Thank you:). By the way, the front bumper is getting repainted body color (or red if I put it on my black TJ). I don't like the color Mike painted it for me. The design, however, I'm stickin' with;).

By the way, I thought all of you were "hardcore"? I've never seen so many people concerned with looks, rather than function haha. My bumper cost me less than it would cost to buy a Warn winch mount and cheapo 2x5 rect. tubing bumper, plus it affords me some radiator protection in the event of a rollover and frontal protection against deer collisions, which are common in my area. These are worth the extra 50 lbs IMHO. The only criticism I've heard from you is about how it looks - at least address its functional shortcomings! What a bunch of posers:flipoff2: :flipoff2: bwahahahaha

Well, lets talk about function.
A grill hoop could solve almost all the problems you mentioned, but the deer, well I bet that a deer would take out just about any bumper.

THOSE TIRES ARE HUGE!!!
You should start a thread that says "48's on a dana 30???"

You'll have to keep us posted on how the hell you figure out how to run those on a TJ!

BTW GO4LO, we're hardcore with good taste. :flipoff2:

But I have to agree with some of these other guys, that thing is fugly:flipoff2:

Well, it's not been tested on a deer yet:). The triangular vertical supports are about 3.6 times as strong as the vertical tubes in a frontal impact, and they are braced at the bottom right by the frame. I couldn't design it any stronger than I did - but you're right, at high speed, a deer will take out just about anything.
I know exactly how I'm going to run the tires - steering Rockwells F&R, full hydro from Station/JOHNS351C, custom longarm I designed, and airbags. And a lot of trimming. I may even drop a flatbed on the back of it:). Thanks for the intelligent post ;).
Oh, and maybe I'll paint my big TJ pink with purple flowers and paint "POR" across the hood just for y'all;).

That's cool - I understand what you're saying. I just didn't consider 126 lbs (versus 75 or so for rect. 2x5 cheapo bumper and winch mount) that big of a compromise in weight. Thanks.

Fist off the bumper is gay, we think its ugly and also believe form fallows function... Basicly way to much crap that doesnt do the job as well as a simpler design (unless it is indeed a cattle guard) OK now thats out of my system....

I wouldnt bother with a flat bed in the rear because to use those tires well your going to need to stretch the wheelbase ALOT otherwise it will want to flop over backwards whenevre you look at a steep climb. Other then that keep us posted

GO 4LO
11-21-2002, 08:15 PM
The tires are 16.00R20 - they measure 52" tall, 16" wide sitting there - not on rims, not on vehicle. They will be going on 20x10 beadlocks. The wheelbase will be stretched.

Thanks for the comments. I'm not sure I understand the correlation between stretching the wheelbase and not using a flatbed, though? Could you explain this for me? My purpose in consdiering the flatbed is two-fold - first, I can get some more shock-mounting room in back (never carry passengers in the rear anyway, and getting rid of the tub will open up a lot of room). Second, I can gain lots more tire clearance (more than with just hacked fenders), which will translate to less lift and a lower CG, which is already gonna be way too high due to the tires LOL:). The rear axle is going to be pushed back about 12" from its stock position, and the front axle will be moved about 12" forward. Any ideas would be greatly appreciated. Thanks.

They are pretty cheap.

Johns351C who is on the board here sells them for $150 each in 95%+ condition. I think he sells the 100% tires for $200.

I have some 52" XL's from John that I am very happy with. I can't wait to run them.

You know Sam with the blue Land Rover hybrid right? He knows where you can get some of these tires in Oz.

how much wheelbase do you plan on having? i would make that thing 110 or better if i was doing it. also i'd stretch it the same amount on both ends, not just the front. especially if your gonna flatbed it. just my.02 :D

I was gonna buid a bumper like that, only it would have a fold down grill on the front, and I would use all that extra tube for extra capacity propane storage, maybe some horizontal 8 inch spikes too, this way, when I do hit that deer, I just flick my Bic, and BBQ!!

You're right. My '97 is going to be very heavy overall. It'll be running a light 302 for the engine, so that hopefully, all the weight I add (Rockwells, tires, ...) will keep the COG low. There's a couple other surprises in store for it, but everyone will just have to wait until I post the finished pics before they get to make fun of those. They'll be even more :rainbow: than my bumper;).
