: Not enough throw form Sammy steerbox with Yota axles

I put Yota axles under my Zook with plans of eventually going to power steering from the Tracker motor that I'm swapping in. Well so far with the stock Samurai box I can't get full steering either way. I haven't checked my Tracker steering box yet but I think the pitman arm is the same length so that one might not work for me either. So would a Yota IFS box give me enough throw? So how does the IFS YOta one swap in? Doesn't it mount on the OUTSIDE of the frame? Could I use the Tracker PS pump with the YOta steering box?? BTW My current steering set up is the homemade knuckle over where you take a spare driver's side steering arm, flip it, & weld it onto the passenger side arm.
Thanks in advance!

I have the same homebrew crossover arm, toy axles, and I suspect the same problem. I haven't really looked at it much, but my turning radius seem ridiculously large, and I have long suspected this is the problem.

I'm getting ready to install power steering, new DL, TR, and high steer, leaning toward Kong or Sky on the high-steer.

I already have everything for the sidekick PS, so I'd like to stick with that.

So post up please if you have and good tips on making this work.

On your hy-steer arm, is it possible to move the hole that your drag link mounts to to "shorten" the steering arm? (can you drill a new hole closer to the king pin?)

No because it is just a regular Toyota steering arm flipped upside down.

Sky Manufacturing and Kongs4x4 both offer "shorty" high-steer kits, just FYI... Only $500 more than your current setup

Yes, the Toy IFS Box mounts on the outside of the frame. One of the mounting bolts is actually above the frame, the other two are sleeved through it. Stock IFS box, location, and arm:

A toyota Tarago pitman arm has the same spline on the steering box end. The lower end may need reaming to suit your ball joints.
The arm is about 2 inches longer and has 2.5 inches more drop. ( slightly chunkier too)
I guess they were still called Taragos over there, those ugly boxy POS Toyota vans with seats for 9 little bastard kids in them.
It has to be the earl non power steering model.

Just for giggles have you checked that the box is centered properly. The reason i asked is that i ran a stock manual box to aftermarket steering arms and to make it work i had to make some adjustments. I sliped the steering shaft off and centered things all up. I did notice that straight back on the pitman arm didnt seem to be the center point on the box. Could have just been my junk dono...

But with the stock 5" stock pitman arm going to the 7" steering arm I was able to steer 35s "ok". I didnt feel like I was loosing turingin radius as I was not able to max it out to the turn stops due to leaf/tire rubbage. And with the locker it just would have been painful..

Good luck.

I had that setup for quite a while - it sucked to say the least.

Evan, an All-Pro arm would probably put you in good shape.

I finally fixed my situation with these :grinpimp:

Like I'd ever run BFGs. :shaking: :p :p

Oh, and a buddy of mine destroyed his All pro pitman arm (pic below) and both birfs on the last trip to the Superlift OHV park in hot springs.

Neither Kong's nor Sky sells "shortie" hysteer arms.
Only OTT sells them.

OTT's web site is down. Before it went down, I sent an email to all three addresses on the www site, and they all bounced.

Anyone know what's up? Got a phone number?

How about calling an OTT dealer? Like jim@inchwormgear.com (just an suggestion).

Sorry, you're right. Kongs redesigned their arms - ask azrckcrawler about them, I know he's running them.

But you're right - i was thinking about OTT, not Sky Mfg. for the shorty ones. Oops. :emb3:

Oilburner,

As I recall, you got the shortie arms so you could fit the Toy IFS box. What are the pro & con's of the shortie arms?

OK edumacate me on these. Why do you & should I want the stubby steering arms?? To move the axle ahead?? Cna't you just mount the box further forward??

Are those made with a tapered hole or for use with hiem joints only?

While they will increase the effort rquired to turn somewhat... it also requires less travel to go from lock to lock. So if you're somewhat short in that department (like yourself) it might remedy that situation... ;)

The AllPro arm I have uses a heim joint.

OTT sells a pitman arm that has less drop to it than a stock IFS arm. They also have 3 different lengths I think.

I installed my Toy IFS box as far forward as I could - it is literally touching the round tube that connects the two frame runners. I had moved my front axle forward a good bit - coudn't quote exactly how far tho - enough to center the wheel in my 'custom' wheel openings. ;) The box I got already had the AllPro arm on it, but if it hadn't come with it I'd had to have bought some other non-stock IFS arm anyway. Also, with a stock IFS arm, my leaf springs would have hit the arm. I measured several different sets of hysteer arms, and found that anything I bought would put the tie rod too far forward - it would come in contact with the pitman arm. Then I heard that Rick at OTT was making some shorer arms, originally for the Toy IFS guys who were converting to a straight front axle. Apparently some of them had clearance problems similar to mine. I actually ordered my arms through Randy at A.O.R. 970.263.4300 I had spoken with him & he is running a set of shortie arms on their Toy truck.

As far as steering effort, I cannot tell any difference from my old setup, but the Samurai is much lighter than a Toyota pickup.
So far I haven't found any drawbacks, but this is for MY situation - your's may be completely different. All I know is that the arms were the perfect solution for me. :)

A word of warning, though - do Not get in a hurry with OTT. They make excellent products, but contact with Rick is hit-and-miss at best, and I get the feeling that 4x4 stuff isn't exactly at the top of his shop's priority list. This means it will take time to get your stuff made, unless they have it on the shelf the day you order. It took me 9 weeks to get my arms, but I did have mine made for heims instead of the Ford ends (I think that's what they use)

Call Rick and when you eventually catch him by the phone he will be honest with you, but you'd better add half-again to his production time estimate ;) 604.764.7871

As I remember, Chris (Azrckcrawler) is running a Celica pump with the new Kong's arms. I am not sure of the structural differences between the IFS box vs. the Celica so you may be able to use longer hysteer arms with his setup. He is also S/R so that may make a difference.

HTH,
