: Welding Diff protection?????? FLEXYSAMMY 11-25-2002, 09:17 AM I am goignt be making and welding on some diff protection on my yota axles. Do you think there is any harm in welding it with thr 3rd members and oil in it? I know not to burn through and if were to do it this way would drain out the ols oil and put new oil in. Need feed back...... mudlite 11-25-2002, 09:40 AM I wouldn't worry Devon. You won't do any damage to the gears, just watch out how you do your welding. If you weld too much to fast you will warp the axle. Don't forget to show us pics when your done. TNToy 11-25-2002, 10:16 AM Actually, I feel more comfortable welding with the oil inthe diff. Better cooling as the oil acts like a heat sink. :D Just put a bead on one side, switch to the other half and let that one cool... and so on. No big deal as long as you don't do it all in one pass with the 220 MIG on full blast. :eek: zuk88 11-25-2002, 12:28 PM You'll be able to hear the oil bubble and pop if you start getting to hot. You will have to change the oil anyway. The oil will burn and crust on the inside the crust is hard enough to mess up the seals and possable reduce gear life.
