I know they were claiming that angle at the beginning of this deal, but they have backed off off from that big time now.

It's pretty hard to justify taking public land that best resembles the area you're gonna be fighting in when the Commander in Chief says you wont be fighting there within a few months. Time to come up with a new reason to steal our land:shaking:

Drones. Special Ops. Navy Seals.

That's how many of our battles will be fought.

I pray we never have to call on a Marine force of 20,000 ...

I agree.

The question about whether or not there is still a need for the Combat Center's expansion really has nothing to do with the terrain specifically or it's resemblance of current operations. The “Purpose and Need” for expansion has to do more with operating that size of force(15,000+Marines & Sailors), the combination of the Air, Ground, and Logistics elements, communications equipment, and combined arms(guns, cannons, rockets, tanks ect.). Those are the true purposes for the proposal of the land expansion. In today’s military we have planes, guns, bombs, vehicles, radios, ect. that all go farther and faster than the things we used to utilize in our profession. I remember doing exercises in the 90’s that would take us a week to cover the current terrain of this base that we do in the 48-72 hour exercises today. My last deployments to Iraq and Afghanistan we have covered the same space in a day or two all due to better technology and the tactics, techniques, and procedures we train to here at 29 Palms.

The death of Bin Laden and the potential fall of the evil networks he orchestrated is something to be celebrated by the American people. But we must never forget there are still people out there hoping and openly willing to inflict harm on us just because we are Americans. I pray every day for our military families that their loved ones will come home safe. We are one of the few countries in the world with an all volunteer military. I, along with the rest of my brothers and sisters at arms, are ready, and will answer the call in any climb and place to keep the wolf off of our soil and protect our way of life and the freedom of our people. I do miss my family while I’m gone but I believe every day that I spend “over there” that is one less day that any of “them” can spend over here. I say all of that to say this; there will always be a need for the military to “train as we fight”. The Marine Corps is the only service that the President can dispatch without an act of Congress (an act of war) and we are and will continue to be ready to answer our nations call. That’s why they call us America’s 911 force. I hope that wasn’t too much, I’ll get off my soap box now…:emb3:

But seriously, if you have any questions please put them out there. For every one that posts a question I am sure there are many more wondering the same thing and that's why I'm here.

We aint pulling out of Afghanistan anytime soon. Terrorist organizations are built into cells, Osama bin Laden is one of hundreds of heads on the same snake.

...ummm... the MAXIMUM size of a MEB is listed. MEBs shrink or swell as appropriate to specific battles. A better number would be the AVERAGE size of an MEB. Planning for three MEBs at maximum capacity for training seems unreasonable.

You are absolutely correct, MEB's do change in size and organization to fit the mission requirements and that the listed size of the MEB is approximately the maximum size. That is what is required by the NEPA laws (maximum impact on the environment) and that is why it is being used. The plan is only to have 1 MEB~15,000 Marines & attachments, on deck, in training for that 1 month period. Then the next iteration will be another MEB for the one month period for a total of the two months training each year.

Unfortunately, that's what the laws require us to use for the template to measure the possible environmental impact.

My point was just what is it do they think they need to prepare for:confused: is it some mythical Battle of Biblical proportions if so what ever happened to separation of Church and State:confused: serously they made it though the Cold War with 2 MEBs you just got to wonder what their thinking:smokin:
