I had one that was similar to that, not quite as bad. I wanted to replace it with a 4340 but nobody makes one...and those who make axles shafts didnt seem like they were in a hurry to make them.

It is one of those odd little parts that take a ton of setup and machine time for not a lot of customers, hence any profit.
Before the crash I was messing with these and a hybrid using a D60 joint to eliminate the CV's, but that got shelved.
It was a great concept for Mog-9's but not so much for stock 404's.

:(Took apart the other rear...

Time to call Jack for CTM stubs... even if a stub is as much as a long shaft it will be worth it not changing it out every 2 years..

Keep us posted. It will be interesting to hear price and availability of these. I messaged a few people about these and he was not one of them. Like you said, even if it had cost as much as a long shaft I would have paid it; seems like the stub is more likely to go first.

Has anyone here ever seen a thread where someone converted the 404 over to a RCV or (Longfield?) type axle assembly? You know, the one with that HUGE sealed ball-style joint in place of where a u-joint (or trunnion in our case) usually is....??

I know they are bank, and would need to be custom machined to fit the 404 splines on the portal side but if they are truly bombproof it might be worth the hassle.

Just thinking out loud. I haven't done much searching on this one.
