I have a Air locker and a custom steering setup in the front of my YJ, I would like to have a one piece passenger side axle so that I can use the warn 4340 axles. I want to cut the passenger side tube out of a 95+ cherokee dana 30 and weld it in the place of my vacuum disconnect tube. From what I know, I do not see any unforseen problems with doing this. I would appreciate any comments from anyone who has done this or attempted it.
Thanks
Riley

just get the one piece shaft and change out the seals... check out www.madxj.com for a good writeup on that
FYI, the words "Dana Thirty" will generally give :rainbow: or :flipoff2: responses. IMHO, the 30 can live until i get the coinage fo' the HP44

you're making it much more difficult than it needs to be. Use the full length shaft and new seals as mentioned above. Then make a cover place for the vac disco.

You can also use TJ shafts w/the new 5-760 u-joint If Im not mistaken. Then you cover the vac. and use the new seals that fullreversal is talking about. That should be much stronger.

Help me understand. Why does everyone talk about making a cover plate for the disconnect, when it seals up quite fine on its own? You can even leave the shift fork in, it won't hit the shaft.
I haven't read the madxj article but the couple times I have done this I have removed the roller bearing that supports the intermediate shaft. A one-piece will clear, but if the housing is tweaked at all it will rumble and might even put some stress risers into the shaft.

do you have to get different seals than a regular D30 seal or do you just relocate the existing seal.

Well, I looked at the madxj site. Maybe it's just me but I couldn't find the upgrade page.
A buddy has the part number written down but he's out of town. What I did was pull the carrier and measure the I.D. of the tube and the O.D. of a regular TJ right side shaft where the seal rides. I then had the parts store dig thru their books and find a seal that fit. Just to make sure run 2 side by side since there's plenty of room. In a disco type housing, there is no seal in that area, just axle tube.
So, again, get TJ (or late XJ, ZJ w/ ujoints, whatever, they're all the same width) long side shaft w/ 297, 2 seals. Remove the intermediate shaft support bearing. While it's apart try to scrape all the crud out of the tube so you don't get it on your splines. Make sure the disco shift fork will clear the shaft.

Going to have to agree with this one. Especially if you are looking at re-tubing the one side.
I ran D30 for many years, it only let me down once, but with that said, I have never looked back since getting rid of it.

1. Buy the Warn shaft - pn#38875 - 32.25" long, 297x joint ~180$
2. Open the box
2a. open the plastic baggie with the axle seal and steel plate cover.
3. install the biatch
4. your done! :flipoff2:

The plate and seal come with the axle when you order it.
I have had troubles trying to get any information out of warn concerning their axles, does anyone know of any dealers where I can get the axle for $180.00, I have just seen them for $200+.
The reason why I am not going to swap to a D44 is that I have an air locker in my RR D30 and I have custom high clearance steering with DOM.
