I'll be there! It's one of SoPo's favorite annual trips. (and Sammi's B-day)

Lets hope for good weather!

As always, pick up your trash and leave the trees alone! I know it gets posted every year, but for some reason every year someone/group still messes up. This is one of my favorite trips, but the idiots were thick enough last year that some swore they wouldn't come again. Lets police ourselves and don't let it get ruined.

Post up your pics from years past if ya got em!

head out 80 east, take pyriamid hwy (i think 431?, not sure on that), stay on pyriamid hwy all the way through sparks and you eventually get to a fork, go left (winnemucca ranch road i think) and just cruise on that until it turns into dirt road. By that point you will begin to see others heading out there. It is really easy to get to.

I wouldn't call it a "fork". Pyramid continues straight, but Winnemucca Ranch rd is the first paved road you'll see for a while and runs about 45 degrees to Pyramid. You'll come up over a hill and it can sneak up on you.

sierravalley, I'm sure it's been done before. There aren't too many lines out there anymore that haven't been done. A smaller rig would make that line way easier than mine. Thanks for riding around with me for sure, it was nice to meet ya.

The garbage wasn't nearly as bad I've seen before, but we did manage to pick up a black bag full of cans/trash around the crackline area. My scientific observation was that Coors light drinkers like to litter more than Bud light drinkers 10:1:laughing:

RockApe has a pic of his buggy on it in the daylight on the first page of this thread. I'll have a tough time describing where it is, although it is in plain sight and everyone drives right by it. I know I've never even looked at it until Jesse lined up.

Its below Smokeline (I think that's the name of the line) in the dirt lot area. There was a DJ set up in that area last year.

Thanks! That eases the pain a little. But what's weird is the case was found dumped in the trash at the nearest gas station. My buddy lost his wallet and was searching around looking for his cards and stuff and saw it. Almost like it was dumped. Anyways it's been suspended and reported stolen. We have an upgrade in a few weeks so she can get another one.

I did pull a fat wheel stand on that road that winds between the tree and bushes. With no floor boards it just disappeared...... Lol

I had a great time even tho I only made it out Saturday, I dented up my fresh first gen like a idiot since I didn't have sliders and really wasn't ready to wheel it yet but shit happens. I went back on Monday to ride my dirtbike and was a little dissapointed to see the place trashed tho... I was intending on picking up all the bs I could find and me and some friends were gonna stack all the unburned wood and pallets an have a fire but I managed to slam a rock while riding with my left foot and break it.

Even with a boot on my big toe shattered and split my foot from the to the bottom and I had to have surgery today to patch it up. So no wheelin or riding for 6-12 weeks they say. I'll be ready for next year again! Just hopefully not broken

I was out there yesterday picking up trash. The place is a dump now. I guess it's like this every year. I don't understand why fellow offroaders would trash a place like that. And, yes, I seen them do it. Some guys over by Smokeline really trashed it up and just left.

If you bring it, you should take it with you when you leave. It's just totally disrespectful. And the place is going to be shut down because of it.

Had a good weekend I guess. Rolled it backwards Saturday night on a wall climb and bent /broke the front of the frame and bent a coil over. Then the next day the truck wouldn't start. Wheeled a lot though. Also did a complete roll on friday night almost back into it's wheels.

This is fuckin stupid, I dont understand why us wheelers cant pick up our shit when we are done. I have been wheeling since I was a kid, and we always pick up what we brought, and more. Moonrocks will get shut down for being too trashed and we will no longer be able to play there. I personally enjoy the terrain, and the four wheeling, but I decided not to go this year because of too many ass hats that dont know how to go slow around the camping area, and for all the damn trash left behind. You assholes know who you are, and if you dont like my attitude twords the situation I invite you to come have a talk with me about it. Speaking of stuff that's hard to understand....I was watching a guy in a 4-Runner Saturday night, he rolled on his side trying to climb something and someone pulled him back over. I drove over beside where he was and was watched him try the same line again. After watching for a minute I realized the guy wasn't wearing a seat belt and didn't have doors, a door bar, or anything. I just don't get it. :shaking:

:mad3:Yeah the trash was bad this year. Sunday night a couple car loads of teenage locals show up. Big fire lots of drinking, normal shit. Monday morning there was like 3 cases of beer cans left behind from them :mad3:. Its not just the wheelers leaving trash. We pickup our area and went out Monday morning and picked up a black trash bags full of cans before we left.

Now for the wost part of the weekend. Some mother fucker in a RV towing a orange mid 70s Toyota hilux truck drained his shitter right in the middle of camp. Driving right past our camp just straight dumping his tank. If anybody sees this mother fucker he needs his ass kicked. I know if I ever see him or any of my club members see him he wont be able to walk away :mad3:.

There is my rant. Other then that we had a blast this weekend. Now where are all the pics. Come on people post up some pics. I have tons just got to go through them and then ill get some posted.

WTF don't people realize pallets are held together by NAILS that dont fawking burn. nice, leave those there for us to get flat tires from. they left around 2 or three in the morning and left thier pile smoldering and shit everywhere. some people need to be sterilized at birth.

I've been getting to know Steve and his dad also, definately wouldn't be on purpose!

Our camp also got to enjoy the local yahoos first hand, in this pic the CB cord circled our camp and you can see my red tent. They were just to the left of us down next to that rock face. We actually wheeled that obstacle next to the area a few times and you want to know the awesome part? We found a couple dozen rusty nails ON THE FAWKING OBSTACLE...apparently pallets are just the cool thing to be burning, especially directly on the fawking trails?
http://i78.photobucket.com/albums/j95/mochamike/Wheeling/MoonRocks052011/IMG_1201.jpg

I'm pissed that I didn't even glance at my tires after trusting a brand new air gauge to air them down...10lbs on the gauge ended up being 14 PSI...its obvious my tires are full as hell in all the pics.

I tried the crack until I popped my drivers side front window falling in

and I don't know the name of this obstacle, it's right above smoke line I think? but I went at it for like 5 minutes...I just couldn't get the jeep to slide over the frame side link mounts

http://i949.photobucket.com/albums/ad335/highsierracrawler/Moonrocks%20Memorial%20Day%202011/P5280933.jpg

And I gave the wall just to the right of the crack hell for a while too...ended up pushing too hard and taking out a rear u-joint and breaking a couple teeth off my rear 9" ring gear at the end of this video, AS I MAKE IT UP! Talk abut a pisser haha
YouTube - ‪Agitated Pancake u-joint carnage at Moon Rocks 4/30/11‬‏ (http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=8dsHtP4Ewh4)

So with a couple hi lift jacks we had to make some magic happen with 2 hi lifts and some ingenuity so I could swap the new front 3rd member to the rear so I could drive it 150 miles home :flipoff2: :D

We camped in the first upper camping area (about 1/2 mile up the road from the main area).
We picked up at least 100+ pallet nails all over the place.
Next time I'm going to bring a magnet on a stick to clear the area we will be in.

Here are some more shots of the area taken just before the pic above.
This was Sunday afternoon around 2-4pm.
Half of the people had left before this. (all of the spots between cars were full Fri/Sat).

No screw was involved, I just bumped my head on the cage. It was my fault. I noticed that my head was close to the cage when I jumped in, but decided that I would just slouch in the seat a bit and tighten the belt. I know better, but ohh well.

I am a fire/paramedic and I knew I was fine, but I just didn't want to panic all the people there, so I rushed out. Our camp was right there, so I just went back to my camper and cleaned up. It is amazing how much a scalp cut can bleed. Sorry if I scared anyone, I was actually back out there within 10-15 minutes.

It is retarded though how many people where driving around with their harnesses hanging out of their cabs. When we were standing on our platform in front of our camp, we yelled/ heckled several who drove by like that. most just stared and kept driving...

That's an unfortunate situation with the two trucks, but it's good everyone ended up being ok. That is a perfect example of how fast things can happen. BUCKLE UP! Always! I'm so OCD about it that I notice myself feeling awkward even driving my rig into the shop or onto the trailer unbuckled.

MORE PICS! LESS DRAMA! It was a fun weekend!

Every trip I go on is with Steve and his dad. He is always more than careful and has been around long enough to the harmful effects something like that can have on our wheeling community. Accidents happen and it sucks when it reflects bad on us as a whole.

Throughout the entire weekend(and every weekend) we have done our part to keep the trails clean. He carries more oil spill kits then anyone I've seen!

All in all great weekend! Nice meeting some of you.

I have yet to make it to Moonrocks but it sounds like this past Memorial Weekend was a bit crazy and the trash/nails/etc may have gotten a little out of hand. Glad no one was hurt too bad in the accident. If I wasn't so damn busy right now I'd offer to form a clean up for this Saturday/Sunday. Don't give BLM any more fuel for their fire...

People are going to be yahoos whether they came from California or Nevada, it's not like you snap your fingers as you cross the border and everyone becomes assholes. Honestly, keep the trails secret, because I agree that's what needs to happen to keep them around nowadays, but do you really think all the BS that goes on comes from californians only? I see it everywhere I go, it's just how some uninformed/worthless people like to act with this sport, unfortunately.

Ya but people come out to moon rocks and think its a free fer all. Ive seen it many times over the years and im pretty tired of it. You all are going to fuck it up for everyone. I know most do a decent job, but if you dont stop the people and educate the ones who are making a mess then you are just as much to blame. Guess we will pick up after you all once again.:flipoff2:

Here is my quick little observation, I was up there and the area I camped at was super clean when I left. BUT right next to us was a shit ton of LOCAL NEVADA KIDS that came out just to party on friday night. They made a huge mess!! They got hammered and got in a fight that somehow made its way into our campsite in the middle of the night, and knocked a bunch of the dirt bikes down and broke a bunch of chairs. They all left in the morning and left burnt chairs and pallets in the fire, glass liquor bottles on the ground and cans everywhere!! So don't point fingers at certain people cause all those peeps came from your side of the mountain. I am coming back up two moon rocks next weekend for my bachelor party, we will do a cleanup of the area again before we leave.

I was at lahontan last year and had some kids behind us partying and drinking and destroying shit all night. In the morning I noticed they were packing up and not taking any of their trash. So I yelled over to them to take their trash to the dumpster. I got the typical "FAWK YOU!!!" in return. So I walked over and started throwing their garbage in their trucks. When guys for 3 or 4 other camps came over and started helping out, the punk kids shut the hell up and left with their trash in their trucks/cars.

I don't care who left the garbage, I'm pretty sure it wasn't just wheelers or punk kids or dirt bikers........ But we ALL have to chip in and ensure that these people don't get these kickass places shut down. :D

Not blaming everyone from that side of the mountain, Some of the locals ARE part of the problem to. How about a Yearly pirate cleanup early June Every year.

Thanx for offering to help clean it up Thats Awesome.

Travis and the Zombies Rock at being responsible for other peoples shit. But it shouldn't just be the Zombies and the Pirates and the Reno 4x4 crowd.

I would do a clean up after an event like this on Monday morning before everyone leaves. And yes, monitoring during the event, talking to folks and making sure every camp knows they have to clean up their mess before they go will help.

Being the person that walks around and talks to folks is mostly fun, sometimes it's not. But if you have a good group like the Zombies to back you up, it makes short work of it.

Thanks again Travis and Crew.

was wheeling saturday on the back side of the rocks and there were Four or Five rigs parked when they drove off there were five or six cans laying on the ground all around where they were parked for a while. They all had nevada plates. I dont know if the cans were there before those guys stopped there or if they came from them. But they still should have picked them up while they were there instead of the next person to come along to clean up after them, which i did. People are all not as aware as others on the condition of the trails or the need to keep them clean or face closures.
Id suggest next year that some club take some kind of trail boss/trail crew duty up there for the holiday weekends to police the area ourselves for people leaving trash around or anything that would give the sport and area a bad name. Moonrocks is a great place to wheel and alot of other nevada trails are also and would be a shame to see them be closed.

Anyone know what the rules would be for having a roll off dumpster brought there? I would be willing to pay for one next year. I think that would help a ton in getting people to pick up there shit and toss it in the dumpster. And it would be there to do a mini cleanup on monday next year. Just throwing it out there....

Good idea im sure a few of our clubs would be willing to get a few dumpsters brought out for the weekend. And I agree that if there were some staged out there that there would be alot more people leaving trash around. Not saying it would fix the problem though. There was alot more than just wheelers up there and im sure they contributed also. Maybe some kinds of signs on the road into the camp also would be a good idea for next year.

Agreed. And just remember probibly a majority of the people out there wheeling are not members of sites like this so they do not get as much exposure to the problems we have all been faceing fighting to keep our land and trails open to the public. Its a battle thats going to be hard fight and wont end anytime soon.

The most important thing is to keep the planning as low key and informal as possible.

You don't want any one club being responsible, unless you want to have to coordinate with the BLM and have Job Hazard Analysis' done and EA's and all the other junk.

Trav, with your connections see if you can find a local company to donate the dumpster, we did that for one of our Greenhorn Clean ups.

The other option is the opposite - get a Friends of Moonrocks together, get a 501c3, and work with the BLM all the time and be a slave to the politics. The longer you can hold that off the better.

Key words to avoid attracting attention:

Event
Organize
Monitors
Patrols
Crews

Just do it - don't get fancy.:)

Ha Ha Your right, I'm the bad guy for being upset about it. I never wheel there on Big weekends but I do go out and clean it up. Maybe my first statement was a little harsh but it got your attention RIGHT!! I was trying to clarify my statement because I know its not everyone over the hill. Just really frustrated to have to do it EVER year. We have tons of nice clean hardcore trails over here to wheel. I guess I should just sit back and let them close it cause I have better spots here anyway. :shaking: This is the first time someone has offered to come back over and help! Thanx for that I'll buy you a cold one when you get here. :grinpimp:

Cool!!

Just remember it takes a very good, large group of core volunteers to pull it off. It's a long term commitment, political savvy is a must, and the future members have to be constantly cultivated.

my hat's off to you sir. way to make the point clear. i think the "free"ness of the areas is also what makes them a haven for dipshits. i know people are gonna bitch, and i hate to say it, but i don't mind having to pay to get in at good places like moonrocks and the rubicon. so what if you have to pay $10-$15 a rig, it would cut down on the dumbasses that got nothing better to do than come out and Fawk up some prime areas. if it costs them money just to be there than that is usually deterrent enough. when it costs taxpayer money to keep coming in to police and clean things up then they have just cause to shut them down for "budgetary reasons". it would also pay to keep a ranger on site to keep an eye on the place, and keep someone employed.

in theory it sounds good but leaving any public lands to be managed for rec use sets us all up for the blm to just say it's too much trouble and we are shutting it down. Very few asshats get away with that kind of behavior on the con.... Because people police themselves and others... Us locals would like to think we could keep moonrocks a place without having all the government restrictions that have been set on the rubicon. We have logged quite a few hours with the blm on clean ups and have had media coverage to allow the general public aware that we all aren't the douche bags that treat it as a free for all and could care less if it was there tomorrow.

Exactly why I suggested to keep it low key. Once you get to an "official" status it becomes a major management nightmare and will suck the life out of you.

Friends of Greenhorn and Friends of the Rubicon are completely informal groups. They work because they attract caring volunteers through action.

You can't do it this way forever - but keep it low key as long as you possibly can.

You have to trust me on this.

Monday morning I told everyone on here I would be at the crack early am. I saw a few people already picking up trash when I got there. I got my hungover self a hand full of bags and started in picking up trash. This lead to a local guy coming out of his camper and asking what I was doing. He then pitched in and then lead to two other camps pitching in. That is all that really has to happen is we as a wheelin community just start cleaning up and explaning and others what is going on and trails shutting down and scare them with the truth and it makes them want to help. When I left v crack and the lines around it they were clean and getting even cleaner by people spreading the word and handing out trash bags to other parts of moonrocks. I have tried to do this every monday morning after the memorial weekend because this way you catch the =asshat d bag shave with a chesse grader eat a bowl of d#@ks= people that just go out there and do not care. Friends of moonrocks is a great idea. Just telling others and if you SEE it happening take their trash they put on the ground and do as my buddy did and sneak it back into their rig. Sorry for the rant of sort very touchy subject because I love all the trails that we get to wheel on.

I camped with friends in the Upper camping area (1/2 mile up the road from the crawling area).

We left Monday morning & for the most part all the people who left before us took their trash with them.
I did pick up about 12-18 bottles & cans that a group had left in their smoldering fire pit.

The thing that bugs me more is all the folks burning pallets.

We picked up at least 100 nails in our camping area.
I just spent $1k on tow rig tires & really didn't want to have to deal with a nail in my tire.

My buddy and I arrived Sat night around 11pm. Never been there before and it was crazy that night. Woke up that morning to a sad sight at the "v-crack." We hiked to the top of the rock formation and picked up as much as we could into two safeway bags. Was pretty sad to see so many bottles :( . Pistachio guy, c'mon, I understand that they are going to eventually degrade into the soil but the million pistachio shells at vcrack made it look like shit.

And mochamike that wheelstand was definitely vertical in person
