hey all

a buddy and i are going to setup our own gears.

have done much research and the only trivial part is a case spreader. are these needed?

if so, where does one obtain one?

Just set the preload so it is a bitch to get the carrier in if you are using new bearings but if they are used then not as much. I like using a deadblow hammer.

Case spreaders are for sissies, and folks with limited imaginations...

I use two tricks to remove carriers....

1. put a combo wrench on one of the ring gear bolts. point it straight up and rotate the pinion until the wrench hits the top of the hosuing, and keep turning, the carrier will "torque" itself out.

2. Turning the yoke, stuff a rag in between the pinion and ring gear.

make sure ya take the bearing caps off first knucklehead!!!

If I may.. Use the box wrench method, it works well. Don't remove the caps however just loosen them to prevent the carrier from dropping. If you have a helper you trust that's another matter...

I use one. It makes the job go a whole lot easier. If I didn't have one, I would use cjdeans method. They run about $800. for a good one.

Case spreaders <IMG SRC="smilies/rolleyes.gif" border="0"> Been there, done that on this board. Do a search. I asked about spreaders some time ago, and no body around here liked them.

Spreaders can damage a housing if used improperly. If a spreader is used, set it up with a dial indicator, and only spread the housing .015".

But they are expensive, and if you are not doing production work, just get creative about gettting the carrier out.

You know, like chaining the housing to a couple of firmly installed poles(steel), and using a big rig tractor to pull it out with a yank strap.... not that I would know any thing about that <IMG SRC="smilies/rolleyes.gif" border="0"> <IMG SRC="smilies/biggrin.gif" border="0">

Ditto that. The "swami wrench trick" has never let me down.

a winch carefully used works just fine also....
