I have 2 Toyota FJ40s and like Toyota. I am looking for a a daily driver for my son and would like some input .
We found a really clean ( no rust) 88 4 runner 4 cylinder-IFs- 140k
The problem is the owner parked it cause it started making a knocking sound. The sound to me does not sound like a rod/bearing knock. The sound goes away with higher rpm but is mostly there at startup and low/med acceleration. Sounds like a noise higher up on the engine like valvetrain. Compression is great although the PO overheated it and re did the head/ gasket and new radiator 5k ago and at that time had a new timing chain done. ( most likeley not oem chain)
Any thoughts as to the noise ? Someone mentioned the lower ends of the 22re hold up pretty well . I think its maybe spark knock or timing gear related/
What should I look for in a 88 ?
We can get it reasonably inexpensive cause of the knocking/tapping. Not afraid to yank the engine if need be and do a rebuild. This is one of those daily driver 4 runners that has been realyy maintained and serviced.
BTW what does a rebuild run for the 22RE? if done ourselves and contract out the machine work.?

Lot of questions...thanks for the time.

$1500 my not be to bad if the int. and body are in good shape and maybe an SR5. You could buy a low mileage junk yard motor for about +/- $500 and have a good running 4runner for $2000 or less. Will you have to do anything else to it , tires, etc. ?

i just bought an 87. i paid 1100 for it but it needs a new tranny. the engine is making a tapping noise but its just the valves needing to be adjusted.

Both motors that I had knocks with...188K+ mi had broken pistons which was the cause of the noise...goth also had all rings busted, but it went away as it warmed up also, drove em 3 yrs that way...then I got low mile motors and swapped em in...1500 is not a bad deal...500-800 for almost new motors and 1100+ for new ones..I would start looking for a motor and get the 4runner as long as the rest is in super shape..
