i'm doing a tranny swap fm peugeot to NV3550. will have the t-case apart to put in a 23 spline input gear. what would be the best way to determine if the chain should be replaced? i'm sure they stretch.

thanks
steve

If you have a TON of miles on it, it could need replacing, but chances are, it's fine. If it DID need it, you'd be able to tell by some slop between the front and rear drivelines ("thunk" when going from reverse to forward in 4wd) and if it gets really bad, the chain will actually 'skip' teeth on the drive sprocket (VERY noticable).

That said, if the 231 worked fine when you removed it, I wouldn't worry about stretching.

thanks jake...........

i don't get any thunk from forward to reverse in4WD. if i stall out on an obstacle, i do get some slop in the drivetrain- don't know where it is originating though- tranny,t-case,drivelines,detroits.........

i will see what the chain looks like when i split the case. i didn't see any prob with it when i did my SYE. i know with chains on my motorcycles, i would just grab it at the rear of the rear sprocket and see how much it would pull away from the teeth- you could tell easy that way if it was trashed.

I love that pic.. :flipoff2:

The m/c chain test works OK on the t/case.. best bet is if you can find a friendly tranny shop that has chains in stock, and compare the length. They will stretch a LOT.

I had no tech since I didn't mess with the 231 at all. Just loved the pic, sorry.
