: J-20 axles?

I have a 78' j-20 dana 44 front end with stock 8 lug outers. The WMS to WMS measurement is 67". It looks as though the reason that it is wider than a waggy is in the hubs. The hub only sticks out maybe 4" past the wheel mounting surface, as opposed to like 7" on most 44's. Are the inner axles the same as a waggy? What about the outers? Warn does not list axles for this application. Do I have to remove the axles, measure, and have custom ones made?

sounds like external hubs

No, they are internal, but thicker and shorter.

I believe the inners are the same as the FSJ widetracks. IE widetrack cherokees, not narrow track waggys. The diff tubes are also longer than the waggy fronts, so that's where the width difference comes in. Not sure if this helps you at all...
Doing the J20 swap soon cause I busted my rear D44 this weekend:nuke: :nuke:...was bound to happen sooner or later

8 lug hubs are 1.5" wider per side then 6 lug, so 3" total. I am pretty sure they are the same as a waggy but may not be. I know you can at least get short side from warn but not sure about the long ( I could go measure but threw the long side away because I narrowed my housing)

This is the j-20 hub. The short side is 17 5/8" from end to center of u-joint.

my j-20 44 has a long side axle that is 35.5" long from tip of axle to center of joint.

I'm pretty sure my short side axle is 16.75" though ... I could have that measurement confused with something else.

I have 34 3/4" long and 16 11/16" short? Same as a J10, except for the hub. I measured 16 3/4" the first time, but remeasured at 16 11/16", so...

Outers are all the same.

Also, you'll notice the rear is offset by ~6".

I ran that same exact axle for years. Never leaked and only broke 297's. It was a damn fine axle. :D

ahh .... who knows mine might be 16 11/16 also :D

I thought it was the discrepancy in my 35.5" long and your 34.75" long ... which I find quite confusing ... though my axle did come out right at 68" wide. very odd. though amc did use whatever parts were handy it seems.

I can't measure either, it is 16 11/16. If you burn an inch while measuring, you must subtract it from the final.

Thanks, now I can go find spares.

Does this mean that any of these vehicles will have the same axles as my 78' J20 HT?

Should be a better chart in a day or two on my web page. It's hard to copy and past in this forum.
