Are you going to require blue light?..... Because ulta 4 and best in the desert had to stop using them. BLM and law enforcement claims they simulate emergency vehicals.

MNorby

I don't think we were going to require it this year at least but might be a good idea just for visibility when it is dusty.

Getting the buggy ready to go. I can't wait to drive it in Powell with the new suspension. Should be dialed in pretty good:D

Post up who is all coming this year?

Ditchrunner

Mike Jongeling with his yellow 2wd desert truck. Ford power and body. It will run in Pro class. I'll be there with a 71 Ford short box 2wd wannabe desert truck. Mod class for me it looks like.
We're out of Bozeman. There might be 2 more from here also. Another 80s Ford short box based rig (he's on the line between pro and mod - he'll have to get time off though) and possibly a ranger that would have to run pro. They have some work to do on that one, though.
I don't know of any KOH rigs from here that will be running. I've been trying though!

Got most all the obstacle sections setup yesterday for the KOH style race. Here is a gallery to show some of what to expect:

Also can see a few in this albumn from playing on what he had up a few weeks ago:

we piled a bunch of dirt around tires too for now hoping it will settle in more before the race.

Didn't add much for cement stuff this year but we will have a torch handy in case any shows up. I think we got it all though the last few times now though. This is also why we did the tires, so if you don't like driving over the cement you have a completely alternative option for the race. The rock crawl though will wind across the dirt, tires, and cement sections.

Sweet!

I've got the truck running. Now it is just tighten up time and maybe a few "nice to have" things.

Are we going to have the mandatory pit stop?

MNorby

Yes, there will be a mandatory pit again this year in the baja.

I don't think the KOH will. The logistics of the course and the time frame won't allow it too well.

add another one to our list, this buggy (Jay's) is going racing. :smokin: Not sure which race he plans on racing in. Prep begins tomorrow night...

MNorby, since he only has smooth body air shocks can he race in the mod class or is it automatically pro or is he stuck into a KOH class for the main desert race?

Technically the rules says coilovers/bumps but really I bet will have to run pro in the baja since he is non-stock style suspension front and rear. It will be ultimately decided at tech Saturday though.

I dont think there will be a main koh desert race and we will be bunched with the unlimited cars since we will have our own koh race at 9:00 am

If Jay adds bump then I'd say Pro, otherwise I think it would be a better fit in the Mod because of the single air shocks. I agree the chassis has way more potential but I think it's going to be a more mod capability with the single air's.

I doubt he's going to care either way so we will ask the tech guys.

We'll decide at tech in how he will class and try to make things as fair as possible. IMO its all about having fun and wheeling/racing and we will try to make it that way. Also got 2 big boxes from UPS full of trophies yesterday thanks to Inland Truck Parts!

Thats what my plan is. Racing the Koh race in the morning then throwing on the 35 corr tires for the baja race and then racing the night race! Lets keep hoping for no rain and nice weather since they might have to postpone the race if we cant even get to the race area with all the mud!

Yep. A guy could run all 4 events really; the KOH, baja, rock crawl, and night baja

Edit: looks like you guys beat me to it. Sky just cleared and sunny now. Supposed to be windy tomorrow. Hopefully it can dry up and no more rain.

Just drove out to track and there are puddles out there but its really starting to dry up nicely. We are still a go for the weekend. Some roads leading to Powell have closures. I have heard I-90 by Big Timber, Mt is 1 lane traffic, Also there is construction south of Bridger both ways and at one point it was closed heading toward Lovell/Deaver direction. The construction is much shorter and less severe leaving Bridger via Belfry direction but will be probably 10 miles farther to get to track. If you go that way you will get to Belfry and take a LEFT to go Cody direction. About 5 miles after you cross into Wyoming you will turn LEFT toward Powell. You will go probably 20 miles and hit Highway 14-A and turn LEFT to Powell. Go through Powell and Garland then about 3 miles past Garland on top the hill you will turn LEFT on Ln 5 and follow signs to the track.Definitely plan extra time for road closures and construction.

If you are using a GPS the address to the track is: 651 Lane 5 Powell, Wy 82435

Here is map from Laurel, Mt to Track via Belfry and less construction. Check road report before leaving though.
http://maps.google.com/maps?f=d&source=s_d&saddr=laurel+mt&daddr=44.92937,-109.08445+to:651+Ln+5,+Powell,+WY+82435&hl=en&geocode=FfzauAIdM0eE-SmfJnz-QY5IUzFDaoIk5mIMaw%3BFVqRrQId3oB_-SmhYnDdhslOUzF2l_zAs_zJMg%3BFQbFqwId6hGF-SlpvaLpLE5JUzFb9oYuFrrz3A&mra=dpe&mrsp=1&sz=9&via=1&sll=45.240315,-108.76011&sspn=1.494935,3.348083&ie=UTF8&ll=45.07643,-108.892365&spn=0.749624,1.674042&t=h&z=10

People coming from Bozeman more can head South out of Columbus too and skip some construction. Here is a map for that, again check road report before leaving. I have heard of road closure around Roberts but not sure if still active. Alternatively you can go via Columbus-Abroskee-Red Lodge too but it has more curves and hills.

Thanks for the heads up Matt!

I had to drill and put screw in studs in 2 spots tonight on the trash can engine. Then a lifter collapsed. I'm pulling the intake and stuffing in new lifters tomorrow night. Yay!

Somehow I'll be there. Hopefully the engine holds up for the baja and the night race.
The rear fenders won't be making an appearance at this race. Too much other crap went wrong to get those mounted correctly and I don't want to unnecessarily trash my fiberglass 80s stepsides.

For numbers: Is it ok if I just paint numbers on the doors? I have templates for the numbers, but I won't have the time to hang number plates unless the lifter job goes quicker than what the rest of this pig has.

We are hoping for number fins on the roof so lap counter can see them even is side of rig gets muddy but do what you have to do, its not that big of deal and with doing a checkpoint this year should prevent most problems.

Not sure on the night race, we are foretasted 70% chance rain Sunday night, see if it really does rain and how sloppy it gets.

Spent most of the day out at the track yesterday. There was a few muddy corners but we got them mostly drained and they have solid bottom. Most of the wet spots are in the inside of corners but are easily avoidable by taking the corner higher on the bank. I'll be heading out there in a few for the rest of the weekend, hope to see you all there.

hey i was busy co driving and sosked in rain and mud then wrenching. its been raining most of the day. drizzle mostly but pretty constant so everything is mud and slick. its bentinite and like driving on ice. shane did finish in second I think after a flat tire and some leaking tranny lines. Jay had some issue with his transmussion during the first Koh race. Garrett had his cooling fan explode during the baja race and Jasons power steering pump drive shaft broke on our second or final lap. He still got third I think. should have some pics later tomorrow hopefully.

Thanks to you guys for putting on the race. I'm sorry I couldn't get mine running. Crap radiator anyway.

Christoferson (spelling?) was fast.

KOH run was fun to watch. The buggies are getting faster in the desert section.

Good raffle prizes too.

Thanks again,

EDIT: PS - the best driving all weekend was a tossup between my buddies kid who brought his 2010 Camaro SS out to the race site (twice!) just to bum a ride with me in the racer and me getting the motorhome out on Sunday night!
