: Ftoy #77 build
SMITTY'S FTOY 04-30-2011, 05:00 PM Well, I have been talking about doing this build thread for over a year now and I finally have enough time to start. I picked up the ftoy through a friend of "TOOLBOXGUY" just after KING OF THE HAMMERS 2010. It was basically the chassis partially welded to a frame and a box of parts. It has come along way and is almost complete. So, with that in mind I am going to try and start from the begining and work my way down the line.
ToolBox Guy 05-02-2011, 04:02 PM I know you've got like 4 days off every week, no time to post pics. or what?!?
Mustard Dog 05-02-2011, 04:04 PM Should I go hop the fence to desertoys and get a couple pics:confused::flipoff2:
SMITTY'S FTOY 05-02-2011, 04:48 PM Sorry bout that, still trying to figure out how to resize pics. should be able to post pics tomorrow.
Mustard Dog 05-02-2011, 04:56 PM Sorry bout that, still trying to figure out how to resize pics. should be able to post pics tomorrow.
So what you're saying is that it takes a smart guy like you 4 days to figure out how to re-size pics, what is this fawking world coming to?:p:flipoff2:
SMITTY'S FTOY 05-02-2011, 05:15 PM 1st day of ownership
ToolBox Guy 05-02-2011, 05:31 PM Dam.
I'm glad that rickety POS isn't sitting there anymore. :flipoff2:
SMITTY'S FTOY 05-02-2011, 05:33 PM Well I think I figured it out. This should give you guys an idea of what I started with. Gotta go to work. Will post more photos of build tomorrow.
SMITTY'S FTOY 05-02-2011, 05:36 PM I know huh. Hard to believe it looked like that.
roqtoy 05-02-2011, 06:08 PM come on mark, i know your farther along than that. lets see some current pics.
now i am gonna have to start building mine.
Tool Pimp 05-02-2011, 07:14 PM now i am gonna have to start building mine.
:lmao::lmao: when did hell freeze  :flipoff2:
mtrent3450 05-03-2011, 06:33 AM :lmao::lmao: when did hell freeze :confused: :flipoff2:
Tony by your comment I am guessing Roqtoy is Joe.
Smitty post some build pics. Everybody knows what a barely started Ftoy looks like, right Joe!
SMITTY'S FTOY 05-03-2011, 04:04 PM The first thing we did was take out the old rear section and updated it with TOOLBOXGUY'S rear section.
desertoy 05-04-2011, 01:41 PM Man, you got alot of pictures to put up. GET TO IT!
roqtoy 05-04-2011, 06:20 PM Tony by your comment I am guessing Roqtoy is Joe.
Smitty post some build pics. Everybody knows what a barely started Ftoy looks like, right Joe!
:flipoff2::flipoff2:
ToolBox Guy 05-05-2011, 09:24 AM Geez, this is worse than watching paint dry.
This build thread may actually go on longer than the build itself.
SMITTY'S FTOY 05-05-2011, 10:44 AM Sorry for the wait, been a little busy. I went ahead and bought seats early on so that I could use them for mock up. As you can see they are standard PRP highbacks for the front and a 36" bench in the back with headrests. Oh yeah, mtrent3450 has figured out how to add mercedes benz seat heaters in all seats. Found the seat heaters and switches at Pick A Part for around a 100 bucks for all four seats. Also in the photos you will see the motor is moved back 8 inches. The inboard spring hangers, transfer case mount/skid, and shackles all TOOLBOXGUY, which by the way is awesome stuff. If interested in any of his parts pm him he will hook you up.
SMITTY'S FTOY 05-05-2011, 04:21 PM heres a few more pics. I turned the dash bar around and put in the Poly Performance adjustable steering. the front and rear axles are rebuilt with YUKON lockers, and YUKON 5:29 gears which I bought from Marlin Crawler. The diff armor is also Marlin Crawler. If you noticed the trusses on the rear axle, those were built by TOOLBOXGUY to fit the axle using the MARLIN diff. armor. All the shock tabs and mounts also TOOLBOXGUY. Oh ya almost forgot the rear disc brake conversion which I found the parts on Pirate and the brackets are again TOOLBOXGUY. Stock shafts in the rear and longfields up front.
MORE PICS COMING SOON.
SMITTY'S FTOY 05-05-2011, 04:36 PM A pillars and the rear section of the roof were added for more protection. Csheck out the trans./skid mount. It uses two trans mounts for better support and allows for easy removal of trans and cases out the bottom. <TOOLBOXGUY>
OlMan 05-05-2011, 05:20 PM Very nice build thread so far, but your garage is too clean.
SMITTY'S FTOY 05-05-2011, 05:26 PM GM 1 wire alt. with TOOLBOXGUYS bracket works great. The second photo shows the pickup sensor for the SDS fuel mangement system. If using this setup I highly reccomend purchasing the pulley with the magnets already installed. this saves alot of time and headache. I think it runs a couple hundred bucks. I did it myself using the stock pulley had to callfor help a couple times but i got it. The guys at LCE were more than helpful.
Y5mgisi 05-05-2011, 05:30 PM I have always loved the f-toys. This one is looking great!
SMITTY'S FTOY 05-05-2011, 08:50 PM Thanks for the positive feedback. Although I cannot take all the credit. I have been very lucky to have good friends that have helped out tremendously and have a great deal of expierence building ftoys. Thank you TOOLBOXGUY, DESERTTOY, and MTRENT3450, thank you for all your help.
SMITTY'S FTOY 05-05-2011, 08:56 PM Oh, and about the garage being too clean, thats TOOLBOXGUYS garage mine is way dirty.:D
SMITTY'S FTOY 05-05-2011, 09:14 PM At this point it was time to get some wheels and tires so I could get it rolling, put it on a trailer and take it to my house. I picked up a set of Raceline wheels and put a set of 39" pitbull mad dogs on them. Now its rollin! Once it was back at my house I started buildime and thing a dash. Holy *%@#, now I know why most Ftoys I see dont have a full dash in them. Well I took my time and this is what I started.
SMITTY'S FTOY 05-05-2011, 09:19 PM More pics. Also in the pics you can see the last bit of tubing was completed for the hood and bracing up front. wanted to do something a little different we'll see how it turns out.
SMITTY'S FTOY 05-05-2011, 09:29 PM Ok I am done for the weekend. Heading out to Slash X this weekend for the 4X4 HIM event. Be back Sunday. I will try to get some more photos out begining of the week.
ToolBox Guy 05-06-2011, 07:15 AM I haven't seen the FToy in about a month, but when it was at John James' getting the aluminum, and final details finished, it looked really good.
This will for sure be in the top 5 nicest FToys rollin around.
jaydee1975 05-06-2011, 08:54 AM man that dash is one of the best i've seen in a ftoy! good job! cannot wait to see it complete!!:D
desertoy 05-06-2011, 12:48 PM I wonder if I should post up the pictures I have of my balls resting on his nice dash :D:D
Naaaa, I probably shouldn't :flipoff2:.
MT4Runner 05-06-2011, 12:55 PM man that dash is one of the best i've seen in a ftoy! good job!
Oh yeah!!! If the rest of the buggy gets that much detail, it will easily be in the top 5...or top 3 nicest!!
SMITTY'S FTOY 05-08-2011, 10:41 PM Got back today from the 4X4HIM event out at Slash X. Had a great time, good food , and even won a couple raffle prizes. Thanks rick.
While the dash was being powdercoated, John James Started working on some of the alum. work which turned out awesome.
Longfield 05-09-2011, 07:45 AM Very nice nister.:smokin:
Mustard Dog 05-09-2011, 12:02 PM I haven't seen the FToy in about a month, but when it was at John James' getting the aluminum, and final details finished, it looked really good.

ToolBox Guy 05-09-2011, 02:32 PM He really fucked it up since you saw it last, think Hobies steering column:shaking::barf:
Kidding:D
There is nothing in the world that is bad as that steering column was....Where are those pics anyways? He randomly posts the one of me in a womens tank top, we need pics of the column.
SMITTY'S FTOY 05-09-2011, 06:14 PM The fuel system is now finished. As you can see from the photos I am running a 12 gal. JAZ fuel cell. I installed two wallboro pickups on opposite ends of the tank in hopes that if I am running low on fuel I will not have issues at extreme angles. I also have a small fuel pump plumbed to a accumulator tank and a wallboro fuel pump providing fuel to the motor.
SMITTY'S FTOY 05-09-2011, 06:21 PM Here is a few more pics of the floorboards and tunnel.

ToolBox Guy 06-03-2011, 07:21 AM I went over to Johns on Monday while every one was working and added a surprise to the tube behind his head.:laughing:

sweetmeat 06-21-2011, 05:11 PM Do eet!! It will be a sweet pit rig, too! :smokin:
No way, we just built 2 new chase trucks for that shit lol.... My rig is MY rig. Hoping to get a spot in the race shop and start building 1 very soon. I'm definately ready
SMITTY'S FTOY 07-24-2011, 10:29 PM I know, its been awhile. Been a few changes in the build. I made a trip to vegas a couple weeks ago and picked up some new res. Shocks and bumpstops from foa. I think this will make a big difference from the ol bilstein shocks i was originally going with. I will keep u posted.
SMITTY'S FTOY 07-24-2011, 10:46 PM Car now has fluids and motor fired up. :d. Rear driveline is now installed. Thanks to bruce at hi desert driveline. Front will be in soon
SMITTY'S FTOY 07-24-2011, 11:33 PM Sorry having issues with uploading pics. Will try again in the morning.
Stealthrunner 07-25-2011, 01:01 AM :smokin:Nice F-Toy!!!! Good Job!:smokin:
SMITTY'S FTOY 07-25-2011, 02:14 PM Here are a few pics of the exhaust.
SMITTY'S FTOY 07-25-2011, 02:19 PM Afew pics of mock up and new drivelines. If u need drivelines defintely call up bruce at hi desert driveline. Thanks again bruce
SMITTY'S FTOY 07-25-2011, 02:27 PM Thanks to john james the roof is done. The rear section is mock up . I dont have pics of the finished roof yet. Will post those later.
SMITTY'S FTOY 07-25-2011, 02:32 PM The front axle is complete. Upgraded v6 vented rotors and calipers. Yukon locker, 529"s, and longfields, marlin crawler diff armor.
SMITTY'S FTOY 07-25-2011, 02:41 PM I decided to go with foa 2.5 res. Shocks. 12" in the front and 14" in the rear. I also went with 2.0 bumpstops all the way around. I just happened to be in vegas a couple weeks ago and spoke with the jd at the shop. Jd was able to hook me up with everything i needed to take them home with me that weekend. That was very cool. Thanks jd.
SMITTY'S FTOY 07-25-2011, 02:45 PM So yesterday i pretty much spent all day building a mount for my radio and building it into the lower panel. It was one of those days where it felt like i did not accomplish very much but i think it was worth it.
SMITTY'S FTOY 07-25-2011, 02:51 PM Gotta go. Will post more pics later.
Brian Ellinger 07-25-2011, 03:48 PM Is the front driveshaft, from t-case to carrier bearing, running the u-joint dead on straight? From the pics it doesnt look like it. You'll very likely have a nasty vibration come from it. Ours runs about 10 degrees off, and after a couple trips, received a new shaft with a CV in it.
roqtoy 07-25-2011, 05:37 PM wow smitty, that thing is turning out sweet...im gonna have to get everybody that helped build yours, help build mine lol...i have to many projects and no motivation
offroadman1973 07-25-2011, 08:16 PM looks awesome!!!
SMITTY'S FTOY 07-25-2011, 09:44 PM Originally it was off a little. I did make it straight but as you can see it is angled down in an attempt to avoid binding in the front shaft. I was hoping that would help the pinion angle.
Vlooi 07-26-2011, 10:24 AM Smitty. It looks really nice, keep up the good work and enjoy it.
SMITTY'S FTOY 07-26-2011, 09:33 PM Thank you. Iwish i could take all the credit but without the help of toolboxguy, desert toy, and mark trentham it would probably look a little different. Cant wait to wheel it!
Stealthrunner 07-26-2011, 09:38 PM :grinpimp: Yep you have some good peeps helping you!!!!!met a few of them here and there...Mr. Hendrix is a good guy to!!!:smokin:
offroad_joe 07-27-2011, 07:30 AM Thank you. Iwish i could take all the credit but without the help of toolboxguy, desert toy, and mark trentham it would probably look a little different. Cant wait to wheel it!
I'll be up this weekend putting in my lift. I can throw an alternator on mine and we can go do a test run.:D
SMITTY'S FTOY 07-27-2011, 09:32 PM Hey joe long time no see. Oh ya happy birthday. See ya this weekend.
MT4Runner 08-03-2011, 12:52 PM So yesterday i pretty much spent all day building a mount for my radio and building it into the lower panel. It was one of those days where it felt like i did not accomplish very much but i think it was worth it.
You will like that Yaesu. It's a very solid radio. FT-2800 or -2900?
mtrent3450 08-03-2011, 01:03 PM You will like that Yaesu. It's a very solid radio. FT-2800 or -2900?
It is a 2800 we got 3 of them 2 years ago on your recommedation before KOH. Smitty hasnt used his much before he mounted it here, but I have used the crap out of mine. I got a 2900 that I mounted in my trailer as a base camp radio. I just need to figure out a good ant. for the trailer.
desertoy 08-03-2011, 02:08 PM I swear Smitty takes a shit load of pictures as we are working on it.
WTF Smitty? You suck at having a buildup thread.
Here's a picture of it in the background :flipoff2:.
Mustard Dog 08-04-2011, 07:09 AM This is almost as bad as the build thread Dustin did for the Rock-it, got all hyped up for it and it fizzled:D:D:flipoff2:
MT4Runner 08-04-2011, 07:55 AM It is a 2800 we got 3 of them 2 years ago on your recommedation before KOH. Smitty hasnt used his much before he mounted it here, but I have used the crap out of mine. I got a 2900 that I mounted in my trailer as a base camp radio. I just need to figure out a good ant. for the trailer.
I remember some of the Benders were having problems with the DTMF (keypad) mics on the similar Icom units. I've had zero problems with the Yaesus. I bought the programming software/cable for the -2800, but unfortunately, the -2900 isn't compatible! :mad3:
Do you have a cloning cable? Need one? It's super handy to program one, and then plug in 2 or 3 others and have the exact same programming.
I need to buy another 5/8 wave magnet mount for my toterhome. I currently use a small 1/4 wave magmount right on the roof (on a steel plate I screwed on for this purpose). When I'm in camp, I plan to elevate a 20-30' pole and get the antenna that much higher. I need to add "ground plane" elements to the top of the pole to make a ground plane for the 5/8 wave.
VHF is line of sight, and elevation=distance. :smokin:
desertoy 08-04-2011, 08:48 AM DTMF (keypad) Yaesus. -2800, -2900

5/8 wave magnet 1/4 wave magmount "ground plane" elements ground plane for the 5/8 wave.
VHF and elevation=distance. :smokin:
This is what I hear in my head when I read your "crazy radio guy" post :flipoff2:.
MT4Runner 08-12-2011, 08:44 AM Where is the :nerd: smiley?
Tool Pimp 08-22-2011, 07:10 PM SLACKER!!!! :flipoff2:
SMITTY'S FTOY 09-06-2011, 04:29 PM Ok, i know its been awhile. We have made alot of progress with a few bumps in the road but i think its coming together. The floor is complete. Took the rear panels off and had them powder coated. The dash is complete with new engraved panels thanks to mark trentham (mtrent3450)
SMITTY'S FTOY 09-06-2011, 04:39 PM Pics
SMITTY'S FTOY 09-06-2011, 04:48 PM More pics
SMITTY'S FTOY 09-06-2011, 04:55 PM Here are some pics of the bumpstop install and shocks. Had a few issues with the bumpstops but foa made it right and the second set fit perfect.

SMITTY'S FTOY 09-06-2011, 05:20 PM Yesterday i welded on the tabs for the side panels and fitted the panels.
SMITTY'S FTOY 09-06-2011, 05:24 PM Well thats all for now. Gotta take the boys to football practice. See ya all later.
mtrent3450 09-06-2011, 06:44 PM Nice to see panels on it. The orange on the panels look better than I thought. You are almost there, we will be wheelin in a month!
MT4Runner 09-06-2011, 08:00 PM What is the rolled floor system behind the back seat--and the wiring there?
SMITTY'S FTOY 09-06-2011, 09:20 PM The rolled floor is where the backseat mounts. It just allows the back seat to sit a little lower thats all. The wiring is a distribution block for the fuel pumps, rear seat heaters, lights ect....
ToolBox Guy 09-06-2011, 09:22 PM coming together really nice.
mtrent3450 09-26-2011, 08:41 PM Couple weeks until the first run!!
marvin82 09-27-2011, 06:47 AM beautiful. that is all...
offroad_joe 10-08-2011, 09:50 PM A birdy told me it went out for it's test run today. Well how did it do?
By the way thanks for the invite asshole.:flipoff2:
Stealthrunner 10-08-2011, 11:06 PM :( Well if you took it out on a test run where's the pictures????:shaking:
Mustard Dog 10-09-2011, 08:02 AM :( Well if you took it out on a test run where's the pictures????:shaking:
They're still out test running, patients grasshopper:p
SMITTY'S FTOY 10-12-2011, 10:22 PM It is true, the test run was out to Couger buttes and it went really well. The car did great. I am really happy with the way the car performed. I will post some photos and video tomorrow. Oh ya sorry Joe, I didnt really invite anyone because honestly I wasn't sure I was going to make it out there. Next time I will be a little more orginized.
mtrent3450 10-13-2011, 06:13 AM It is true, the test run was out to Couger buttes and it went really well.

freds40 10-14-2011, 03:52 PM Come awn Mark. Post them up. :grinpimp:
SMITTY'S FTOY 10-16-2011, 03:51 PM Here are some of photos of the last minute stuff before the first test run.
SMITTY'S FTOY 10-16-2011, 03:55 PM Check out the "x" drilled out in the side of the housing. The external speaker for the radio is mounted behind it. Can hear it loud and clear.
SMITTY'S FTOY 10-16-2011, 04:00 PM Lined the roof and side panels with speakerbox material. Worked great.
SMITTY'S FTOY 10-16-2011, 04:02 PM A couple pics by my house where we tested it out.
SMITTY'S FTOY 10-16-2011, 04:06 PM Sorry i thought i had more pics but my son actually took more video. I am going to attempt to put it on you tube with a link.
chvyhs 10-16-2011, 05:53 PM Your rig came out looking real good. Congrats.
offroadman1973 10-16-2011, 06:54 PM cool rig but why did you carpet the inside of the roof? just asking if there was a reason because i kinda like it!!:D
mtrent3450 10-16-2011, 08:09 PM cool rig but why did you carpet the inside of the roof? just asking if there was a reason because i kinda like it!!:D
It keeps it quiet by absorbing vibrations. I believe it is on the side panels too.
Smitty I didn't take any pictures last weekend. I only have video of my rig on that failed climb.
Stealthrunner 10-16-2011, 10:41 PM :smokin: Fawker turned out Bad ass Smitty!!!!! Got a Question for ya ...how many inches on your rig is it from the A pillar to the Wing window bars at the bottom?? The dash turned out kick ass....Might have to steal your idea for my X-Toy!!!!:D
offroadman1973 10-17-2011, 08:39 AM It keeps it quiet by absorbing vibrations. I believe it is on the side panels too.
Smitty I didn't take any pictures last weekend. I only have video of my rig on that failed climb.
ok gotchya!! not a bad idea!
SMITTY'S FTOY 10-17-2011, 01:59 PM it is fifteen and half inches from A pillar and wing window. that gives me 28 1/4 inches of room to get in. which is plenty for me. I am six feet tall and 215 pounds and i can get in with no problems. Thanks for the comments.
SMITTY'S FTOY 10-17-2011, 02:03 PM oh ya, the lining on the roof and side panels is a must for vibration and rattles. unfortunately that is not the only thing that rattles as i found out this weekend. you will find things rattle at different RPMS as well.
dwishart505 10-17-2011, 02:30 PM looks great. everything.....great. about to start my own f-toy build and will definately being using this for reference.

no because you will just flop it on subonnet :flipoff2:
btw, i never told you but i flopped in your spot this past KOH. as soon as i did it, i said dang! this is where brett always screws up. but 20 seconds later i drove out of the flop much to mark's applause. there were also 3 spectators. i think they were check pt. guys. anyways, they all cheered! :D
SMITTY'S FTOY 11-01-2011, 03:45 PM Thanks Mark for posting the videos. Man, we had alot of fun this weekend. Thanks to John James who came out for the night and ended up running me around town trying to find a radiator. We found one and my overheating issue is resolved. Thanks for your help. Cant wait for the next trip.
