: If you wheel an auto and are serious.....
R.DesJardin 05-08-2011, 10:00 AM Automatic transmission shift controllers...............
Not sure if you guys are aware of this but the Aisin-Warner auto found in many Isuzus can be made to manually control the shifting with my shift controllers. This transmission 30-40LE and it's variants is also used in Jeeps, Toyotas, Lexus, Mitsus and Volvos, probably forgot someone.
Manual control of all four gears, shift up or down when you want, or start in the gear of your choice, great for low range 2nd or 3rd gear starts.
chadzu 05-08-2011, 11:55 AM interesting.
On the auto in my '95 trooper it seems that the factory shifter gives much of this control.
Now will your controller force it to up-shift when I want? Mine seems to wait too long at times. If I have it in second and come to a stop will it go into first or do I have to shift it with your shifter to get back to first?
I like that idea, but wish I could ditch the factory shifter in the process.
I am under the impression that my tranny is a 4l30e? Same thing?

Yes, you can make the trans shift up or down when you want using our shift controllers.
Yes you have to shift to what gear you want to start in, around town you'll probably only use 1st and 2nd.
Just put the factory shifter in the OD position and use the shift controller for 1st-4th manual shifting. Some guys use a switch to use the TCM around town and on the road and the switch to the shift controller for the trails.
Same trans many names. AW4 says 30-43le, A340 says 30-40le on ID plate, look at the ID plate on the trans to see the actual model, the Jeeps and Toyotas both say different but are the same trans.
trainwreck 05-09-2011, 11:10 AM 4l30e is a GM piece, i dont think its related to the A340 / 30-40 at all
The FWD version is in cavaliers and small cars, if that tells you anything about strength :(
Rory if you figure out a bolt-in bellhousing for 60* GM to A340F (besides the 03-up axiom & rodeo, which is back ordered thru isuzu and hard to find used) i will be your 1st customer :grinpimp:
R.DesJardin 05-09-2011, 12:58 PM I am very sure the AW autos are in some Isuzus just under a different name, using a GM 60* bolt pattern yes, but Aisin Warner trans none the less. There is a write up about a guy bolt a 3800SC onto his AW trans you have probably seen.
More info
"I'm saying that the 2004 Rodeo *does* use the AW 30-80 family tranny, and that it is a better tranny IMO. They *did* use them in the past in the 2.6 automatic Trooper in the '88 - '91 time frame. That was the A340H. They went to the 4L30-E in the 90's and around 2002 or 2003 started switching back to the A340 family of trans again. For 2004, *all* 3.2/3.5 automatic Rodeo and Axiom's I've seen (about 15 total at different dealers) are the AW tranny."
"Got a dipstick for the tranny?
4L30-E:
No dipstick
2 separate oil pans, one in front of the other.
A340 family:
Has a dipstick on the passenger side.
Long, rectangular tranny pan with sort of a shallow 'V' shaped bottom.
On the passenger side, at the rear of the tranny, just above the corner of the tranny pan is a rectangular tag rivited on with Aisin Warner written on it."

The 4L30E isn't a bad trans, just a bit undersized for applications as heavy as an Isuzu SUV. They generally work pretty well in the BMW 3 series and older Caddy Cateras.
I think a better choice might be a 700R4 with did come in a 60° bolt pattern. Just have pesky things like the starter being on the wrong side.
chadzu 05-13-2011, 10:33 AM The 4l30e had a dip stick until '97.
I think the isuzu version was rated to 250 lbft input torque which was plenty for the sohc 3.2 motors. The 3.5 probably required an upgrade, but that being said it seems many more people have problems with the later model trans.....

nope - my 96 passport doesnt, early 95 rodeo i worked on a few months ago didnt
i will paypal you 5 bucks for proof of ANY 4l30e with a dipstick :flipoff2:

I really prefer the a340f, "feels" better and i think its better designed
guy on here (andre?) and goes by starchild on 4x4wire put a 700r4 in a rodeo/passport and had some PITA clearance issues
also every single thing on a catera can suck my left toes

R.DesJardin 05-13-2011, 07:59 PM I was under the impression that the dip stick is not in the oil pan on the 4l30E not whether or not it had one?
chadzu 05-14-2011, 05:16 AM Sorry, this thread kind of went off track. Your product is cool, even if I can't use it in my trooper.
Where would the dipstick go if not in the pan? It seems as though I remember seeing the dipstick sticking down into the pan during regular oil/filter changes.

I wasn't clear, of course it goes into the pan just not thru the side of the trans pan itself, I was thinking through the aluminum casting down into the pan. I guess it would be better explained in does the dipstick come off with the oil pan?:D
chadzu 05-14-2011, 12:41 PM AH, I see! Yes, the dipstick does indeed terminate on the trans housing and not the pan itself.
Do you make any electronic trickery for the GM based trannies?

No one ever asked, if it's the same solenoid control as the 4l60e then yes.:D

On the way! Never imagined there might be a difference - makes me wonder whether the internals on the trooper version might be any stronger.
Back on topic, those are some pretty nifty setups r.desjardin, should be in the market for one pretty soon here :D
chadzu 05-15-2011, 05:42 AM This is the dipstick on a 95.5 rodeo. So the american made isuzus had them too, at least at some point. I know isuzu made seemingly wierd changes when ever they wanted. When I was installing several sets of terra low gears it seemed like every t-case was slightly different, it becomes quite annoying.
Now that this subject has been beat totally to death we can get back to out sick love of isuzu...
