: Heim Joint Questions

I have been pricing several heim joint combos, I was thinking about using one with a 3/4" thru bolt and 7/8" threaded end for my 4 link system.

While comparing prices I noticed that the 1" thru bolt 1-1/4" shank is cheaper then the 3/4 by 7/8 heim. If I went with the 1" heim I could same some coin by tapping the 1.5"x .250 wall DOM instead of using tube adapters...

My question will there be enough wall thickness left after it is tapped to hold up and if not should I go with a 1.75" x say .3125" wall if they make such a thing?

And how much of a pain is it to tap the tubes? I have access to a milling machine (ie big ass drill press) to do the work, is there a trick drill bit/tap I can use?

Thanks, having this sorted out will allow me to order my parts sooner..

See this page of my sight.

It will give you tube sizes available, as well as dimensions for tapping - so you can calculate it all out for yourself. I aint gona do it for ya :flipoff2:

I believe you need less than the 1" inner diameter on the tube to thread for a 1" heim. I may be wrong tho - it's been known to happen before. :)

Well thats a hell of a lot of useful information, got that one bookmarked.. and yes I want this spoonfed to me! :flipoff2:

Since your DOM chart only goes up to 1.5 OD .25 wall it sorta let me hangin...

Will the say nominal 1/8" wall thickness left after tapping provide sufficent strength or should I go for a thicker wall?

Been searching.. this is going to be a PITA! Tapping that is!

Tapping links sucks. Just buy the tube adapters and 1.25" rod ends from PIG and call it good. Then go buy some 2" od x 0.250 wall and you are all set with some beefy links. Or go thicker and bigger if you want.

I was just trying to get around having 2" dia links..... With 2" I will have to make my front bracket hang a bit lower from the frame. No biggy, was just a thought!

Thanks

Those bungs will also work with 1 7/8"OD-3/16" wall and 1.75"OD-.120" wall

PIG's tube adapters for the 1.25" rod ends are for 1.5" ID tubing.

Hmmm. Tapping really sucks, huh? Gee, I used 1.50" dia. solid cold rolled ETD shaft for all of my links. Then I had a guy who works the lathe at my job drill and tap them all for $10 and a Coke. I don't think it was all that bad, you're all just whiners. :flipoff2:
