border="0">

CJ-Jeeper 09-25-2001, 07:30 PM I don't think he's a Pirate since he's from Tennessee & check out his rig. Is that your Mommy's willypete?
If you don't know what the crank is from, it could be out of a 232c.i. Don't know if the stroke would be the same in that case.
cobo9 09-25-2001, 10:47 PM it's definitely a 258 but since i knew the strokes should be the same on a 258 and a 258 you never know. Amc's 2.46 liter was alled a 2.5 so maybe there a a few different strokes for the 258's? the good news is that the cranks are the same and match. i guess i'll see. i found a page today that said all 258's 1971-1990 have a 3.75x3.90 bore/stroke so ig uess that answered my question

Rokmycj 09-26-2001, 08:05 AM The only difference with the lighter crank is that your motor will stall more often on the trail. There is an article about the diferent cranks of the 258. It was posted here a while back. They measured all of the different cranks when they were building a 4.5 liter stroker motor. I can't find the link but if you search the net you will find it. I have seen it quite a few times. Basically, it is like putting a heavier flywheel on the motor. The extra weight of the crank tends to keep the motor alive at super low RPM's. Just my .02 of useless trivia.
Oh and willypete. I love the stock grand wagoneer, especially the wood paneling. Can you pick up my groceries at the store for me. <IMG SRC="smilies/thefinger.gif" border="0"> <IMG SRC="smilies/thefinger.gif" border="0"> <IMG SRC="smilies/thefinger.gif" border="0"> <IMG SRC="smilies/thefinger.gif" border="0"> <IMG SRC="smilies/biggrin.gif" border="0"> <IMG SRC="smilies/biggrin.gif" border="0">

WillyPete 09-27-2001, 12:20 AM there is a lesson to be learned here, grasshopper.
the lotus blossom who posts in anger wilts and dies in the first frost of winter, but the bamboo stalk who bends with the winds of autumn posts longer.
when you can take this spanner from my hand in one try, you have attained mastery...
