If the nut was too tight, you should have damaged all 4 tabs, but, they shouldn't break at all. Is it the inner or outer nut?

They are possible cross threaded . It may take agood chisel and hamer to get the nut started backwards . Once you get these off you need to replace them with later modle ones . 86 thru 96 I believe are what you want . They are one piece design . You may have to modify the key on the newer one . the slot on the spendal is smaller than the key . This setup worked great on my 79 front end .

What kind of socket did you get?
I've seen two types, one has four prongs just sticking off the end of it, the other is an actual socket that fits over/around the locknut.

The latter type is FAR better. Unfortunately I don't remember what brand it is. It has four bosses on the inside that index the nut. I bought it at Pep Boys many years ago.

I got one of the sockets that fits over the nuts about a year ago from Advanced Auto. It is a lot better than the ones with just the prongs sticking out.

Yeah I got one of the shitty sockets that has the four prongs I guess I'll just go out and get one of the sockets that fit around the nut, thanks guys:flipoff2:

So I threw out the shitty hastings socket and got me a OTC-7157 the nuts came right off along with the hub bearings and rotor Question is how do I get the spindle off the Knuckle I took off the nuts but cant get it to budge.
The Haynes manual for 73-79 pickups and broncos is shit it says just to take the spindle off carefully (It also shows a 8-lug D44 as the bronco and f-150 front ends, and a 5-lug king-pin D60 as the f-250,350 frontends:eek: )
So it looked like it had been hit with a hammer so I hit it lightly (not on the bearing races) and it wont budge seeing hows I dont have a soft faced hammer I thought I'd ask here before I go ape on it!:flipoff2:
Thanks Dale

I tryed useing a dead blow hammer to mine, gave up and rented a slide hammer puller. It just screwed on the end of the spindle and popped of nice and neat. I had a pickup where the previous owner used a chisle. DON'T do that. Two years I wondered why my locking hub unit wouldn't slide out or in nice.

Bashing it with a 2-3 foot long wood 2X4 on all sides should free it up. It's most likely rusted into place. Spraying some penetrating oil around it should help.

They are a PITA. It WILL eventually come loose with repeated bashing. Definately do not strike the spindle with a metal hammer.
You can use a 2X4 against the spindle to protect it and hit the 2X4 with the hammer, though.

Yup, Lay a 2X4 on the spindle and beat it with a BFH...
I have done this MANY times and it allways works.

Like they said beat the hell out of it till it comes off. I gave up on the 2x4 thing. I just hit them between the bearings. Also once it starts to move, drive a screwdriver between the spindle and knuckle, then hit it from the other side.
