: Rear axle 404 help. PLEASE
Xcrawler 03-25-2011, 05:08 PM OK i have been looking for the last two weeks on how to rebuild a rear mog 404. I know where to get parts but i don't want to jump into it with out some step by step, pics or something.
This is the problem: When i drive my jeep on the road it has this crazy vibration. At first i thought it was the rear drive shaft. So i put the rear up on jacks. with the jeep in neutral i rolled the tires with my hand forward the back feet smooth. I did notice how ever that there is so much back lash in the axle. About 1/4 inch. Now i don't know if that's good or bad but the front dosen't have that.
Then i put the jeep in gear and BOOM you can feel and hear something just not right on the portals. Now i could be wrong and it could be from the center section but i don't know. So i was thinking of working my way in. when Im in low range i don't get a vibration and everything feels fine. Just when i drive on the street. I also don't know where to put the oil in the hub. Could that be it? Help please pics anything, or if someone has had this problem let me know.
There is a company in Denver that rebuilds unimogs but no one answers the phone.

Portal boxes come off pretty easy on rear diffs.
Exploded view.

Start by removing portal box and axle from cast ext housing.
Greg has a couple good pics @ the end of this page.

If you find you need to get into 3rd member.
Wire up locker lever so it is in the locked position,
otherwise locker collar will fall off into case, possibly
making 3rd member removal impossible (if locker collar
jams up against 3rd member and inside of case).

Need to rotate 3rd 90 degrees to get it out.

nice pics that ox posted.
as far as oiling the boxes, on the back (flat side) there are 3 'fill plugs'. they take a 17mm wrench.
the lowest is for draining.
the middle is for the correct lube level.
the top is for filling.
(kind of like the 3 bears story)
it takes a bit of looking to see that one IS actually a bit higher of the 2
(seemingly) side by side.
I use good old 80w-90 in mine.
"BUT" I doubt being low on lube will cause your vibrations.
I would pull a box off from the backing plate so that you do not need to mess
with removing the hub, and take a look inside. maybe a chipped tooth?
let us know what you find.
Xcrawler 03-31-2011, 06:43 PM So i found that a weight on the drive shaft was all jacked up. So that was the cause of the viberation. I'm also going to ajust the angel a little. Thank you for the help. I also put oil in all the portal boxs. They had nothing in them.

I carry a 17mm wrench in my seat...to check the fluid level often and make sure the bolts that hold the box on are tight (mine get loose often). To easy to check it vs. to ignore it. I also cary a couple of extra quarts of oil.
Didnt you have a build thread going? I was following it and then it was gone?

YA I'm going to build a sliding drawer kind of like a rat pack weather box. That way i can keep everything nice and neat in the jeep and then build a frame for the cooler on top.
I had a build thread about a year ago but i had to leave town for work and put the jeep in storage. Got back in July and took the jeep out to Penrose CO. It lasted 15min's then the lower front fame link mounts bent all to hell. rolled the axle snapped the front drive shaft and cracked all the welds in the rear frame 4-link that i had a shop here in town build when i had my dana 60's put in.
After that i had the same shop convince me to try and fix it but in sat in the back of there shop for 6 months. I finally said enough is enough and i'm renting a shop with my buddy, welderrwc72 on here ( he has a 93 dodge in rocks and 49 http://www.pirate4x4.com/forum/showthread.php?t=849008&page=3 ) and fixed the jeep my self. The way i wanted it. And cause no one knows anything about mog's around me i rebuilt the front frame mount out of 2" sch 80 cause i have an atlas 4 speed with 11:1. I have some pics ill put up. Plus i'm a rig welder and i trust my welds more then anyones.
WIX do you ever drive your jeep on the street? Is it smooth? How fast do you go?

The new hotness, Lets see the jeep bend this.

Everything is welded with 6010 then 7018 for a cap. No mig on the mount. Everything is 1/4" plate and 2" sch 80 wall. No bends cut and rewelded. It took four of us to put the skid plate back up. Its really heavy.
So with the ax-15 tranny the atlas 4 speed t-case and the axle the final crawl ratio is 321.1. So i don't think it well bend this time.
nice.
it took me 3 times to get a crossmember that would last under mine.
the torque extension the mogs provide is unreal, not like on common D60 axled rigs.

No I its never been on pavement. No speedo either so couldnt tell ya. On dirt roads im guessing 45-50ish?? and yes its actually pretty smooth, Im thinkin if I could get faster it would be alot smoother :D

Nice. what about body roll and steering? Dont you use full hydro? If so how is the wheel?
nice.

Same here. I ripped off the front 3 link truss once, broke off 3/8 plate tabs (now 1/2 inch) on upper link truss, cracked frame, shredded upper link frame mount, etc.....
Even after beefing the crap out of everything I still somewhat "baby" it since I don't think a 3 link, mogs, and a 6000 lb rig can exist no matter what you do (assuming you want to be able to hammer it when needed).
Mabe Im lucky here? I have zero problems with my link setup. I take that back I riped my panhard bar off but that was due to poor design. My brackets are all 3/16" except my rear truss is 1/4". I guess I got lucky with the placement of the brackets, link separation etc...?? Hope I just didnt jinx myself :p
Xcrawler 04-06-2011, 06:28 PM Ya it never really sets in how much leverage mogs have over the stander dana 60. Just think if you had a monster motor. Shit that thing would be nuts. My buddy put it the best way," the axles are so beefy that the whole jeep is the weak link now." lol
