A friend of mine is trying to lean out a 4 bbl edelbrok 550 cfm and we are looking for a quick fix. smells really rich and wondering if we can adjust it and not have to tear into the engine. any help would be great. LOWFLYER

well from what I know you can lean out an engine by the 2 screws on the front by the base (called mixture screws) in for lean out for rich ,but if you go to far you will lose a ton o power.
also can chose to re jet carb to lean out, or advance timing a couple of degrees to lean out motor. but be careful not to over do it because lean is running hot and to hot is bad for the valves. good luck

THE MIXTURE SCREWS ONLY HELP AT IDLE......PAST THAT IT COMES OFF THE IDLE CIRCUT........YOU HAVE TO GO INTERNALLY ...THE EDLECRAPS HAVE THAT ROD THING THAT GOES INTO THE JET.....THATS ALL I KNOW.WELL I KNOW I HAVE AN EDLECRAP AND IT SUCKS......:D

to do anything more than adjust the idle mixture screws, you gotta buy a jet kit. You can change to different size metering rods and springs to richen or lean the cruise/ light load circuit, and jets to adjust WOT and make big jumps in overall mixture. Its actually quite eay...if you have your edelbrock manual read that and itll tell ya everything u need to know.

If it is rich at idle adjust your air fuel mix...if it is rich when you're in the throttle or going down the road you need a strip kit with different metering rods to jet it down. what engine is it on a 550 is a small ass carb so it must not be much. A 600 is pretty close for a mild sbc 350. Is this on a v6 or you stupid enough to puti it on a i6 or 4?

From my experiences with Edelbrock performer carbs, I would take it off and toss it in the garbage! Not worth a crap for off road, IMO....
The 2 that I had ran rich not matter what I did to them....I tried to run one on a Cruzah through he rubicon, and that was a nightmare....it would load up on every grade, and die....
Everytime I went up to the mountains to hunt or camp the freakin carb would run extremely rich at higher elevations. I used to have to stop and lean the carb out on the way up the mountain.
Yes they had the off road needles and seats also, the carb still sucked.
I got tired of screwing with it and put on a quadrojet.....never had another problem. No problems going up or down steep grades, ran like a dream at higher elevations without readjustment.....:skull:

so here's how you adjust your mixture screws on the front. Short of this and you have to go in and change out the jets and such.
1. Pick one mixture screw to start with. Turn it until it gets to the highest idle possible. Then back it off 1/2 a turn. Remember, stop when the idle is at it's highest.
2. Now reset the idle (idle adjustment screw by the linkage).
3. Repeat step 1 with the other screw
4. Repeat step 2
This set's you at lean idle. You're on your own from there!
