Have a friend who has a FJ80, and I'm twisting his arm to get him to tow my 40 to our last trail run of the season before I put Blue into hibernation.

I'm ~4500lbs, and the trailer is 1500-ish.

His 80 is Bone Stock, does have a factory installed (I think) hitch on it...

Whaddya think? the trail is ~2 hours away, no BIG mountain passes.

my housemate has a bone stock 1998 HZJ80, and has towed me when i was too broken to drive!

it was naturally aspirated with 280,00kms on it till last weekend

we just put a schwitzer turbo on it, and it really goes now, this weekend for its first run, it will tow my cruiser on42s, car trailer, parts, and so forth 3 hours, with 2 big mountain passes and a lot of gravel and uphill downhill!!

it will be fine, cause ill be asleep in the back

I should mention that he wanted to ride with me on the trails whether or not he tows me, so it's not like he's getting nothing out of it.

Yeah, it's FAR from the best tow rig, but it's either that or I don't go at all.

He should do it. My buddy has pulled a mini and the next year a runner from the Twin Cities to Rapid City SD (600 miles..I think)with his 80. First year was w/o the supercharger. I would think it sucks, but there isn't really a reason not to do it.:D He also towed a bigass U-haul full his crap from MN to Cali when he moved out. He couldn't keep up with PSD's in the Rockies, but it got the job done.

I had the discussion with lots of the FJ80 owners, but the later motor you're OK. Ya, lots of weight (is he wired for the trailer brakes) behind you... just keep the speed down, and don't dooze off and you'll be fine.

Oh, I ended up buying a 2500HD Crew Cab for the towing duties (6.0 gas). Little did I know that I would suddenly go from a family of three to six! Ya, we need a cruiser as we need at least six seat belts!

When are you going to Globe?, that's like our home trail around here! Are you going with the Trailblazers? If you havent been in awhile "the rock" is gettin pretty tough now, I was DENIED last time, thats where i broke the last lincoln locker at. Hard to believe just a few years ago i went right over it with a shackle lift and 33's, open!

The "addition" I speak of is my 3rd locker.. model 8274-50. :D

That's the reason I wanted to be trailered there.. it was to be Blue's last ride before she gets torn down for the winter, so I don't care what I break.

I'm still trying to find a way, but I'm BROKE, so I can't rent a truck... I have the trailer lined up already...

I did it for a couple of years....long treks too....New Orleans to Tellico twice and to Clayton 4 times.....

Kate, 1500# trailer.....

Kate had airbag coils and I had one brake on the axles.

I towed in "D" and ran at 3000 RPM everywhere.

Worked fine. Tows like a 1/2 ton truck.

I tow 6000lbs regularly with my '93 80 series. But I use airbags in the rear coils for leveling/control and the 93/94 had a heavier transmission than 95 and later. Your 95 already has all the engine and tranny coolers for towing - just needs the actual hitch. Prolly not going to help since the Boss will decide, but info for the future...
